Boost problem

Got a Bugeye with PPP and full decat

Just took off the Baileys **** valve and put a standard one on (previous owner liked going pshhhhhhhhh)

Anyway sometimes I get no boost and then sometimes I get full boost

Ie can be in first, change to 2nd put my foot down and no boost or very little (boost guage only shows about 2 psi max) change to 3rd and I will get boost upto about 15psi on the boost gauge

change to 4th and will have boost although only upto about 10psi and then none in 5th, drop to 4th and no boost, then slow right down and will have boost in 2nd and 3rd and 4th

Im sure its something stupid like a dirty boost solenoid or something like that ?

Any other things to check ? (car has been stood for about 18 months)

I should get torque pro on it and see what the AFR's etc are like

did you replace the dv gasket?? also reset the ecu??

IveGotTheBug 23 November 2014 11:12 PM

2 psi isn't even waste gate pressure, your BCS has nothin to do with it as you would still run spring pressure

IveGotTheBug 24 November 2014 12:05 AM

my advice, take it to a specialist

JohnSmith 25 November 2014 09:01 AM

I didnt replace the gasket or reset the ecu

the battery has been disconnected for 18 months, so that should have reset anything that requires the battery been off

It seems to boost ok in 1st and 2nd, then overboost is 3rd and then only a little boost in 4th and 5th

JDM_Stig 25 November 2014 10:11 AM

who decatted it ?
Was it mapped for this ?

JohnSmith 25 November 2014 11:54 AM

It was decatted about 6 years ago I think , maybe longer

I have cleaned the maf, throttle body, swapped the dump valve for a clean one :) and cleaned the boost solenoid and all the boost pipes too

Is there meant to be a small restrictor in one of the boost pipes like the classics?

There is a join between the boost pipes and that is a plastic coupler and not that restrictive

It boosts now up to 12 psi in 1st and 2nd, the 22 in 4th and 25 in fifth

and no idea if it was mapped, other than it had a PPP kit fitted (got the certificate) back in 2003 or something

My Bluetooth Torque Pro adapter doesnt work on the car so I cant check any logs at the moment

Could the problem be the wastegate / actuator ?

I do have a spare one and the one that is on is a bit rusty, and not that easy to move by hand

IveGotTheBug 25 November 2014 10:14 PM

Yes should be a restrictor if it doesn't have ebc or mbc,not sure on size but there is a thread on here somewhere

You shouldn't be able to move it by hand, run a hose from the turbo str8 to actuator to see if it holds steady,if it does your actuator is fine

IveGotTheBug 25 November 2014 10:15 PM

Sorry you shouldn't be able to move it easy by hand should be firm but not daft firm

JohnSmith 25 November 2014 10:23 PM

It is stiff moving it by hand but I can do it

When you say run a hose from the turbo straight to actuator, which bit am I trying to bypass ?

I have an old dawes device in the garage from my classic scoob, not been used for quite some time

Where should the restrictor be on a bug ? I would assume its the same place as a classic, and if that is the case then there isnt one, other than the plastic coupler, which does restrict the flow a little, but nothing like the little brass ones from the classics

IveGotTheBug 25 November 2014 10:30 PM

Your bypassing boost control solenoid to see if your actuator is faulty, and your restrictor should be 1.2mm in the turbo hose before the t piece

Ok, thought that was what you meant, will try that tomorrow

Defo no restrictor in that part of the pipe work, certainly nothing I could see feel or even when blowing through the pipes, I have no idea why there wouldnt be one in there either

the guy I got the car from never did anything himself, spent 7k on work like servicing, gearbox and usual tyres etc

JohnSmith 26 November 2014 02:50 PM

Just done a quick test, put in my dawes device and bypassed the boost solenoid and it boosts to about 16 psi in every gear (doesnt matter which way round I put the dawes either )

So I am guessing potentially the boost solenoid is foobarred

The restrictor is there, I found it in the small pipe under the intercooler not sure which way round it should be, whether turbo side or under intercooler side

JohnSmith 28 November 2014 06:01 PM

Here is an odd thing, did an ECU reset (FreeSSM) (no codes where showing) and took it for a run and it appears to be boosting normally through the gears

The only thing I changed was put a stock DV on instead of the baileys shat that has been on it for years LOL
