Values of mint classics are on the rise.
Thousands have been broken for spares recently meaning that the classic shape Impreza is actually becoming a rare beast.

Rarity pushes prices up, especially when people are starting to have more disposable income.

A lot of members on here still think a mint classic with no rust is still only worth 2.5k.
 Find one. And I do mean a low mileage , no rust example. They just don't come up very often at all.

Forget what you have seen on this site for the last few years. Impreza prices in general, are on the up.

Just for clarity; I think and have said on multiple threads that Classics are on the rise, decent ones will most definitely be going the way of Ford Escorts, not a doubt in my mind about that, which is why I have what I believe to be the best of them tucked away in my garage and i'm in no rush to do anything about it.

FYI; V3 STI Type R WILL be one of the most desirable classics, full stop. I've been around long enough to know that it's the ONE to have if your a purist and a driver, which is the reason I have one, not the best example or the lowest milage @74k but it's mine and i'll make it sweet when the time comes.

P1's can suck my ball sack, I know what's what.:thumb:

Nothing- it's identical to the jdm engines and the map is identical barring some very minor knock correction to try to cater for the uk's lower Ron petrol that doesn't really work that well but that's at least better than an unmapped JDM sti which has no additional correction whatsoever. So a P1 engine is no more chocolate than say a ver3, v4,5,6 sti / sti ra/ type r. A lot of nonsense spouted about how the jdm are better/ stronger.

A P1 is basically an sti type r body with Sti V engine mechanicals. The reason it's desirable in the Uk is that it's suspension was tuned to UK roads plus it's looks. It is soft on the track, but it's quicker down a bumpy Uk B road than an over sprung JDM equivalent, like it or not.

I think the opposite has happened in regards to the P1. I've just done the same, non-scientific test I did a few months ago. There are currently 7 P1's on Ebay for sale, and 6 Type R's. I think a lot of people have realised there is no reason to buy a P1 over a Type R, especially when it comes to price.
P1 prices have lowered over the last couple of years, Type R's if anything have gone up.
And nobody is able to say for sure how many Type R's there are in the UK, but we know there was 1000 P1's to begin with.

Gear Head 19 August 2014 01:01 PM

You see, I just don't see that.

How many Impreza's have been broken for spares recently?
Even nice ones.

This is what is killing them off, not rust or inexperienced driver's.
At some point, nice ones will bottom out (which I believe they have).

I believe that in around 2 years time, mint classic prices will be going up fairly quickly.

Carnut 19 August 2014 01:10 PM

It's incredible how fast prices of classic cars can shoot up when the tide turns, and it's not necessarily the best model's but the iconic one's.

In response to an earlier question about why l feel P1s are starting to appreciate.

Only a thousand made, obviously the numbers remaining are reducing year on year, so there is an increasing rarity value.

There is a direct link to Prodrive, which people like.

There is a very good owners club, with a lot of help available - P1woc and you can see an increasing number of new members looking for good examples.

A number of magazine articles stating what good cars P1s are and this is for cars that haven't been produced for 13 years, this keeps them in people's mind.

Top Gear magazine did a 20 year anniversary special listing their 50 greatest cars over the 20 years the magazine, they put the P1 at number 16. I understand that this months Evo have a P1 in their top 20 of something this month - sorry not sure what as l haven't got a copy yet

So my opinion is that prices will begin to rise over the next few years, l would suggest 8-11k will be common in a few years obviously l think this will be for good reasonably standard cars.

Originally there should have been only 500 P1's, so they lost there exclusivity.

The Type R (Retna) is the direct link to Prodrive who diluted it for the UK roads.

There is a very good Type RA (Race Altered) owners club. Which is much more knowledgable than the P1 site.

The magazines tested the P1 in isolation and not against the original base car, the Type R. Have a look in the back of Evo Magazine at the car spec pages, the Classic STi comes out on top and "is the one to have".

I have an original V3 WRX Type RA, no spoilers, skirts stuck on, 4 pots added (for safety) with only A/C added at the factory. It's done less miles than the advertised P1 (but it's still got the original clocks still in KMS 72,000).

These where the base for many early Rally Cars. Will they go the same way as Escort shells? Rarer than hen's teeth, so should it be appreciating?

Scrappy9 19 August 2014 02:54 PM

Yes thanks for that, not sure what point you are trying to make really.

The car you own might appreciate more than P1s do, if so good luck to you.

I am not interested in arguing the merits, you asked me a question which l answered, you may feel not very well which is fine, however l still feel P1s will appreciate over the coming years.

I don't think it was meant that way, more along the lines of 'the one to have'. It was cottoned on a long time ago that the p1 had the good bits removed apart from the springs whereas the type r, RA etc are seen more as drivers cars.
Finding a p1 isn't difficult, as stated there are 7 for sale currently on one site, let alone anywhere else. Yet people seem to search long and hard for a decent RA.
As turbo 2000's seem to be breaking at a rate of 100 a day in the end there will be less of these on the roads than probably p1's etc, but will never be the one to have.

How many type R's were made?
My v4 has done less than 1000 miles in 3 years I'm hoping it will go up in value not that I'll ever sell her :norty:

V3 STi Type R will defo be a classic because I own one!!!:D

classic!!!:thumb:

Carnut 19 August 2014 06:37 PM

A lot of people buy classic because they used to admire them when they were younger or had a connection with them, for me when the p1 came out it's all I wanted but didn't even know what a Type r /ra was.

LuckyWelshchap 20 August 2014 01:27 AM

Brand spanking new P1 at the dealer's when I picked up my first Scooby (2-yr-old Cat).

Always had the dream/drive that one day I'd own one.

Forget it.
Had a Mexico, dreamt of an RS2000 (1800 even).

Loved a Quattro, dreamed of it.

Is it not all about 'faster, safer, easier' ?

The JP Lotus paved the way for today, but would anyone go back to that era?

As they say, whatever floats your boat I suppose.

Haha, thanks.

I don't know whether it is because the last blobeyes were pre £490 tax band, but decent ones seem to be holding strong at £5-£6k. I paid £4700 for mine a year ago. Yes, I've spent a good grand on it making it a minter, bit I sir, am a happy boy! :thumb:

ditchmyster 20 August 2014 07:42 AM

I'd say it's not so much the £490 as it's only £190 more than the Blob, which in the greater scheme of running a Subaru isn't exactly a fortune, the chocolate 2.5 engine however is the deal breaker at an extra £2.5k upwards to make it as it should have been from the factory.

I also think that in another 5/10yrs the Blobs will become sort after in the same way that the classics are beginning to now, as tidy low milage ones are quite difficult to source now.
