"Performance" headers?

There's been a bit of talk around about after market headers and a couple of cheaper versions which seem to actually cost power rather than encourage it.
We were asked to fit a set recently which we rejected on inspection out of hand. These have a collector which uses the four pipes sharply cut off, with a collar directly opposite. The collar has a quarter circle section, with a 90 degree edge presented to the gas flow. I'd describe this design as disastrous!
We tend to stick to the RCM version, which has a much smoother outlet. I guess you expect to get what you pay for.

Also some up pipes are suspect as well, as i found out from needing one for my impreza.

Fai17 29 June 2014 11:14 AM

I thought toyosport was a good brand!

netbeast 29 June 2014 11:22 AM

Is the first picture not exhaust, though?

I understand you would want them to be cut and welded so that it forms a more or less rounded section when entering, like I saw yesterday on the Aston Martins in Prodrive, but from what I understand, this is not countering the gas flow, but blowing it out, and technically, the only thing there might be turbulence, as the gas is not hitting the 90 degree edge.

Or am I getting it wrong and the flange is actually smaller in diameter than the pipe where the 4 header pipes enter? Or is it a single piece of a pipe that has been compressed so as to present the gas flow with compression?

Is it a genuine TOYOSPORTS, though?

rooferman 29 June 2014 11:32 AM

Billet collectors with slip joints would be nice too see on aftermarket headers.

fat-thomas 29 June 2014 11:33 AM

Toyosports.....japspeed....
Cheap eBay crap bought by the uneducated

+1 how big of an issue, if any, is copying in the aftermarket parts?

fat-thomas 29 June 2014 11:40 AM

Genuine toypsports are crap so does it matter??

RoyPinhey 29 June 2014 11:56 AM

In fairness in my younger days I had toyosports exhaust manifolds on an mx5 and Saxo vts I had . . Then again they arnt performance vehicles . . And those were the days when I only worked part time!

Yep, all made in the same factory and then each company just weld their own badge on. The same with the intercoolers too.

joe v3sti 29 June 2014 01:03 PM

I once got given a japspeed down pipe. What a load of cheap nasty crap!

Need a nice ebay rehoused TD05/06 20g from scoobynet classifieds to go with that awesome system :)

JGlanzaV 29 June 2014 03:41 PM

So has anyone disproved the myth about RCM and japspeed etc been the same yet?

banny sti 29 June 2014 03:55 PM

The quality ones are all made by these guys

I believe Cobra make all of RCM's exhaust parts and then they are just re branded.

Trinity 29 June 2014 04:14 PM

Toyosport are alibaba specials...similar to Japspeed....the factories in China stamp your brand name on for free :) The way people can 'trust' a brand because they come up with a website and some marketing but then moan at the counterfeit HKS valves (all made in the same factories folks!) never ceases to amaze me..

A lot of waste though using a billet

The flange is too small and very poorly designed for flow. I'd say severe turbulence.

I've no idea where it comes from, just that it's cack.

birchy2010 29 June 2014 10:52 PM

This is why I waited and picked up rcm headers.

Cocker 30 June 2014 08:11 AM

So what are the best headers? RCM?

1999wagon 30 June 2014 08:16 AM

My standard headers are rusted beyond belief, now i have a almost new japspeed header, should I not fit this to a mildly modded car?

What's rusted on them because you may find it's just the shielding and nothing else. On a lightly modded car you could easy take a step backwards fitting some bad design aftermarket headers, you have an option to either work on your own or pick another set of OEM up and remove all the shielding grind the lugs off and wrap them then at the same time port them open slightly smoothing the flow.

Would you agree Alan ?

1999wagon 30 June 2014 08:33 AM

So a new stainless Japspeed header is worse than a 13 year old header?

That's a debate I'm not going to step into but with some old OEM parts they are not always lost because they are rusty. Quite often there are recovery options available. I've just refreshed mine last summer and that's off a 19 year old car, all I'm saying is because it's rusty does not mean it's broken :)

1999wagon 30 June 2014 08:48 AM

Got it, now do I sell mine or clean up the old one? Or keep as a spare?

Silver Scooby Sport 30 June 2014 08:59 AM

If your still using the car probably easier to pick another set up then if it takes you a week or two then there is no pressure. Have a search on here there will be info and pictures about showing you before you decide the best direction.

RoyPinhey 30 June 2014 09:43 AM

I'm now on my second set of equal length headers . . First set was toyosports which gave a few problems in terms of fit . . Now have a set I managed to get from rcm (insure of the brand but 100 times better) .

Would be interesting to stick the toyos back on and get it rr'd to see the result . .
