Any sparkys out ther help me out ??

I am replacing 2 extractor fans in my bathrooms. One was a straight swap - simple on/off fan with a +ve and -ve connection in it. The other old knackered unit is one with a timer on it, and the new replacement is again an on/off device.

The old one has a +ve, -ve and earth connections, with all 3 wires connected whereas the new fan only has +ve and -ve connections. It says on the instructions that there is a piece of choccy block with a 3rd spare connection in the new one, but the choccy block actually only has 2 pieces.

My question is, can i put a 3 piece choccy block in and connect the earth to the spare ?? Am i right in thinking the earth was necessary for the old "timer" fan.

Cheers

Dave

It probably doesnt require one, this is normal nowadays.... you can do a few things.. bend the wire back and wrap it around the grey insulation (so it is there if ever required..Probably best to put sleeving around it though). You could Cut it off.. Or change the connector block..... I would go for the last option... Ones with a timer normally have four wires anyway...

L - Live
N - Neutral
E - Earth
SL - Switched Live (Comes from light, turns fan on, timer then starts counting down after this supply is removed)

Hope this Helps.

David
