Oil filter too big
 

Hi all,

I've a WRX 9 (Hawkeye) 2.5l and took it to a Subaru "Specialist" for a plug and oil change (didn't fancy having a go 1st time at the plugs myself) a couple of weeks back.

Not used the car much since then and the other day whilst giving her a quick clean I checked the fluid levels and found a dry dipstick (she's never used much oil before) so popped so more in and rechecked, dipstick still dry but oil dripping from underneath.

I've jacked the car up and removed the under-tray and the oil was coming from the top of the filter. Pain in the whatsit to get off and had to use the filter tool all the way as it was rubbing the pipe the next to it.

Searched on here and google and ordered a K&N filter which arrived today (still waiting for the "specialist" to send me a new/correct filter and oil).

It seems that the one which was leaking (Bosch) is way too big and won't seat correctly due to the pipe at the side. The new K&N one is considerably smaller.

The garage/specialist says that there's a difference between the 2.0l and 2.5l but I can only find "classic" and "newage" filters.

Not happy with the "specialists" for this and the muppetts wanted me to drive it back to them to check - I politely told them where to go as with no oil in it the car was going nowhere.

Note: when I took the filter off the only oil left in it was the oil in the filter itself :(

Is there a difference between 2.0l and 2.5l or only classic and Newage and is the K&N one (ref: HP-1008) good to use as I don't trust anything that comes from these guys any more?

Yes that is correct, you cannot run the earlier larger oil filter on the 2.5l due to fitment issues - well so i found (& so have you!)

that K&N one is fine to use, its what i use.

just hope you havent suffered any engine damage

Thank you - so it's a 2.0l and 2.5l thing rather than classic and newage the difference?

The car was only really driven back from the "specialists" and not really used much since then - time will tell I guess, and if it blows I'll sue them for a nice forged rebuild.

Surprised that I didn't get an oil warning light or EML when I backed it out of the garage to clean it?

Which specialist and where are you based, be helpful to know who to avoid. I do my own servicing but for other things I don't want to end up with these retards.

Don't worry Oranges they're based in France so doubt you'll bump into them. Shame really as they have a very good reputation but I guess they're more specialised in the 2.0l models - I've not seen many 2.5l models around this area either.

If you had a newage Jdm Sti 2.0 litre with equal length headers you would have no chance getting the filter on the left on .There not a lot of room with the Subaru oil filter ie the black one is what I use on the Jdm Sti regards tightening up by hand

You'd think a specialist would have done a better job and be aware of the differences, doh!

Have you asked them about rebuilding the thing if it let's go?
Not saying it will, but driving it with no oil isn't going to do anything good. ( I know you weren't aware if the oil thing at the time buddy)

Not yet - I will be talking to them about this though.

Luckily looking at the oil on my garage floor it seems to have lost most of it whilst sitting or at least it still had a fair bit in it when it went into my garage - I know that backing it out with not a lot in it has not done it much good but it was literally only for about 10secs max and there was no dodgy noises and I never rev it until it's hot anyway, fingers crossed that it's OK. I'll know more once I get the new oil in and filter on and go for a drive.
