Virgin not deliverying the speed

I keep getting issues with my Virgin connection dropping out or running very very slow for the supposed 30 meg connection i am paying for

http://www.speedtest.net/result/3617106625.png

any suggestions on improving it?

stevebt 11 July 2014 03:56 PM

I had similar issues recently and it turned out to be my router. I bought a Netgear r6300 model and everything was great.

Get on the phone mate they do take the piss if you let them.SJ.

paulr 11 July 2014 06:03 PM

Is that with the superhub2?

hodgy0_2 11 July 2014 06:44 PM

Why is the server in germany

Cocker 11 July 2014 08:01 PM

120mb here with Virgin, soon to receive 150mb!

gazzawrx 11 July 2014 08:16 PM

For over a year i paid for a 60meg connection with virgin, i never got more than 30meg and after having numerous phone calls with them over the course of a year it eventually turned out they had me on a 30meg connection speed. I asked them for a refund of the outstanding balance and they pretty much told me to fook off. Virgin are a waste of time of late.

riiidaa 11 July 2014 08:43 PM

you had them banged to rights upon their admission, are you sure you weren't offered credit / discount to redress the issue

Adrian F 12 July 2014 01:27 AM

Paulr it appears to be a superhub I got it spring 2013 when I took out the contract. I have rebooted it to see if the issue went away but it hasn't

Hodgy0_2 I tried it with the default Uk server in London and the speed was about the same so tried a different European server and posted the poor speed.

Not only is it slow it will time out loading Google home page on wifi !

Contract is up soon so might have a look at other options especially as Virgin have tried to include the contract cost twice in the 15 months I have been with them

Ah ok that makes sense

Is that speed the same throughout the day, or does it vary

When I had poor speed it was ok during the day, but would fall of a cliff at about 5.00pm - this was consistant every day

It was obviously in my case some sort of contention issue

No mate they never offered me a penny or any credit back. I cancelled the services there and then and have never been back.

i will never deal with virgin again.

I was also having this issue along with my slow speeds, it is 110% their side, dont let them fob you off.

Have a look in your modem (router) at the levels.

Start with up and downstream power levels, different people will give you different levels to work from, but basically downstream you want as close to 0 as possible and upstream around 40-45 (ideally).

Where am I looking for a 0 on the downstream?

Attachment 74353

My line speed is perfect for 99% of the time but this morning is a bit flaky, not enough for me to notice without Speedtest.net

pimmo2000 16 July 2014 12:29 PM

Chances are that down stream is dropping when other users come on line. Power levels could be a bit higher. (received power level)

That said, if you didn't notice, why care? ;)

Adrian F 16 July 2014 10:35 PM

checked the speed tonight and got 14 meg one time and this the next

all on a 30 meg connection but much better than earlier suggesting the issue is not the router but Virgin having to many customers i think?

dazdavies 17 July 2014 09:20 AM

Mine's alright :D

I had the Superhub 1 and was on the 30mb connection and never had an issue with it - would always get the 30mb even at peak times and wireless connections would be excellent on all devices connected to it.

Recently I upgraded our package to the 152mb internet which come with the superhub 2 and since then my speeds have been all over the place from 1mb up to 160mb and wireless devices constantly lose connection :(

The SH2 is a much better piece of equipment so that's really odd .. how are you power levels when the connection slows?

Could be a faulty device I guess.

I've not looked at the power levels but i've had a VM tech out and he's checked everything and changed connections etc. then after a long while of being here and phone calls to his manager he tells me that there's too much usage in the area which is slowing it down (he did use some technical term).

He said it's going to be some time in October before the issue is rectified as it involves replacing cables etc. so I am getting £10 a month off my bills until it's sorted - not great but **** happens...

30 and 150 are Docsis 3 so I can't see how you'd drop speed, maybe not gain over 30.

Can you post your power levels?

It's all I've ever wanted :)

Those look good, nicely within range. I'd need your modem MAC to have someone look at your connection, but I wouldn't ask for it as it would give me your personal details and I'd strongly suggest you never post your details (including MAC address) online for your own safety.

;)

JDM_333 03 August 2014 03:56 AM

You don't need his MAC at all, why are you asking for that? What can you possibly do with his MAC code to improve his connection? nothing.

Your bandwidth is determined by your distance from the exchange pure and simple, as for the crow flies no end of "troubleshooting" from these "experts" is going to change it. Another factor is noise levels, between your house and the exchange, any noise levels beyond your control will affect your bandwidth. Now i will provide a real life example, i am with sky and i used their router for a while it gave me 18mbps then i introduced pfsense and now i get 28mbps...........???

:lol1: he's on cable so that's all utter ****e ..

and it's his MAC address, not a migration code, you know to identify him on the network ..

Move along son, nothing to see here.
