Sorry to say, with some exceptions, the usual England "malaise" has reared it's ugly head.

Campbell, Vassell, Beckham, Scholes, Seaman played well - the rest, well pretty rubbish IMHO.

Things can only get better....

Thanks

Gavin

Just wait for the Argie game or the Nigerians.

Why oh why didn't we kill it off in the first half when we had the chance. It should have been all over but we gave it away. Still, the Argentina game will have plenty of passion if nothing else :D

ScoobyJawa 02 June 2002 03:22 PM

Exactly, should have won the game in the first half. A typical performance by England and running around like headless chickens in the 2nd half.

"Oh hello Mr Swede, would you like the ball, here you go then", to quote most of the England players earlier

Maz-old 02 June 2002 06:11 PM

I don't know what game you were watching but Scholes was rubbish - failed to exert any authority on the game at all. He played too deep, kpt coming back to get the ball, when that was Hargreaves' job.

Campbell was also crap. Good goal, yes, but he ought to get his defensive frailties sorted first. Nearly let the Swedes in twice in the first half and got nowhere near Alexanderssen for the goal. Fell over instead.

Beckham was great for twenty five minutes, nothing more.

Vassell looked lively, but took too much away from Owen. Hesky as a left winger is so ineffective that Vassell and Owen were crossing in for him. Vassell is fast and look dangerous, but then Owen has to do the holding job for him.

No, we were rubbish. We didn't pass the ball at all, we didn't keep possession and we didn't play for each other. When I saw Heskey as left wing I cried. He CANNOT PLAY THERE. We are better off starting Heskey and Owen up front with Dyer or Hargreaves on the left and Butt with Scholes. Butt will let Scholes push up, Hargreaves has the running to play left wing and has pace as well, and can also defend is Ashley Cole goes forward. Then bring on Joe Cole and Vassell in the final half an hour as people are fading in the heat. Cole will get us free-kicks on teh edge of the area and Vassell's pace will terrify defenders who are tired form the heat. Especially in the earlier games.

Just MHO.

M.

England have a history of slow starts........i'm not worried.I think Owen/Heskey up front and a stronger midfield would give us a better team.A draw is not that bad, still looking forward to next Friday:)

GavinP 02 June 2002 07:25 PM

Scholes wasn't as active as usual but there again, he had little support IMHO.

I think Campbell had a good game - scoring obviously but compared to Ferdinand and Mills, he played a blinder!

Heskey played better than in other games I have watched with him in but still not good.

Once Beckham went off, there was no midfield which is not a good omen.

Was Owen playing ? ;)

All IMHO, of course :)

Thanks

Gavin

Why do we have that Leeds muppet Mills playing for England???? Get rid of him!!

Bad Bads 02 June 2002 08:23 PM

1st half OK but 2nd half poor.We seemed to lose our way when the swede's upped the tempo in the 2nd half.Early day's yet,a good result against the argie's and we are set for the second phase.
Cheers Paul.

They're coming home, they're coming home, England's coming home, they're coming home.

.........in four weeks time with the World Cup:):D

ChrisC 02 June 2002 11:49 PM

Er do I remember all the stories about the state of the England team and how they would be lucky to get a point - or was just when St David of Posh was injured ?
Truly not a good performance but it could have been worse and before Munich nobody thought we'd be here.
Bring on the French I say ! ! ! ! !!!!!!!

letdown 03 June 2002 05:32 AM

I was unfortunate enough to be at the game last night! Second half utter tosh! ...then those bunch of Muppets walked of the pitch without even a wave. Didnt bother me to much as I live out here, but a lot of the people around me were not amused. Anyway at least we didnt lose. Bring on Argentina !!

scoobynutta555 03 June 2002 09:52 AM

surprised i not seen any comments about Mills. I thought he was the weak link of the team, and i wasnr surprised when he gave the Swedes their goal.

I dont want him to play along with Heskey for the rest of the world cup. Whatever happened to Sheringham???

There were no playmakers on the pitch after Beckam left. Everyone was running around totally clueless, no authority whatsoever. After that "performance" ill be surprised if we even win a match. The first 40 mins of the match England were on a different level to the Swedes.

I predict that England will now wake up and significantly raise their game for the next 2 matches
