You can just remove the battery then, put your foot on the brake (this will remove any power in the system) then connect the battery again. 5 minute job tops.

Does anyone know if it is possible to reset the ECU on a MY96 yourself (ie disconnecting the battery for a few hours) or is this a Dealer only job using the selact monitor.

thanks

Yep yo can just disconnect the battery for a few hours or do a CU reset by connecting the 2 plugs under the stearing column.
If you have a look though some threads over the past week or so you will find instructions on how to do it.
Its not hard but you need to do it properly

Does this work on a MY01?

I was speaking to Subaru Irl and the techie was saying that Subaru claim there's no need to reset if you switch up to 97 octane but he has tested it and reckons you do.

Can anyone confirm the correct answer?

All the ECU's are learning, so if the car has a slight problem with a sensor or something the ECU will change the MAP to try to stop this problem, this MAP it changes to could be less that ideal and a conservative setting, therefore less performance.

Resetting this will set the map back to the factory setting which is always a good starting place
