JonMc's Winter 2013/14/15/16 Re-work
Having has the car for some time I've finally decided to give it the engine mods that'll make it go like it should.
Currently running about 270bhp on the standard TD04 with an FB Tuning map I've been accumulating part for some time and have finally got off my arse and started, but not all smooth flowing:eek: The jobs to be done:
So job 1, remove the autogauges to allow me to fit the PSI3 into a top pod and replace them with a Depo 4-in-1 boost gauge fitted near the driver's sider A-pillar. So start with removing all the old stuff. Boost gauge hose easy, and replace the old purple stuff with red so the start of the hose swap done too. Boost gauge sender sorted, move to the oil pressure - already had the LMA t-piece so sorted quite easily and used an onld bike light bracket to mount the t-piece better:D Final bit if the oil temp gauge, using the cylinder 3 blank it can be fiddley but having removed the FMIC pipes it seems simple until I remove the adpator and out with it comes a load of threads stripped from the block:eek: I cleaned it all up and removed all of the swarfe (I hope) and refitted it with a load of PTFE tape but it leaked. Tried a new crush washer but that meant the adaptor didn't grab enough thread and it just span on the bits that had already stripped:cry: Last ditch effort, triple bond, got the adaptor to fit and tighten (without the sender fitted) and then fitted the sender. The residual heat from the previous run that had leaked must have helped the triple bond set as once I fitted the sender and re-assembled the car it seems oil-tight. Car is SORN'd so I couldn't take it out for a run, but some good throttle blips and there was no more leak;) When I strip out the manifold I think I'll seal it on with some chemical metal just to be sure:wonder: The result, old gauged out and wiring for the new senders in place, but it went dark and the gauge isn't fitted. A little annoyed as I did the same gauge from scratch including fitting the LMA and removing a TMIC in 2.5 hours so half a job in 3.5 hours, despite the cold, is a little frustrating:mad: Anyway, pics and more to follow over the next few weeks, but in the mean time I have a full set of Autogauges 52mm boost, oil temp and pressures gauges including vacuum hose, wiring and all the senders for sale. Will also have an A-pillar pod available soon. |
Sounding like a good start mate.
How much you after for the old gauges and senders? |
Twas a great start:eek:
Haven't thought much about the old set-up yet, was going to look at advertising them tonight and coming up with a price then:wonder: |
Good stuff mate :) For once my car didn't do a cross thread but yours!! It could also be that as I was wasn't there this time round, it took an extra couple of hours than mine did last week!! lol

Done a bit more today, but never have I had so much drama fitting gauges:eek:
Ran all the wiring only for it to be about 2-3cm too short, sorted that by tweaking the routing, then plugged it all up and nothing:wonder: The accessory live wire had pulled out of the crimp - sorted that and hey presto, life:D http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...pscbd49117.jpg Initially, it only read 12v, and so did my PSI3 and alternator tester so I thought my alternator was fcuked - turns out if your speedo is unplugged the reading's false so plugged my new speedo in and all good. Water temp gauge is knackered so I need to swap that from my old gauges, need to remove the bulb for the seat belt warning as my old set never had that and fit the extra earth for the handbrake light. Also, the ABS light doesn't come on now as I've de-soldered and removed the bulb - I have no ABS. Just going to by an pillar pod to tidy it up:D Also checked the cylinder 3 bung and that has stayed dry:thumb: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...ps722272a1.jpg Boost sensor fitted along side the 3-port, just need to swap the blue hoses for the red ones I have in the garage... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...pse4901ffc.jpg Finally, space now where the old gauges used to be now clear for the PSI3 in my top pod, just need to get some plasti-dip to paint it up first:norty: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...ps28cbb0d9.jpg Will finish it next weekend hopefully, then need to sort an MOT so I can tax it at the end of Feb and start playing again:D:D:D |
Looking good Jon:thumb:

Cheers Ry:thumb:
Also getting all of the bits together to do the battery relocation, found that it's cheaper to by an amp wiring kit and throw some stuff away that to try and by the wire and stuff separately  Final decision for now - do I get forester style pocket for the hole left by the PSI3 or just fit one of these... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1606623568...84.m1423.l2649 :wonder: |
Yeah I've been looking at wiring for my battery and it's not cheap!!
I'd get a forester pocket tbho Jon:) |
Forester style pocket is quite pricey, I went for that ebay one on mine.

Nice progress Jon, I would go for a Forester pocket and plasti dip it :thumb:
|
I might end up with a pocket for now anyway - can't find a forester pocket anywhere expect the states $21 plus $55 for shipping and the VAT and duty on top:eek:
|
Wow that's ridiculous money. Have you tried scoobyspares for the pocket?
|
Got hold of a twin 60mm A-pillar pod which I have monumentally modded and I now have a fitted and working gauge. Including modding the A-pillar about an hours work all in:D

Looks nice mate, what are the two wires going behind the gauge? Sender cables? :wonder:
|
Yes mate, sender cables before I fed them back under the dash and tied them up:thumb:
|
Certainly looks like the hassle was worth it. Looking forward to your next mod update.
