STi R205 rear diffusser FITTING GUIDE
I bought a genuine STi R205 rear defusser from Japan (JapanParts.com) for my STi 330s HATCH (08-10).
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...pses3rkyuf.jpg It came, lovely quality but the instructions were in Japanese with some IKEA style pictures to show you howto fit it. My Japanese is only as good as saying YoSuShe. So I thought I'd do an idiots guide to fitting it to your car. If I can do it anyone can. http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...psye94utl3.jpg Just make sure you have some WD40 and a socket set. ;) In the fixing kit you get a LEFT + RIGHT hand side bracket 4x M10 Nuts - (use these to replace the original Nut already on the car) 1x 'O' ring washer - (don't for get to fit this!!) 4x Black Bolts - (used to fit the R205 spoiler to the new brackets you'll be fitting) 6x Black Nuts - as above 10x Black washers - as above #1 Rear Bumper removal http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...ps2fiexhgc.jpg GET UNDER THE REAR OF THE CAR AND LOCAL ALL THE PRESS CLIP STUDS - pop out the centre with a flat blade screw driver, then ease teh whole clip out the hole. http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...ps8429a586.jpg The rear wheel arch has small holding clips, press the centre part way through then, ease the clip out.If you have mud flaps fitted like I have you may have other clips holding them on, ifthey need to come off, remove at this stage. http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...ps29db2b27.jpg Once all the clips are out, carefully pull the bumper from the rear wheel arch, one side at a time, then pull the whole bumper away from the centre clips that hold the middle in place (with two people it's a bit easier). http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...psntxkzf3a.jpg RED dots are where the centre/middle of the bumper clips in place. http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...ps4de22ee0.jpg #2 Removal of the centre support bar. Use your socket set to remove the THREE M10 nuts - on both sides. http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...psf159676a.jpg http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...psmoqtr0g3.jpg Centre bar now removed. http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...psoalca1nj.jpg In the bag of Nuts & Washers, there is one Larger 'O' ring washer. This goes on the bottom bolt on the left hand side (as you look from the rear of the car). This goes on before you fit the LEFT SIDE R205 Black Bracket. http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...pse892a692.jpg Fit the LEFT bracket and use TWO of the new M10 NUTS that come in fitting kit. http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...psud1l7sph.jpg Then fit the right hand side bracket. http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...pswnp4ymko.jpg TIP: before fitting the M10 NUTS, line up the holes (one on the new black bracked and the other hole of the aluminium bumper support) using one of the Black Plastic fitting Clips, that you removed when removing the bumper. (I've circled it in RED). Don't press it in to fit it just yet! When you're happy they line up, you can tighten the M10 NUTS. Again use TWO of the new M10 NUTS to bolt the Black Bracket on. The original M10 NUTS can go back as before. http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...ps6c9b7d4c.jpg #3 Re Fit the rear bumper. I found it easier to re fit the bumper by removing the side rear light clusters, as it allowed me to make sure the edge of the bumper had gone back into place. Put back all the black plastic clips you removed in section #1. Once all clips are back in place, go back under the car and have a look where the R205 fixing holes are on the newly fitted BLACK Brackets. http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...psbzxxp78o.jpg http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...psouuqoxy2.jpg #4 Fitting of the R205 spoiler Here comes the easy bit. When you're ready, offer up the New R205 rear spolier and have ready the smaller Black Nut/Bolt + Washers that come in the fitting kit. You'll need to use 2 Nut/Bolts + 4 Washers per Bracket (use one washer either side of the hole on the New Black R205 bracket, comman sense come in on this. Once you've fixed all 4 Nut/Bolts/washers.... you will now find you only have Two of the smaller Black Nuts + two Washers left. These are used to secure the ends of the R205 spolier (you will have noticed the R205 spoiler has bolts pre fixed at the ends. These go into holes already in the lower part of the rear bumper. So make sure the bolt lines up and goes into the hole. Put a washer on it and tighten up the Black Nut. DONE.. dead easy ;) http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...psddndspv9.jpg http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...ps1p1dcfic.jpg http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6...psue4tztuc.jpg You can fit the R205 spoiler with the Silver Exhaust Trims. I hope this helps people in the future, if they want to fit a R205 rear defusser like I have. |
Not feeling so special now Rob and Phil have followed suit with the rear under diffuser!
Would suggest anyone with a hatch goes and gets one of these fitted to their car. Makes it look so much better! |
The only thing is Rich, we never did a fitting guide to make it look easy, So most folk wouldn't bother buying them. STI are Discontinuing them them anyhow from what I gather.
|
Subaru UK said they were discontinued, according to Subaru Nottm.. hence Rob having the last of the UK stock from them. That's why I went to Japan and had to wait 30 days as they were on back order from STi.
Bumper had to come off though.. it's a scarey feeling pulling it off the snap/poppers :/ |
Amazing work, completely changes the rear look of the car.

Nice! Doubt it'll feel any different from day to day driving? I think it might only feel different at pretty high speed.
|
I drove do to the curry house last night at the bottom of the road and I swear the car felt so much more planted on the rear :)

Sounds like some proper engineering when into designing that diffuser. :thumb: |
oh it must be.
I was only doing about 30mph.. but I swear I could tell a difference :) |
how my car looks now...
|
Thanks Phil, very helpful.

Looks awesome Phil, could you post up a pic of the whole of the back of the car with it fitted? Still trying to decide if I want one :thumb:

so......
Finally purchased the R205 diffuser & spent a 1/2 a day fitting it. salsa-king's thread with photo's made fitting it a doddle. However, with the fitting instructions I received, the LH bracket goes on top of the crash bar, but the RHl bracket goes under it - still had to remove the crash bar to fit the RH bracket. Just waiting on Subaru to order me some new clips to hold the bumper on. Not something my local Subaru dealer keeps in stock. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...5e1fd98463.jpg Also recently brought a waist spoiler & had that fitted, not that you can really tell from a straight on rear view :lol1: |
Where did you end up getting it from. Bet they're expensive now.
Yep.... That bar needs to come off to fit it correctly. Can't do it without taking it off. |

Yep.... That bar needs to come off to fit it correctly. Can't do it without taking it off. Deffuser came from japanparts Waist spoiler, of all places, Ali Express. Took a chance & body shop took it to said it was pretty decent moulding, & it fitted well. Something I wanted for my 2.0RX, but couldn't justify Subaru pricing at time. |
I was just thinking that I didn't have that problem when fitting, but then I remembered that I took off the bumper at the time, and there was no crash bar.
I'm still trying to establish if spec C hatches were built without them |

As mentioned in my R205 defuser fitted post, picture of waist spoiler fitted. I would say I'm 80% happy with it. Let down a bit on fitting as was expecting it to be bonded using a paste type glue, but they used double sided 3m tape, so it doesn't fit as flush as I had hoped.
