is this caliper piston ok?
 

Hey,

Had to remove the caliper as the piston was stuck good and proper. Only way i got it free was in a vice to push it back a touch to loosen it, and then put a long nut through the hole where the hose connects and hammered the piston out from behind.

Anyway, took the piston out, cleaned it up, wiped out the caliper, tried to put it back in and it was didnt want to go back in easily.

Just wondering if theres too much corrosion on the piston?

How do i know if i need new piston seals? Should a buy a new piston kit thing?

the oem pistons are chrome plated and as with yours the chrome becomes pitted and reveals the steel underneath which then rusts and seizes. im surprised ian didnt recommend his steel replacement pistons and seal kit which is what you will need. basically it would be silly not to do them while you have them apart.

Also see the rust part above the rubber seal on the caliper, this will need cleaning up before re-fitting the new piston ;)

I can also see at least 3 cuts/splits in the seal which means it needs replacing

When i spoke to ian, the piston was still stuck and the bit i could see was ok so i did tell him it wasnt corroded. He did say they could refurb it for me but i said i was really needing my car useable by tomorrow and hoped the piston would be ok when it was out and cleaned up.
Ill speak to him tomorrow though.

Oh yeah, i did poke it with a screwdriver so i know theres deffo one little split.

Organize alternative transport for tomorrow and get the brakes sorted. New pistons and seals both sides. Then at least you know it's done, or for speed, just buy an exchange pair of calipere from Iain. :thumb:
