Simtek/Alcatek "dongle not present"

Hey all,

I'm having trouble connecting my ECU with my PC. I've downloaded and installed the GIN file from Simtek's website. When I try to connect, Simtek Tuner (and GEMS' GWv4) tells me "dongle is not present".

Do I have to have the dongle that Simtek supplies or can I piece together my own serial-to-USB dongle?

Hi - first of all I see some confusion here.

Which ecu we're actually talking about?
Alcatek or Simtek - they're not the same thing now.

If you have Alcatek - Simtek's webpage is not the right place to look for anything.

However - in both cases - your message refers to DESkey decrypting usb device, which is required in both cases to run the mapping software.
Such a security policy and solution chosen for both ecus by their producers.

Thanks for the reply Ami. I have an Alcatek ECU but was sold to me as a Simtek. I think that's where my confusion originated.

It appears I've been reading old information from past threads. The history and evolution of this ECU is somewhat confusing. You and the JGM have brought to my attention that a generic dongle is not adequate. I was, for some reason, under the impression that Simtek Tuner or GEMS GWv4 could tune this ECU. Is this incorrect as well?

I'm beginning to think selling my Apexi PFC was a mistake.

Thats not correct, the gems based ecu called Simtek uses a completely different dongle and has to be purchased. The AlcaTek ecu can be used with customer software on request but again has to be purchased together with dongle and cable.

The confusion arises due to the name "Simtek" being a brand name only for Simpson Motorsport. They originally bought and badged Alcatek ecu's as Simtek, but latterly changed horses and the bought and badged Gems ecu's as Simtek, hence the confusion, its clear which is which by the identification information on the actual pcb. If you need the customer software for the Alcatek ecu then provide the ecu serial number which would be E1S??.???? together with the requisite amount of money and that is available. Its best to go through an AlcaTek dealer though as Alcatek are not really set up to deal with individuals thats why they have a dealer network. email me the info on rbr@brdevelopments.com if you like and I will see what can be done to help.

cheers

bob

Don't hold your breath though. I never got my software.
