M135i or 435d Xdrive
 

I know we are all subaru fans and I have mine on the drive but it's time to choose a company car. Do about 12,000 a year to it's not too bad, mainly B roads, I can have a m135i (326bhp) or a 435d xdrive (313bhp twin turbo diesel). I have to pay my own fuel so I'm thinking the dirty diesel as I have the subaru. The 435d xdrive comes in convertible, coupe and gran coupe. 4 series range also come better standard spec over the M135i.:confused: what would you do?

My M135i replaced a 335d; the diesel was quick but the 1 is much quicker.
If you want a fun, fast, great sounding car that'll do 35mpg, get the M135i.
If you want a comfy, effortless barge (I had a 4 series for a week; they are massive), get the 435d.

Depends how much you want to enjoy your drive to work.

The 435 would be the better mile muncher but imagine the smile on your face on a sunny morning after giving the 135 some beans...

M135i all day long mate! I have an m3 and there's definitely something special about an M car.

135i supposed to be a cracker but 435d much nicer looking.

And must be a class above in build and that Engine must be epic especially with 4wd to manage all that torque.

135 CC tax will be pricey.

I'd take the 435 diesel every time. You've got a toy for speed and noise.

Plus, have the diesel mapped up and they are pretty special.

Paying your own fuel is the stinger here, If it were me since you're obviously a bit of a petrol head I'd go for the M135i and sell the scoob, reason being you'll barely touch your scoob once something else is parked in front of it on your drive and it'll just be another expense, tax, insurance,mot and the odd service all adds up to a fair few quid sat doing nothing.

I'd rather the car I was driving most of the time be fun when I'm in the mood, the M135i is not a hard as nails full on racer which makes it a good choice for the kind of miles your doing, if you were doing 20k plus a year I'd go the comfy diesel route but 12k's worth of fuel is hardly a crippler.

And besides if you don't get the M135i everytime you get in the barge you'll want to slap yourself.;)

Are the 435d's actually good on fuel though? My neighbour has recently replaced his E46 M3 with a 535d sport and he said it was shockingly bad. He bought it as a quick M3 replacement with good economy, he said it's not much better than the M3

My 335d was 30mpg. Overall, my M135i is better.

The economy of the modern racers have improved quite a lot over the older versions.
Finally they are mapping them properly now :D

Petrol every time. The quick diesels won't be any quicker than today it's only a matter of time before the government hike the running costs and more manufactors get back to making small petrol engine turbo monsters.

Yep, I feel the tide is now turning against diesels.
They've had their day.

I do between 16-20k a year in my main car...... it's a Diesel and returns on average 47mpg. I won't ever be using my A45 for daily mile munching, you can be certain of that.

A Diesel car that does 30mpg is a bit of a joke imo...... unless you need it for towing etc. It defeats the whole idea of owning a Diesel.

Diesel is far from having it's day.

My petrol W reg Rover 214 does 40mpg, quoted @ 42mpg combined, it'll do nigh on 50mpg with a steady right foot @ 70mph, so nothing new really. :)

Is it a top of the range 'racer' hot hatch type car or even turbo?

As that's what I'm talking about, loads of NA cars do good mpg, even the wife's 1.6 mini does 40+

I don't know what's worse.... admitting you drive a 214 or admitting you can get 40-50mpg out of it. ;) You must have to drive it like a proper gimp to get 40mpg out of it. You got a flat cap and thermos in the boot? :D

My 2.5 Outback (NA) is pretty thirsty.
But it's NOT A DIESEL, so I like it.

On a more serious note.....

I did, getting on for 150 miles today in the A45. Whilst I'm not going to incriminate myself by saying exactly what I got up to, but I gave a right beating on quite a few occasions. I'd say a 50/50 split between thrashing the arse off it and normal driving.

I got home and the average mpg since this morning was 30mpg. I couldn't believe it. That is outstanding to me. If I had done that in the Scoob, I reckon I would have averaged 18-20mpg.

On a more serious note, I'd be interested what you average overall off the mileage tripometre from fill to fill and calculating it the old fashioned way as opposed to relying on the car to do it.

135 is great under the hood

But the thing is it is purely a hairdressers car, either your a girl or a femine guy!

That 4 series as pointless as it is, that M4 is stunning

X drive, if bmw are making 4 wheeled drive cars it has to better that the rear wheel drive version :)

Cars I have enjoyed are RWD fords, BMWs from the 70s to noughties and then a Subaru. If I had to chose it would be the back to basics M135i as long as you could drive it like you stole it. :D. I am 50 not dead yet, don't do auto don't do diesel.

The M135i xdrive is available abroad; it's slower and generally not as well liked as the proper version.

It's to stop people from moving to the quattros like I did otherwise I'd of bought another bmw.

"Beating" is subjective...... I'm referring to a sensible "beating" over a mix of town and cross country, rather than driving like a complete **** "beating". This is on public roads after all. ;)

As an indication (and far from exact), the fuel gauge was in exactly (fluke perhaps lol) the same position returning after the journey, as it was as I filled up and started the journey. I know.... it's not science, but just working out the difference in fuel that I topped up with and the miles covered, it works out at 31.3mpg average. So I have little reason to suspect the computer is over egging.... I'll do a proper calculation at some point though. :)

31 ish is still pretty good for "spirited" ;) driving, mine gets about 26/28mpg as an average from week to week but I don't do huge miles, went for a bit of a blast yesterday, quick 30mile circle to get a feel for my new springs and roll bar brace, took it from just below full to just above half :eek: Very pleased with the way it handles now, but I think I need some new brake fluid. :lol1:
