Enjoyed reading m8

ScottyPPP 08 October 2014 06:36 PM

Cheers :).

Euro spec tail light has arrived, nice quick postage. So i'll fit that this weekend.

Ordered the first lot of fully synth from Opie too, 10w40 Gulf competition which will be going in not this weekend the weekend after with another new filter, then the weekend after that I should be getting the map tweaked hopefully.

Took the rings off of the piston:

Thought I would clean up one of what I thought were the other 3 good pistons to use as an ashtray as you do. Ran it through the dishwasher a few times. After it was clean(ish) I noticed 2 cracks in the ringlands, so pulled the rings off and another chunk of piston fell out

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...ps6ddfb0a8.jpg

Its black behind where the piece of ringland came out so its clearly been blowing on that one too. Couldn't see the cracks until it was cleaned up, going to check the last 2 pistons also.

Car is running lovely still, nearly 800 miles under its belt now. Its very very smooth, a lot smoother than the old lump ever was, the idle is really silky.

ScottyPPP 19 October 2014 05:27 PM

Did hopefully my last oil change for at least a couple of thousand miles yesterday :). Oil that came out looked really good, no more metal flake effect in it so it looks nicely run in now :).

Also fitted my LHD spec drivers side rear light so that both rear lights match:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...ps8e0125c3.jpg

Only issue is the Fog light LED bulb I've bought is absolutely pony, its just about as bright as the normal headlights .

So I'll need to find a brighter one.

Hoping to get the map tweak done in the next couple of weeks :).

ScottyPPP 26 October 2014 05:50 PM

Fitted a Bug Sti scoop undertray, it goes straight under a blob WRX scoop! You have to modifiy it slightly where it bolts to the bonnet as some of the bolts that are used to attach the scoop catch, but its very easy. It's actually not quite as high as the blob WRX scoop and there is about a 3mm gap at the top so i'm going to put a bit of weather strip or something on the top of it to seal it to the top of the scoop.

First problem encountered with the new engine....

I think my PCV valve is ruined. Basically if you drive the car around normally its fine and drives normal. If you give it some boost at higher rpm it starts to blow oil out of the rockers and occasionally makes a boost leak / screaming flutter noise. So I think the valve is stuck allowing boost into the crankcase.

The PCV is original so I would think its gunked up to hell from running on an engine with blown ringlands. I've ordered a replacement which will hopefully solve the issue :).

modrich 28 October 2014 12:06 PM

Blimey, I'm surprised you didn't clean this when the engine was out Scotty, any pics of this?

ScottyPPP 28 October 2014 12:22 PM

Yeah that was one thing I forgot :D.

I've ordered a brand new OEM one, £17 delivered, So i'll fit it this week. I'll get some pics when I do it, it's mounted under the TB, you have to remove the TMIC to get to it, then a 19mm deep socket or spanner to remove it. Its just a valve that opens at vacuum and closes with boost, but I don't think mine is closing, allowing boost from the intake mainfold down the PCV pipes into the crankcase.

Which would explain why it only leaks at higher rpm with boost and the noise.

modrich 28 October 2014 01:14 PM

Thanks Scotty, added to my list of things to check & clean

boosted 28 October 2014 04:45 PM

Subscribed to this, are you fitting a bigger turbo before the remap?

ScottyPPP 28 October 2014 05:14 PM

Sticking with the 16G for now. Should make about 350/350 on that. Then in the future if I want to go bigger i've got headroom on the engine anyway. (Need an Audi 6 speed swap though ;)).

A 16G on a 2.1 should make for a very nice road car, really spooly and punchy.

Map is booked for the 7th of November at SSR with Duncan. So hopefully the PCV valve sorts the oil leak issue out before then! Really don't fancy stripping all the rocker covers off again.

boosted 28 October 2014 06:37 PM

I'm rocking a 16g on my car and I like it a lot.
Maybe go 18g next year and 360bhp.
That is det that has killed those pistons, hopefully your new mapper will make a better job!
You might want to consider water injection or octane booster to make the most from the 16g, and be on the safe side!

ScottyPPP 28 October 2014 07:10 PM

I liked it on the 2.0 until it went pop

I'm not so sure it was DET as the piston tops are clean as a whistle. The OEM pistons aren't the strongest things in the world.

ScottyPPP 01 November 2014 04:21 PM

Replaced the PCV valve earlier. The original one was pretty gummed up. But it's not solved the valve cover leak. So I need to strip it off and reseal it all again.

Much more of a pain in the arse with the engine in the car. Also going to have to postpone the map tweak until the following week because I can't put it on the dyno with it smoking.

I could do it tomorrow but the weather is going to be wet so not the best idea.

I pulled the timing belt cover off and the can seals are fine so just the valve cover, so could be worse.

boosted 02 November 2014 07:42 AM

Be carefull if using silicone or similar, when I rebuilt my car after it running the middle ends I pulled the sump off to find a lot of silicone in the oil pick up from a previous repair to cam cover leaks!

ScottyPPP 02 November 2014 12:32 PM

Not sure it is the valve covers again now

Its so hard to tell as you can see next to **** all down there, even from under the car. But the valve covers would drip over night I would think, then the car would smoke when the exhaust got hot enough. They'd also leak all the time not just when you give the car a bit of welly.

I think its the plastic breather that bolts to the top of the valve cover, as I may have lost a bolt a while ago from it :D. And in the missing bolt hole I can see oil... And oil staining from the breather down the valve cover.

So if anyone has a spare bolt let me know, I'm going to pinch a bolt from the other side and see if it stops the leak :D.

Few recent pics:

Bugeye STi scoop undertray fitted:

This is all you have to do to get a Bugeye STi undertray to fit:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...psece4e393.jpg

Just notch out around the bolts that hold the scoop to the bonnet and it fits like a glove.

For Modrich the location of the PCV:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v9...ps260cd398.jpg

You can see it threaded into the intake manifold under the TB coolant hose.

modrich 02 November 2014 09:13 PM

Thanks for the pic Scott:thumb:

Hope you get the oil leak sorted, sounds like one of those PITA jobs that would be a doddle if the engine was on the bench!

ScottyPPP 02 November 2014 10:20 PM

With the engine out everything is easier

I've convinced myself it's that plastic head breather causing the leak now, I need to find a replacement bolt to fit it and change the gasket on it. Probably only Subaru have the bolt, nearest dealer is miles away too!

modrich 02 November 2014 10:39 PM

Phone them, my dealer is miles away too but they do free delivery! Yours might to.

Any m6 bolt you have lying about will do

ScottyPPP 03 November 2014 05:02 PM

So long as its the right length :).

bullawayo 04 November 2014 12:42 AM

eBay is your friend for the bolt! I use rs components for all my fittings at work

ScottyPPP 04 November 2014 12:15 PM

Ordered 3x M6 x 1.0 x 16mm as I think 16mm should be long enough but not too long :).

boosted 04 November 2014 01:39 PM

Too short should be 20mm
http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/a...psvtpfwbrt.jpg

ScottyPPP 04 November 2014 01:57 PM

Lol, I was trying to decide between 16 or 20mm, and plumped for 16mm as I thought even if the original bolt was 20mm then 16mm should still get enough threads to bolt the covers down.

ScottyPPP 04 November 2014 02:11 PM

Sod it, ordered some 20mm's too. Should all be here before the weekend.

ScottyPPP 09 November 2014 06:59 PM

Oil leak is now resolved :).

Replaced the gasket and the missing bolt, got a bit of smoke to start with which was just residue burning off and its been fine since. Ready to be mapped on Friday!

modrich 09 November 2014 09:51 PM

Good job, glad it's fixed, now the fun really starts...
