New Member - Impreza Sport

Hi All.

New member and new owner. I have however owned a Legacy estate in the past and my last job in the motor trade (20 years ago) was as a technician at Gordons S.I (Subaru and Isuzu dealer in Bolton). Long gone now.

I love the cars and always had a passion for the Turbo which I PDI'd and serviced back in 93/94.

Looking for a cheap Turbo at 40 years old was no mean feat. Mainly because the ones in my price range were all modified dogs which had been thrashed within an inch of their lives.

I have bought a one owner, pristine Sport which is really nice and although it has nowhere near the grunt, gets lots of attention and is a good base to start with.

I am going to lower it in the next few weeks and look at altering the exhaust. A kind member on here (riiidaa) has mentioned a Borla Replica and a box. I have already sourced the down pipe but am wondering what box to go for?

I worked on standard models when new - modding is not my thing. Will the original exhaust fit the pipes and can I fit a new aftermarket box straight on?

Your thoughts and assistance would be appreciated.

Apologies if my question is in the wrong section. Any polite advice is much obliged!

Thanks, John. :Whatever_

Get a STi or Prodrive style backbox as they are not too loud and don't lose back pressure. My car came with the Afterburner Vortex and sounds great but you will lose back pressure and responsiveness with this large jap style backbox as well as using more fuel. The 4.5" or 5" jap boxes are great for the Turbo cars but for a non-turbo you will actually lose power in my opinion.

will send over some advice a bit later, too busy celebrating my birthday :)

why are you worried about back pressure on a non turbo?

Hi. I've seen this car around local to me. An elderly fella owned it.

scooberuni 04 April 2014 04:14 PM

I know its a sport, thats why I answered the thread, becasue he has a Sport and I've owned 3 of them before. What do you mean a 4.5" or 5" exhaust won't fit? I'm talking exit diameter not pipe diameter.

Welcome to Scoobynet mate from another north-west member :thumb:

Those UEL headers look a safe bet and local too! :)

You can have a bit of fun in a sport. I have owned two . Last one needed some work doing to it.

All explained here

https://www.scoobynet.com/projects-4...rt-tweaks.html

Regarding the exhaust. You don't need to go the whole hog that I did in the cobra system and Borla Headers but you must be aware that the size and fittings are different from sport to turbo on classics. I should know because when I sold my sport for another turbo I was going to swap the system over but realised I could not :(

Anyway most turbo stuff does fit just not certain items.

Have fun :thumb:

welcome to scoobynet from a fellow sport owner. great motors, cant fault them in any way. mine has been fun and reliable since the day i owned it and in regards to a prevous reply i can vouch for a prodrive end can as it does keep you back pressure up nicely.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I will keep everyone posted and will most probably create a new thread with the odd picture or two.

Tony. When you say that most things will interchange, is there anything I need to watch if I buy Borla headers. I am looking to buy the ones on eBay at the minute but don't want to be spending money on a complete new exhaust system. I was hoping that my pipe would fit to the new headers and then just source a back box?

Thanks, John.

as long as the advert says 2.0 non turbo, sport, or GL impreza, you'll be fine. :thumb:

just get headers and a suitable backbox, that's what i did to get the 'burble', (i also bought a deresinated centre section - but to this day it's sat in my bedroom) www.imprezarally.com

Thanks alot.

I will keep the questions coming.

I am beginning to like this site and I like the 'attitude' of the members on it (if you know what I mean). Ive been on many forums over the years (other cars - not Subaru) and either people get the mickey taken or ridiculed. If members are polite, you end up speaking to people who really haven't got a clue at all. Try the Volvo forums for my V50!

:brickwall

Nice to see so many like minded knowledgeable people.

Thanks once again, John.

;)
