Business insurance working from home?

Basically I run my own business from home. I've got quite a bit of machinery and equipment that's set up in the utility room at the back of the house.

I'm just wondering, is anyone on here insured for running a business from home - I just need cover for the machines really.

I've tried to Google comparison sites etc, but cannot find any info on costs or even if I can get covered at all? All in all, I'd be looking at about 20k worth of cover.

If anyone on here is in a similar position, please could you point me in the right direction? Failing that, I was just going to ring our current house insurance and seeing if they would add the business side to the cover - Trouble is, I wouldn't know if its a good deal or not, as I've nothing to compare to..

My wife has similar, insured with Direct Line IIRC, about £300 a year IIRC for laser cutting and engraving including the machinery, public liability etc. It is separate to our home insurance policy which put on some exclusions about business so the two policies are intended to dovetail. Your house insurance may not pay out if you have a business visitor at the home and there is accidental damage for instance. Or if theft without signs of forced entry.

OK cheers for the info John. Just rang my current home insurance e-sure, but they won't cover me. I'll give direct line a try. Out of interest, do you use direct line for your home and business, or is it just covering the business side?

Different for home insurance because of property peculiarities. Neither insurer felt it was a problem having different companies insuring different aspects.

Just spoke to Direct line - they want £550 per year to cover 20k of equipment. I'm only paying £300 per year for the whole bloody house. thanks for the reply though, appreciated!! Looks like I'll have to shop around a bit

Shop around indeed. They may be offering you more than just covering the equipment, like public liability etc.

We use Hiscox; they seem to be decent enough.
