I noticed loads of postings on a previous thread about Ocatvia RS's so I thout here would be a top place to start looking for some advice...
I've owned my Octavia 1.8T 20v for 12 months and its not missed a beat - I done 50,000 miles in it since then, and intend to carry on doing about 1000 miles per week.
I did have free servicing upto 45,000 miles but now I have passed that I'm serioulsy considering chipping it, I was thinking either superchips or www.auto-amd.com.
My main worry is that I need to keep the car reliable. I'd be intrested to hear from anyone who's thought about or done the same to the 1.8T with regards to performance, reliability, and anything else that you may think be worth while knowing before I spend my cash
Cheers Stu

Lots of information at www.vwvortex.com

Yup, get over to:

and have a read through, there are plenty of opinions on tuners.

I run a non-RS 1.8T and plan to have it chipped by Jabbasport, just need to scrape a few pennies together.

Try upsolute, they're a well known VAG engine tuner, looked at their stuff for the Seat Leon TDI I am in the process of buying.

AMD (Auto AMD) are superbly experienced Audi VW tuners. Not wishing to compare tuners, but I know of several owners who went to Superchips and then went to AMD for a remap (for whatever reason).

You should see 190-195bhp from the 150bhp Octavia if you do some minor peripheral mods. An uprated alloy dump valve is popular.

Personally, in my opinion, alledgedly, I wouldn't touch Upsolute with a barge pole for an Octavia, again. I did it and was not happy at all. I think it was the boost peaking at 25PSI, on a turbo rated for 15. The nice detting noise did not fill me with much confidence either.

I have opinions on most of the VAG tuners, with regard to Octavias, but as I say they are MY opinions and may not be shared by others.

4x4, someone mentioned to me that the superchips mod was not that great especially if you were after reliability as well as performance, also I noticed that the AMD mod seems on paper to give more bhp / torque for about the same money as superchips - they seem to be looking favorite at the moment then if I go for it.

TaviaRS 30 May 2002 01:56 PM

Each to their own.

I have a Superchip in mine and I am happy. All the conversions give you roughly (ie within a couple of BHP and lb/ft) the same power. Anyone claiming big increases is pushing the limits and reliability may suffer. I had lots of confidence in the guy who did mine. For the record mine has 228bhp and 242lb/ft. I know of some who have spent considerably more and have 2bhp more and 9lb/ft extra. Oh, and mine is fully warrantied.

TaviaRS,
Have you had any other mods done to your RS or was it just the chip?

TaviaRS 30 May 2002 06:21 PM

An exhaust.

I came back to an Impreza (again!) after having a couple of Audis and chipping both.

My views come from speaking with owners at club meets etc and a similar forum to this one.

For the 150T version (as opposed to the 180 RS) I met a chap who removed the Superchips version because of high rev boost problems which they couldn't sort.

I've not heard anything similar about AmD conversions.

Another alternative is to speak with RSD who fitted an Oettinger chip to my A4 Quattro. Oettinger.de website is in English which might interest you.

Mornin' Skip,

Yep, all sorted! They ended up taking the whole thing off and re-fitting it, with some minor mods. Mind you it'll probably vibrate off once I've fitted the grp N powerflex bushes! At least this time I hame some metal cable ties, just in case!

Still got a bottle sitting here for you, assuming you don't mind single malts.

Jon
