Go for any of the branded so called uprated bulbs, like Halfords Ultra Brilliance, (when on BOGOF), Philips Extreme, Ring 120% uprated, Osram Nightbreaker etc. All can be found at decent prices on t'internet.
DO NOT buy higher wattage bulbs. DO NOT buy cheap copies. AVOID so called Xenon bulbs, blue bulbs etc. DON'T be fooled by PIAA hype, they are the same as the above but twice the price and more. |
what about replacing H1 and H7 bulbs with LED ones, would that be ok
sorry to butt in frankyurry |
I have philips nightguide 3in1 , one just gone and I bought osram unlimited 12.80 on ebay, swapped one at a moment,id like to compare them at night on rain, looks light unlimited is brighter but could blind You on night with wet road, when 3in1 is developed to avoid it.
Thats about h1 Hb3 ive got osram nightbraker plus ,very good:thumb: |

sorry to butt in frankyurry Not sure that LED technology is far enough advanced for seeing by yet. |
Just replaced all 4 fronts for osram night breakers and the difference is night and day.:D
Much brighter and whiter than the ones that were in and a cheap replacement I got when one blew recently, which is what led me to the night breakers. After fitting 2 dipped beam ones I noticed immediately how much better they were so bit the bullet on the more expensive high beam ones and all I can say is I'm happy I did. Mind you the ones that were in there were in when I bought the car 3yrs ago so thought I might as well splash out, and keep the others in the car for emergency.:thumb: |

Another thought was for me to go down the HID route but do you need to have the washer jets and self leveling lights still or is there something else you need to have either or as well?

Let's answer you first question first: H4 is H4...whichever bulb you buy, it will fit.
Another thought was for me to go down the HID route but do you need to have the washer jets and self leveling lights still or is there something else you need to have either or as well? The reasons are complicated, but to try and simplify: the H4 is twin filament. The two filaments are quite close, one doing dip, one doing main beam. They are also shaped for the reflector in use and positioned to withing 0.1mm to give accurate beam patter, cutoff and low scatter. Sadly, no-one has yet invented a twin burner HID for H4. The H4 HID kits rely on a system that moves the burner...and it's not accurate enough. Add to that the FACT that the HID burner is a different shape to a halogen filament, a different size and aligned differently, and you can see, I hope, that an H4 "bulb" simply turn what is a poor headlight anyway, into awful...LOADS of scatter and not much more light. What you usually get is ACCEPTABLE dip, (since that's the bit that the MoT tester will look at), and AWFUL main beam. You can find some kits with those two reversed and I've also seen others which were just God-awful...worse than standard halogen.:( Lastly, the bit about headlamp washers and leveling. The regs ACTUALLY say that IF headlamp washers and leveling are fitted, they must work. There is NO requirement to have either. HTH BTW: Can't answer about the choice Osram/Ring, mine has proper HID in projectors, running a proper HID burner, not a halogen replacement. TBH, that's the way to go, but you need the clear headlights from the 99>> cars. See here: https://www.scoobynet.com/technical-...mpler-way.html And for pics of the output of my setup with Morettes before I went HID projector, see here: https://www.scoobynet.com/technical-...-lamp-kit.html post 26. |
Most of that went over my head :( lol
The reason why I asked about the HID's is that I have just ordered some for my Lincoln limo and I was told that unless they were self leveling lights with washers it would fail an mot. So was just wondering if it was the same across the board for all cars? The fitment on the Lincoln is H9007 and what I have ordered is hi and low. I decided not to go down the crystal route on this classic for now but went clear across all lights. And tbh I am swinging towards the Osram Ultimate. I do like what you done with your lights though, they looked really smart and different :thumb: |
Hmmmmmmmm.
Hi and Low? So TWO PAIRS of bulbs? Should be reasonable, it's only really h4 that's a total messup. And no, you should be OK with MoT unless the beam pattern is all over...which is possible with cheaper kits, since the bulbs aren't made accurately...the accuracy needs to be +/- 0.1mm, no more. Cheap bulbs can be as much as +/- 1mm, and that includes halogens:( |

Hi and Low? So TWO PAIRS of bulbs? Fawor, I meant the question about what lights/bulbs are better and you meant the fitment. So wires crossed there :D And I thought that H4's were the same, but just wanted to double check. So I ordered the Audi TT ones for £10.98p |
Oh dear.....those are the total abortion of a bulb I was on about.........
|
What Osram Nightbreaker Ultimate? Or you talking about the HID's which I got about a month ago? :)
|
The order of performance I've found in H4 fitment:
Standard/stock bulbs you get for a few quid Osram Nightbreakers Unlimited PIAA Plasma GTX (JDM/USDM only not available in the UK without importing) HID Retrofit WITH projectors so you're not using your standard halogen housings which can scatter light, dazzle and fail an MOT, as above I got my HID stuff from these guys: http://www.theretrofitsource.com/com...trsdefaultview |
