PC doesn't doesn't start on power up.
Bit of a random one, my PC has started, yesterday, to not turn on.
Press the button on the front, and it illuminates, but the bloody thing doesn't do anything. :brickwall:mad: Got in from work at about 7pm yesterday, and after multiple attempts it finally decided to start at 9.15pm. Got in from work tonight at 6.20pm, and it finally decided to start at 8.40pm. :wonder: Any ideas? |
Usually a sign of the psu on its way out mate.
|
Hi Micky
Looks like yours PSU is on way out as above Dubzy pointed out. When you power up PC,did you hearing the HDD and CPU cooler or does fan on PSU running ? Thanks,Jura |
Could be bios battery :)
|
Does it make any beeps when you power it on? If so the number of beeps = an error code telling what the issue is.
I'm with the above though that it's a knackered power supply and there aren't any beep codes. |
Hopefully the PSU, the worst case is something on the motherboard acting up that connects to the power supply
|
Other possibility is that your HDD is on it's way out and taking stupid long time to initialise.
|
Thanks for the suggestions folks, very much appreciated. :thumb:
BIOS battery has been replaced recently, Stu, along with the HDD and GFX card. Jura, none of the fans run when I power it up. They do when it decides to behave and actually start. No beeps on powering it up/non-starting. When it starts and gets to the post test, I just does a single beep, that indicates that there's no problems IIRC. Since it's actually working at the minute, I'll have a browse for a new PSU. Trying to search the net for stuff on my S3 mini is a pain in the arse. :lol1: |
Not having much luck with this one are you Micky ;) Time to chuck it in the bin and start again :) Or get a new PSU. Anything from Corsair will do.
|
What watt PSU? Current one is 450W, but, it doesn't have a specific supply for the GFX card, I had to use an adaptor on some molex plugs. |
Wattage is not that important unless you're running a power hungry GFX card and multiple drives/devices, quality is what counts, anything over 400W should suffice as per your last one. So don't buy some cheapo unbranded one.
|
By the sounds it's making, I'm going to need a new external HDD soon. It did get covered in beer a while back though. :lol1:
I'll have a look about mate. :thumb: |
Reckon 750W might be a bit overkill?
Bought the same one as this. |
Micky I will have one lying around that will do your crappy pc, are you capable of fitting it or do you want me to?
|
Hi Micky
I wouldn't put to yours 750W which is bit overkill for your needs,I would go with something like is 450-500W and personally I would choose modular or semi modular PSU Something like this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...23&subcat=2463 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...23&subcat=2462 http://www.ebuyer.com/store/Componen...rice+ascending I prefer modular PSU,with them you will have better cable management And about the HDD and this again depends on yours needs, but if its for boot disk then I would go with SSD,they're now cheap and if its as second HDD,then something like 1TB something like this should be great http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...14&subcat=1279 And SSD Crucial MX100 256GB is in my view winner for price and performance point of view http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...04&subcat=2394 Hope this help Thanks,Jura |

It will do for me, until I need to upgrade my PC. When that time comes, then I'll get an SSD. I paid next to nowt for the 500GB HD that's in there currently. When the time comes, it be with a new motherboard etc. As you know, I mainly only use it for browsing, so doesn't need to be massively spec'd. Thanks for your help mate. :thumb: |
If you use a desktop purely for web browsing it's never worth upgrading, just buy a laptop or a tablet or an android box. People only upgrade PCs to play better games as in why I'm playing call of duty advanced warfare on ultra everything in 2560x1600 res ;)
|
Don't like laptops, tablets aren't much better/worse, IMO. :)

On my PC I've not played games for while, although I can,but still prefer to play games with joypad/controller than with mouse and keyboard Only game which I always enjoy to play is Life for Speed and R Factor on PC,but most of the games I rather play on PS;) I've build PC only for rendering(V-RAY,Poser Pro,LuxRender and Octane) and for music production Steve do you have R9 290X ? Thanks,Jura |
Jura, yup that's the gpu
|
I hadn't realised how noisy my old PSU was, this new one is almost silent. :)
|
Now you will be able able to hear Lisa telling you what to do :)
