I have now fitted an FIA approved drivers seat and need to fit a harness. To avoid drilling holes in the body work I want know whether it is safe to clip the harness shoulder straps to the ISOFIX mounting pointsat the back of the rear seats. Couple of people have said yes and a couple have said no. Anyone know the strength of the ISOFIX system?

What is the ISOFIX system?

It is a mounting point attached to the chassis, primarily for the attachment of child seats. The child seat attaches (sp?) directly to it. It looks like a bar about 5cm long, extended U shape.

can you not use the rear setbelt mounting bolts??

I could, however, it would mean putting the eye bolts in (its a clip in harness for ease of removal) I then have trouble putting the rear seat back. I can do it, but if this way is easier, I'd like to go with it.

Dave, I believe that your STI will have these ISOFIX mounts.

Ah ha, after a bit of digging, I have found that ISOFIX is the name for ISO 13216-1.

It is tested with 15 kilo Newton force to each of the test fixtures loading the lower anchorages and the user-ready tether anchorage of a seating position. The onset rate would be 135 000 N/second attained within 30 seconds and held for a period of 10 seconds. I'm no good with these conversion, is it strong enough to mount a harness?

Glib answer, if the loads the ISOFIX mounts are designed for are the same as OEM seat belt mounts, then yes it would be OK, but I doubt it.

In any case, three point harnesses (single strap to the rear) do not work very well in an Impreza as the belt mounts are offset, four point work better.

My STi7 has four point 3" Sabelt harnesses on eye bolts in conjunction with the OEM belts. I leave the rear straps clipped to the eye bolts and just chuck them on the back seat when using the OEM belts - harnesses are a pain on the road.
