Cant wait to see results of the map!

Me too :D.

OK, so today was the day. Met up with Duncan at SSR, first time I've been to their new site in Farnborough. So queue car on dyno pics:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...psc70a3e69.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...psc4badd52.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...psbe3160bf.jpg At this point my arse is trying to turn itself inside out with worry having built the engine myself and worrying about every little thing that could go wrong. Duncan assures me it'll all be fine, but this makes no difference . Anyway Duncan writes a map for the car and I start to see some numbers come up on the screen, and also started hearing the nasty screeching noise again at the top end, more on that in a minute. Anyway here are the dyno plots: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...ps858ae9f7.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...ps32984a05.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...ps7ab75d6e.jpg 316 Bhp and 330 lbs ft, that nasty screeching noise is a dying turbo unfortunately which is flat lining at higher rpm and its therefore not making the power it should. Still 316 brake on a ruined turbo isn't bad going  The main thing is the engine is absolutely bang on and lovely and running amazing which was my main concern, TD05's are cheap, engines are not :D. So next job is to find another decent TD05 (think i might have already), new up pipe / downpipe gaskets and stick that on, quick map tweak on the road again to check all is well and jobs a good un. :luxhello: |
That's good going, what's up with the turbo? Seems to make decent boost 1.45 bar tapering to 1.3 bar at 6k. You can't run more than 1.5 bar and keep the boost cut feature.
Nice and fat at 11.5:1, that's where I've mapped mine at the same boost |
Just looked at boost map again, peak boost at 3750 rpm, that's late for a 16g, is it mapped that way? Easier on gearbox?
I'm getting 1.45 bar at 3200 on std 2.0 WRX engine |
The turbo is shafted, its squealing its tits off at higher rpm. I think the way the boost comes in is different on the road vs the dyno because I can get 1 bar by 2600 rpm on the road. Whereas on the dyno its 1000rpm later.
You can see the potential there from the torque figure though, so new turbo, another map tweak and it should be all good. |
Time for a bigger turbo, brand new 20g for £180 off ebay
|
Going to stick with a 16G, unless an 18G pops up some where. When I go bigger, it'll be SC46 or similar :).
|
I might have a nearly new SC46 up for grabs soon. Less than 1000 miles. ;)
|
Plan is to 6 speed it first, then do the turbo.
For now I just want to be able to enjoy it again and drive it, then in the future move on to a bigger turbo. |

Probably fun while it lasts though

What is the failure point? Not a complicated device by any means, a shaft with two wheels and three bronze bearings on it. Yes you must pay loads of money for a decent one, then it will never go wrong. Ha. My Chinese 20g lasted and performed perfectly well, but that's another story, for another day. I bet the turbo lasts longer than the big end bearings... |
Which 20G did you run then? I'm assuming you stripped it and rebuilt it before fitting it?
I'm not 100% convinced my turbo is dying, I think I might have an up pipe leak where it joins the manifold. |

I'm not 100% convinced my turbo is dying, I think I might have an up pipe leak where it joins the manifold. I ran a TD05 20g (7cm tdo5 ex housing) eBay job, didn't have to touch the turbo before bolting it on. I've had several of the eBay T34's in bits for various reasons, quality is as good as any turbo I've stripped before. I am a machinist to trade so know what to look for/ measure on a manufactured component. The 7cm 20g's are little bigger than an 18g. So more like a 19G (ffs) if they ever made one. I ha tubular headers and had 1.3 bar by 3600 on my 2.0. Held that to redline. I dare say it would hold 1.45 bar to the redline and flow more than the 16g for it. Circa 360 hp turbo . |
It is tempting, but still feel like its a bit of a gamble.
There's this one for £180 quid or so: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/for-Subaru...item20d4cf31dd It looks like the water lines attach either side rather than both on the same side though. That's a 7cm exhaust housing. I'm not sure what else it would take to get it on. Anyway I've ordered a new OEM lower up pipe gasket and i'll have a look at that this weekend as thats where its most common to leak from. When the noise first started it would come and go, whereas now its all the time. But it's only when you get it up in the revs it starts screaming, and you can feel the power flatten off. The TD05 I fitted had about 40k miles on it at the time, its only done about another 5 or 6k miles on my car, doesn't smoke, spools fine, boosts fine, so I doubt its the turbo. |
From what I can remember it bolted straight on, no issues at all with water pipes. Most of those eBay 20g's are comming with a 1 year warranty. Nothing to gamble there.
Edit: I've got the same turbo in my watch list, comes with one year warranty |
It looks like you can swap the bungs around on it anyway. The compressor housing is a fair bit bigger though, you didn't have any issues with it catching anything?
I think you should buy it first, then i'll follow  |

I'll buy the turbo, you supply me with a Quattro conversion kit ;) :D

20G on a WRX TMIC?
I am seriously tempted, but worried about it ruining my lovely new engine if it goes pop :S |

So how many miles have you put on it?

My mate has ran two Chinese turbos on his V6 golf too. No catastrophic failures of any of them. I have the t34 off the golf under my bench at work, I melted the turbine wheel a bit through excessive EGT's (tuning/back pressure issue) and I wore the bearings a bit on the one I did 12,000 miles with, but that could be blamed on the ford oil pressure! |
So that's seven Chinese turbos I have had dealings with.
|
That's guy knocked that turbo down to £166 overnight. So erm guess what:
