speaker upgrade

hello peeps got my 1998 s reg turbo wagon uk and the speakers are to say the least S.... want to change them but dont want a amp drawing power or the weight of a sub or any under seat sub so has any of you guys changed the front and rear door speakers ? what did you get what are the sizes looking for a nice bit of base and clear sound and deal with the 50 x 4 wattsfrom a pioneer

To get more bass (or any bass really) you need to increase the size of the cone. So really you should consider fitting 6.5" speakers in the doors. You'll need to be careful to choose speakers with correct depth to clear the window, you'll need some speaker rings and probably/possibly have to cut the doors a little to fit. Most important thing for good, clean bass is installation. Everything needs to be mounted very solidly to the door and you need to minimize as much vibration as possible.

Simplest solution would be to upgrade the front speakers with direct replacements and fit and active sub in the boot. In which case I wouldn't bother with the rear-speakers.

Mine uses 165mm speakers, which are to all intents, 6.5". They are Sony 3-way.

I made my own door spacers from 18mm mdf, thickly painted against damp, using the template that came with the Sonys and the original speaker frames.
I've heard that the fronts can use ready made spacers from a Corsa C.

I also stuck some sound deadening around the insides of the front doors, makes them vibrate less.

I tried with the Corsa spacers and they were garbage quite frankly. Might be the speakers that I was using but I had to modify them to fit and they were still far from satisfactory. YMMV.

Get some proper MDF baffles made is my advice. I even managed to by 2 pairs of Corsa rings...:cuckoo:
