Rally turbo/restrictor knowledge required

Hi Guys,

Im looking for a little help in understanding the turbo set up that I had on my Subaru v2 sti type ra ex club rally car.
The turbo was/is a td05 16g with a restrictor between the compressor housing and the 90 degree top entry bend, if that makes any sense.

So when u remove the top entry 90 degree bend which is pushed onto the restrictor and bolted to the compressor housing via 2 little bolts which were lock wired and fia tagged the turbo essentially becomes a front entry td05 16g albeit with no lip, ie a flat front to the compressor housing.
Now to my understanding the td05 16g was a top entry turbo and not front entry unless converted. My compressor housing looks oem with no signs of any work been carried out.
It essentially looks like it is a purpose made compressor housing to take a restrictor? Would this be correct?

Hope this makes sense to someone who has more knowledge than me on this subject. :wonder:

Thanks Tim.

So has the elbow been chopped to keep the restrictor within 50mm of the blades ? or is it stuck on top of the 90 degree ? after reading it again it seems that it has been chopped and machined to make the restrictor legal ,all the early GPN cars were like this to keep them within the 50mm .

The top entry 90 degree and compressor housing look almost oem, but like u say I suppose it could of been cut off. There is a machined lip internally towards the blades in the compressor housing which the restrictor sits against.
Then holes drilled and tapped to hold it all together where they put the fia tag on.
Just looks very well done, almost oem. But perhaps it isn't.
Is this common practice and how they convert them to run restrictors?
Thanks Tim.

That makes sense m8,
Somebody has made a bloody good job of it to be fair looks almost a factory job.
I was hoping someone could shed done light on it! So thank you!!
I like to understand things! Sad I know!! Lol.

My early GPN Prodrive car was done this way ,alot of restrictors were sold that just dropped in the top of the 90 degree ,which was easy to do but not legal !

Top man! Thanks for the info!! My head can stop spinning now!:thumb:

Yes agreed, I had a VF24 compressor housing that had been machined to accept a bolt on 32mm restrictor, with the mandatory 2 grub screws for the turbo seal.

The Prodrive made parts were a nice job and well put together,

answered on 22B but sounds exactly as we machine the top entry cars..........
