Hello all.

Just bought myself some standard 17" sti alloys 5x114.3. My question is what tyres shall I got for? I was thinking of using vredestein ultrac sessanta's but am open to to suggestion on what other people know are good tyres, if you got an idea on what the tyres cost also would be helpful.

They will need to be good for the track (dry+wet conditions) and I'll also use them on the road after our track day at llandow as its not going to be a regular thing for me I imagine. Tyre size should be 235/40/17 but please correct me if i'm wrong.

I had the vreds at one point and they were very good road tyres, but they wore out very quickly on the inside tread. could have been down to the tracking/geometry but they didn't last that long on the front as far as i can remember. Depends what you want from a tyre. I always look at the compound rating to see how sticky they will be and how quickly they willl heat up.

Nankang's have got it right with the NS-2R tyres if you want some decent sticky rubber for a fair price :)

Just check out some of the reviews, they speak volumes, decent wet ratings as well.

Top man looks like they have had very good reviews!! Ill see if the local garage to me can get them in as I want to get the old tyres off the alloys i just purchased because I'm thinking of getting them sprayed 1st.

Cheers mate, would 225/45/17 be correct or would 235/45 be fine also?

I have a set of STi 17's with 225/45/17 Bridgestone RE070''s fitted.

Can't go wrong with the RE070's. Good soft compound 140 rating iirc. Custom made for the newage 17's, that's if you like the feel of very very stiff side walls. Look good too imo.

A little piece of my ex car stays local. :D

Got federal rsr's on my blob and they are awesome in the dry or wet, the only thing I'm finding with them is they wear quicker on the inner edge of the tyre even after 4 wheel alignment and Geo set up but apart from that I love them.

They are the 595 rsr's aren't they? had a few different tyre quotes today from the loacal garage to me will have to see what they can do on these also now, so far the vredestein ultrac sessanta's have come in at the best price 65+vat so 78 I think, fitted.

Yes Greg they are the 595's that I have and I can't fault them apart from the problem I mentioned.

I've had a few different lots Greg, Toyo Proxes T1r's, they were great pushing hard in dry conditions, but more than a bit twitchy in the damp/wet, and found they wore down pretty quickly.
Then had Bridgestone Potenzas, didn't gel with them, and I think they lasted even less time than the Toyos.
I'm now on Falken Fk452's on the front Fk453's on the rear (slightly diff tread pattern and "improved " version), I find them great in all weather conditions and seem to hold well, and seem to last better than the others.
I'm interested to find out how Jay gets on with his Nannakangs, i know he'll give them a good testing and if they tick all the boxes I may well try a set next time.

cheers rob, I have tried the falkens in the past and I just couldn't get along with them. I'm also interested in how the nannkangs do but what puts me off is they are not that great in the wet where I will most probably end up using what ever tyre I put on in the wet.

The Nokian Zlines are worth a look, I'm currently running them on my classic on 16s, and finding them excellent, especially in the wet, and on Welsh minor roads coated in, er, wet farming byproducts. They're rated A for wet grip on the label. Rated higher than Sessantas on Tyrereviews.com, and better than Michelin PS2s in my opinion. Only done 5k miles on them, so don't know about wear rate, but I suspect it won't be great. Currently £63 a corner delivered on Oponeo.com. Gotta love the exchange rate at the moment.

Done some research and for the price ns2r's are unbeatable, alot better than 595rsr's.

be nice to know how you are getting on with them & whether you went for the sticky (180) or super sticky (120)...:thumb:

Went for the 180 street compound, if they live up to the reviews than I'll be more than happy with them but I will let you know my thoughts on them when I finally get the car back on the road.

For £280 a set for my mini, i will geting a set of 120's in the near future.

Just heads up to say the prices on Tyreleader have been fluctuating on these tyres this week. I just bought two tyres for £118.

Well a bit of an update went and bought another set of 5x114.3 17x8 sti alloys already done in gloss black.

As for tyres I got myself a set of Nankang NS2R's 120 compound all bought from specC_chris. Therefore my original set of 17x8 will be up for sale in the near future.

So pretty much all set for this track day now last few little checks need doing/going over such as check my brake pads and get the tyres and wheels on the car.

All worked out fine. I think you'll be happy with the NS2R's judging by the reviews and good in the wet I read too. :thumb:

I got the NS2R's in soft compound and I love them. Too soft for road use but my god do they grip.
Great in the wet too. Couldn't get the arse end out anymore in the wet than I could in the dry.
Great value for money.
