Because you said this: ^^^^

No need to start calling anyone. It makes you look childish. If you're going, go, don't whine.

I would like to bet I'm a LITTLE more experienced than you in car electrics.:D

Been doing my own since 1971. How about you?

Jbrake87 12 March 2015 10:16 PM

Honours degree in mechanical and electrical engineering. Should be capable of soldering a loom!!!

So you have been budging cars since 1971!! Impressive.

piehole1983 13 March 2015 12:40 AM

This is getting silly.

LOL...a degree......I'm impressed....NOT.

What's your practical experience? With car looms?

As for me, altering looms to fit an alternator instead of a dynamo, fitting and integrating auxiliary wiring looms for rally lighting, extra instrumentation and an ammeter, (in the days when extra instruments came with virtually zero instructions), extra wiring for ICE, (when most cheap cars didn't even HAVE a radio, let alone speakers), and replacing half a loom on a burnt out part when a "bodged" wiring job on a mate's car went horribly wrong.

And you?

**jay** 13 March 2015 02:50 PM

Welcome to scoobynet mate where no matter what you say or try and do you will get shot down in flames lol

Jbrake87 13 March 2015 03:10 PM

Still doesn't think I am capable of joint two identical looms together :')
What you have described there is pretty basic operations to be fair. You haven't re invented the wheel I'm afraid. But I respect you have experience so well done for that.

It's ok jay, I just take it all with a pinch of salt!!

To be fair, I never said that...I said it's easy to get dry-soldered joints, (and no degree will stop you getting those, it's experience that counts there), and I also said I think what you are doing is a waste of time., and asking for trouble.

BUT: I have stated now twice, and I repeat it for the third time:

IT'S YOUR CAR, DO AS YOU WILL.

Jbrake87 13 March 2015 10:59 PM

A degree AND experience. So I'm fine!!

Not a waste of time if it's goingvto help create the look I'm going for!!

END OF CONVERSATION!!

May I wade in here?

I wouldn't recommend modifying an old Impreza engine loom. I see a fair few through the workshop and they usually have brittle insulation, especially at the connectors, and even worse when the engine has been in/out and the connectors ineptly detached.

Don't strip the loom to lose "unnecessary wires" as it is a lot of work for little benefit.

Your best bet is to remake it completely, omitting what you dont need (purge solenoid, for example) and adding in what you would like to improve (newage coilpack conversion, for example).

Use new wire, new terminals and seals, but you can usually reuse the connector shells.

No solder joints.

We do this regularly to breath new life in to 15-20 year old engine looms.

It's not expensive (compared to an engine rebuild).

alcazar 14 March 2015 01:39 PM

And..........I thank you............:D

Jbrake87 14 March 2015 01:43 PM

Wow, 2 people. Agree. Obviously the thousands of people who do loom chops are all wrong!!

What he said. You asked for opinions; you got some.

ossett2k2 14 March 2015 03:23 PM

Good advice given by very experienced members in this field of expertise.
I don't have a degree but it does make sense that a full custom loom rebuild is the best option. Why create a weak point in the loom by chopping even if it's a well done weak point?

Dude, who are you trying to convince here, because it sounds like you are trying to convince yourself.;):nono:

If you are so certain, just get on and do it.:lol1::lol1::lol1::lol1:

roscom 27 March 2015 12:40 AM

I have done this a few times by remaking the loom from scratch. I'm an electrical retard but if you do it methodically its not too bad. Buy good quality bits though as its not worth skimping on. My basic steps were;

Label all connectors.
Remove engine loom from car and lay it out to reference from.
Lay out new wiring (of correct spec obviously) lengthening, shortening or repositioning runs as needed.
Tape up loom roughly and lay in car to check fit.
Fit new connectors or buy a set of pin pushers and reuse old ones where required.
Tape up loom with a good quality loom tape.
Fit and admire.

Cheers Ross.

Think he has done one and dried his eyes, 2.5 conversion on the cards now apparently

Jbrake87 31 March 2015 10:07 AM

Haha apparently??!! Seems every Scooby group has its nobs!!

alcazar 31 March 2015 10:27 AM

This one has....now........

:D

Jbrake87 31 March 2015 10:29 AM

How am I the nob?!
All I've done is ask for advice and got abuse. And now I'm doing something else to the car, it's only apparently going to happen!!

alcazar 31 March 2015 07:30 PM

1. You were the first to use abuse.
2. You refused all advice, knew best, got stroppy when the advice said the opposite of what you wanted.
3. You threw a hissy fit and said you were leaving the forum.
4. Continued to try and persuade us instead off getting on and doing what you said you would.

How are you NOT a nob?

Pretty sure I didn't exactly throw abuse.
I was spoken to like it as an idiot who knew nothing. Really didn't get stroppy did I... Pretty sure that happens in a playground.
I haven't got on to do what I first wanted to do, due to the fact I have changed my plans. And as you well know it's going to be a totally different project.
Please dont feel the need to reply.

I was just about to ask if you had started work on it yet

Jbrake87 31 March 2015 09:22 PM

Afraid not, I work away 5 days a week and had a lot of other things to do over the weekends.
No it's just planning and buying bits I need for the 2.5.

piehole1983 31 March 2015 09:27 PM

That's a bollock, I'm the same. I don't have time to do anything these days!

Jbrake87 31 March 2015 09:29 PM

It's a bit of a pain, cars been sat for about 5 weeks with nothing done to it. Once I have all the bits I need I'll orobable take a few days off work

Mine has been parked for a few months now waiting to get a new turbo, injectors, struts, drop links, brakes blah blah so I decided to take two weeks off work to get it all done. I got absolutely nothing done, didn't even get to see the car let alone work on it!

Jbrake87 31 March 2015 09:33 PM

Sounds about right... Kept saying you'll donit tomorrow?? Next thing you know your at work again lol
