lateral mdxt to sc40

Hi folks had a new mdxt fitted last sept on my 2005sti and I'm not happy with the spool etc on a 2 litre. I'm thinking of selling it and get a sc40. Will it be worth it?? Will I see a lot more spool?

If you just want spool go for a 38.

MrNoisy 27 May 2014 01:41 PM

Same car as me :).
Didn't you already ask this question a few months ago? Or did you ask about the SC42 then?
There really won't be much in it I suspect.
If you're that bothered about spool I'd say if you're on a FMIC, either go rotated, or shorten your fmic pipework (or go back to TMIC).
If you're still on TMIC there ain't much you can do really except go smaller turbo or change the engine for a 2.1, 2.35 or (less bulletproof) 2.5.

If you want to see the SC42 on a 2.0 UK widetrack STI here you go (this was on a reasonably warm day, vpower only).
For full spec see my garage

Yeah I did mate.
But now I'm thinking sc40 or maybe 38 I want full spool by 4 know if that's poss?
I did want forged 2.5 dropping in but don't think I can afford it.
All I want is a fast point to point car

I easily have full spool by 4, the dyno will often read different depending on conditions on the day, I've seen it earlier on some days.

Do you mean full spool or max torque?

Incidentally I've got a mate with a forged 2.5 and a billet MD555 and our cars are pretty evenly matched which I think says a lot about the abilities of this turbo and the standard 2.0!

Basically I'm after a torquey car with good spool.
Something where u press the pedal it goes instead of wait wait go!

toyney83 29 May 2014 10:18 PM

Had mine mapped at sc the other week. You know the spec. Had a 4bar map sensor fitted and the boost upped to 1.9b. Car only made 385 bhp but torque wasn't fat behind at 370lbs. Anyway pat said it was like the car was getting choked up so after discussing possible causes I stripped the turbo off and it's been sent down to turbo dynamics. Anyway the turbos dead lol so having a chra with 71mm billet wheel and the turbo should come back like new. I'd expect to see 450+ with torque not far behind and slightly earlier spool... I'm already at full boost before 4k rpm. Have you checked over the rest of the car as there may be another underlying issue?

craigyp 30 May 2014 06:43 AM

Cheers toyney83. Your right the problem could possibly be something else as the turbo was fresh back from td last year fully rebuilt...
Any ideas which could cause such problems?

toyney83 30 May 2014 06:58 AM

What air filter do you run and what exhaust system?

craigyp 30 May 2014 10:40 AM

Perrin inlet with a ks tech trumpet.japspeed down pipe 3" and a one piece system from big fud that he had on his 600hp wr1

you want a 2.5 it then mate, 2.0 is alway gonna be behind a 2.5 in terms of lag when you compare like for like mods.

I'm running SC40 and made 445, great turbo. Once meth map was done 472 could've done slightly more but cam sensor gave up. Hope this helps your decision.

You could put your turbo on my car and it would produce 466hp/490llbsft with full boost at 3700rpm, different set up but same turbo.
A smaller turbo gives you quicker spool and more torque but ultimately the car wont be as quick.
If you're still running the oem dump valve it may be worth checking it out, they can bleed boost which would lead to underperformance.

Hi Craig,
I think if you still aren't happy with it then starting again is the best idea, all these turbos you mention won't necessarily give what you want. As already mentioned a smaller turbo may give better spool but at the cost of top end power which will make the car feel slower.
Although our cars have similar spec mine feels much quicker than yours, but I put that down to mine being a classic & much lighter however your AVCS should have an advantage over my V3 ones, is the AVCS working?
I remember when you posted your last RR figures & it was well down on power, did SC have any input on why. Perhaps if you can get your current set up working properly you'd be happy with it. If that's not an option now then a well built forged 2.5 will give what you are after & your MDX should be a good turbo for that set up.
