MOT - will this fail?

I have an old estate car with headlight washers/wipers. One of these has got mangled and doesn't work. Would this be an MOT fail?

Thank you, David

Usually, if an item is fitted - and it's on the MOT 'menu' - then it must be fit for for purpose i.e. do what its supposed to. That's certainly true of OEM stuff (not sure about aftermarket).

So, if you can't get it working, just kick it off. :D

OK. I can take the wiper bit off but it will still squirt wash water, so half working

I know the bit about "if something is fitted" as I was at a car show and next to me was Ed China who turned up on this street legal sofa bed. No lights, indicators etc etc but fine to take on M25

Ed China, FTW.

The front pair never worked on my saab... ( i pulled the fuse)

It never failed or had an advisory on any MOT it went in for

I only scrapped it this march

You can fail an MOT for wipers.

joz8968 04 July 2014 07:26 PM

I guess it just depends which MOT station you take it to. Just like for when some turn a blind eye to emissions, etc.

s1wrx 04 July 2014 07:33 PM

These are none testable items, (not fitted to every car so are not testable):thumb:

The horse's mouth.

Tyre-fitter 05 July 2014 06:33 AM

It shouldn't fail if headlight wipers do not work, just leave the water spray conected as some cars do not have headlight wipers just the water to clean them

Andy.

Pass with an Advisory.SJ.

ALi-B 05 July 2014 07:29 AM

Not even an advisory; if it doesn't have HIDs it won't be checked

billythekid 05 July 2014 07:32 AM

If its proper mangled just check it does not get in the way of the beam. Or like you say remove. Ensure there is no spindle sticking out if poss.

joz8968 05 July 2014 08:52 AM

"Nice headlamps."

David Lock 05 July 2014 01:31 PM

Thanks a lot guys. I'll probably get a replacement anyway but no rush then.

I was leafing through ebay as you do and the replacements are around £10 - £20 but then I came across the following on offer. WTF is going on here? Return postage is even quoted as being £46 FFS.

After posting above I looked more closely at Post 9 (Speedking - thanks :)) and if car has LED or HID lights then "A headlamp levelling or cleaning device inoperative or otherwise obviously defective" is a FAIL.

I know sod all about lights so do you think above would apply to an ancient 1996 Volvo? I can't find any help on Volvo searches but maybe this type of bulb is a modern thing?

David

pacenote 05 July 2014 04:05 PM

Can't see a 1996 Volvo having HID lights and LED lights are a recent thing

gazzawrx 06 July 2014 08:19 AM

It shouldnt have hid's as standard, i dont even think the hid's were on the maket in 1996.
if it has then itll fail on the washers not working, if it had standard lights then the washers arent testable really.

billythekid 07 July 2014 12:47 PM

First HIDs were 93/94 on BMW 7 series and Merc S Class.
State of the art at the time, was not until 96 really till they became more popular.

David Lock 07 July 2014 01:58 PM

So how do I tell?

David

joz8968 07 July 2014 02:05 PM

Presumably it'll be fitted with projector lenses and ballast resistors, if you have them?

Well silly me! Like I'd know what a "projector lense and ballast resistor" is :wonder:

Light just seems to have a regular bulb to spot the Mooses :)

David

I can't tell if that's sarcasm? :wonder:

If it is, then I genuinely apologise for insulting your intelligence. :(

speedking 07 July 2014 03:58 PM

From my useful link:

HID lamps may be identified by:
· taking a few seconds to reach full intensity
· having a bluish tinge to the light
· having an igniter module/inverter behind the headlamp
· having ‘DCR’ marked on the headlamp lens

That's what the MOT inspector uses :thumb:
