(1) does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval and
(2) is so constructed that the area available for the fixing of the registration plate precludes the display on the plate of a registration mark in conformity with the requirements of regulation 14 (see the 2001 document).
This isnt exactly correct actually, if your car was imported before a date in 1999 you can fit the plates without any issue, then the law changed and it was decreed that if a standard sized plate could fit then it had to be fitted, if the (factory) mount wasnt able to fit (Mitsubishi Evo for instance) then you could fit a different type plate, it also applies to some other cars that dont have the same mountings (some US cars etc).

So basically if you are able to fit a standard plate then you have by law, fit it (unless as above the car was imported prior to x date in 1999, its on the vosa website somewhere).

Similar to tony above a few years back tried to drop the 14a section off the regulation 14 covering number plate sizing. which covered import. Part of the ANPR. Not sure if regulations are still valid though. Google maybe best friend
