I am presently trying to sell my car

What do I have to do to keep my personal plate? Do I have to re-register the car with the old plate before it is sold or can this be done when it is actually sold?

Thanks

You can have the registration number put on a retention certificate.
This costs £125 and includes the transfer onto your next vehicle.
The certificate has to be renewed every year if the number is not put on a vehicle.
IIRC, you just need to take your V5 and tax disk to your local DVLA and they usually offer an over the counter service.
Bare in mind if you're selling your car, it'll take up to 3 weeks to get a new V5 from Swansea and no-ones gonna buy your motor without it.

Thanks SDB

Will I have to pay for the car to have a new registration no. as well as the £125 to put the personal one on retention?

Its a few years since I did this last (Had A 4WD R to sell) but I'm sure the fee now gives you back your 'original' number rather than one 'of the same age' included in the price.

Hi,

correct, the £125 fee is to put your plate on retention for a year and re-issue the cars original plate.

If you go to one of the DVLA offices with your paper work, all bar the V5 can be done over the counter. I just did this in Feb 2002, and they told me the V5 would take 3 months however, it took 4 days :D

If you are selling private, you really ought to get this sorted before selling, if you are doing a part ex, the dealer should be fine knowing that you are in the process of transferring. They have been for my last two cars !!
