Going rate for tyre fitting?
 

I've bought some tyres online and had a quote of £50 to fit,valve&balance for 16" alloys for 4 tyres. If it takes 10mins per wheel that works out at £75 per hour which seems expensive! Or am I just being a tight wad?

That's an average price, I have paid between £10-£15 for tyres changed, but your getting new valves as well so probably a good price?

I've usually paid £10 per wheel.

I've saved about £20 per tyre, so it's worth it.

Sometimes the local place is the same, or £10 or so dearer in all...he gets the job.

Bear in mind that whoever does it has to pay £2 per tyre to get rid of the old ones, about £0.50 per valve and his time.

that's a fair enough price I paid £50 last week

Went to three places in a row last week for new tyres fitted to new rims (no old tyre to bin) new valves and balanced.

Guess which place made some money... saved myself a lot of money by asking around so it's worth checking a few places.

I charge whatever I want depending on the job , 1 its a tad cheeky someone bringing their own tyres in to a tyre shop but its ££ in the pocket imo .

its time and size we work on so 13-16" say £10 a tyre (valve,balance,disposal,time)
17-19" £15 a tyre
19"-24" £20-£25 a tyre

runflats incur another say £5 a tyre as they are normally more time consuming

so id say its a fair price tbh bud :thumb:

im surprised kwikfit even entertained it as they are not allowed to fit brought in tyres for there insurance +they are f"cking wa%kers

I know it's a bit cheeky taking my own tyres in but it's a massive saving on rubber to buy from a tyre outlet these days!
I'll happily pay £50 to get them fitted and will still be a nice profit for the fitter :)

My brother works for a large chain in the south west and they also refuse to fit tyres not supplied by themselves.He said its do with complaints etc.

Depends. Whenever I've bought tyres they've cost £5 a wheel from same place but if you bring your own tyres and fit from another place then anything from £10-15 a wheel

I would happily buy tyres fromt he fitter if they didn't take the piss with prices.

I get that online stores don't have the same overheads but prices are stupid. If it were a case of £15 a tyre more at the fitter I would pay them but it's more like £30+ a tyre more! No chance am I shelling out that much more when there is a massive chunk of profit in there. I am sure they have more buying power then camskill anyway so must either buy at the same or lower prices. Plus camskill are paying to send them to you by courier so I am not sure the whole (we have overheads to pay for) is justified.

Don't the fitting companies have to pay to have all the old tyres taken away and disposed of in a 'green' fashion?

How much does that cost?

I bought a set of tyres online last year and my local Kwik Fit fitted them for about £8 each. They had no issues with fitting tyres not bought there.

Not in my case. I took wheels and new tyres. They didn't have to take any old ones off. If they did I can put them am in the dump for free.

No rush for wheels but I'm sure you want them out of the way now your build is neary complete. Been following your project thread and the car looks and sounds like it's gonna be awesome.

Sounds like your really moving forward with it mate. What tyres have you gone for? There isnt many of us left running 16's on RA's
Great choice on the esl, its a brill option for our earlier cars!

Yes took your advice keeping on the 16's and glad I have,I've gone NS-2R the 180 compound,they don't do a 50 profile so went for 55,hope I don't regret it!.
As for the ESL,I have bought the full package with lead&software plus Motorsports pack,I will be self mapping(really hope I don't regret that lol) I will be doing loads more reading up and just start by logging before I make any adjustments. Im going to wait for the better weather to hit before I start out on the road to DIY mapping and take things slowly.
I'm looking forward to seeing your wheel reveal,be interesting to see what you have gone for. When do you expect to get the first ride in your new motor?

so your on a 205/55/16? 205/55 would be about right on a 15 but will probably be quite a big tyre on a 16.. the closest you'd get to a 205/50 in terms of keeping the right circumference is probably a 225/45 16, but that's a wide tyre, I've ran a 215/45 16 which isn't too far off and drove well.

I was a bit worried about how the car would drive with the extra profile but the calculations don't seem massively different. 64.4mm circumference or 3.35% difference,which means the speedo will read 70mph at 72.35mph. I'm not fussed about the speedo as i use a gps one,I'm just hoping the car drives and feels ok with the extra profile? I did a little research and a few commented on how they preferred the 55/16 over the 50/16. I guess I will find out when I fit them this week.

I wouldn't say they are taking the piss ,the average profit margin on a tyre is only 15 odd quid for a 18" tyre less for smaller ones. that's time ,valve , balance weights etc etc

the way camskill and the sorts work is they buy at the same price if not cheaper than the highstreet guys but they only make on average 1-2 quid a tyre , they make their money up on a rebate from the manufactures , and if you have many manufaturers you will start to get good rebates etc

say im a falken dealer , they say if you sell 100 falkens we will give you back £250 at the end of the month + the £1 a tyre that's £350

then say you have 30 tyre brands all saying the same thing all with different rebate schemes , you have few guys some phones and start selling tyres at dirt cheap prices but sell bulk and get mucho rebates at the months end , you don't have to even carry stock plus the £1 a tyre from sales , couriers offer cheap deals on bulk carrage to that's why delivery id cheap .

so that's how they work , obviously us highstreet guys cant sell tyres and make £1 and cant sell the bulk to get the rebates etc etc that's why we have to charge abit extra and wouldn't call it taking the piss ;)

if you look at a lot of the small tyre shops etc their prices will only be 10-20 more a tyre than camskills its the likes of ATS and kwikfit that have ridiculous prices and they are the ones who buy a lot cheaper than highstreet guys and even online stores.

I agree with you about it being cheeky Mags but last time I was looking for a set of Vredestein Sessantas most of the local places round my way wouldn't give me a price on them.

I paid £10 a corner for fitting on a 17'' wheel. I rang Kwikfit for a laugh and they quoted me £25 a corner.
