Coolant top up
How often do you top up your coolant in the white bottle.Does any of it evaporate from the bottle through the heat of the engine
|
I've had some fun working this out on my car. Basically from my understanding the level in the 'overflow tank' (by headlight) will raise slightly as the coolant expands (if its pushing coolant through the tube on the cap, then thats a positive HG sign).
When you turn off the car and the coolant cools, and the header tank (on engine) will suck coolant back from the overflow as the level in the HT drops while cooling. Don't think coolant should evaporate no? |
Ive topped the coolant bottle up now ive not been any where in it today. But normally when I get back home from work I open the bonnet and just check the car over to see if everything is ok I notice my coolant was a little low engine was hot and topped it up.My theory was the under bonnet temps on a Subaru are shocking and I thought with the coolant bottle being plastic it would warm up with heat making water evaporate a bit.

I don't think coolant will evaporate that easily. When changing mine i drained from the bottom hose, and when i started the car after about 4 mins there was plumes of steam coming from the exhaust headers - which was the spilled coolant evaporating. Took a long while for it to clear.
Unless you're using just plain water to top it up? Then i guess it 'could' evaporate, but even then i'd be surprised as its enclosed? |
Ive only got water in the system at the moment.I will put anti freeze in soon
