Civic Type R (FN2) ?
Anyone know much about te civic type R FN2?
Seems they can be bagged fairly cheap these days. Any issues/reliable/recalls or general buying advice and weaknesses? Ta |
Yep. had one for a short while. make sure the steering rack is ok. service history is key. any accident damage on the cheaper ones with odds on theyve seen the wrong side of the hedge. Make sure once warm vtec engauges properly and be prepared to change the front tyres as they tend to wear the edges.

Ok cool. Its between this and a cheaper 5k ish cooper S
Reliability is a major requirement. So im after comparing the reliability qualities of both. the cooper S seems to have potentially a lot of issues. |
I've driven both and once you get up in the revs the type r was much more fun and composed. alot more agile than the cooper s. also its honda. reliability is second to none.
|
Good news. What kinda MPG do they run at. My mate with an EP3 rekoned it was ok at about 30mpg. Good for a couple hundred k?
Any weakpoints after 5 years old now? |
I ran one for 3 years and sold it this time last year.
Great cars, bombproof and cheap to maintain. Interior is a bit low rent but really who cares. Sold mine with 80K on the clock and had no problems with it. People say they are gutless etc. but I think they just need to learn to drive them, you have to rev them, really rev them, to get the performance, but once you do that they are pretty nippy and handle very well. Traction is an issue off the line in the wet but that is FWD for you. Put simply they are a lot of fun. Driven sensibly you will see early 30s mpg so that is a bonus too! Try and get one that hasn't been f**ked about with as very few mods make the car better, Honda did a very good jib themselves in the first place. |
DC5 instead? Better looking imho + has the fancy diff.
TX. |
not for me and the car wont be driven hard.
Thanks for the good news. My mates EP3 and EG seemed pretty quick. Quick enough anyway. The interior looks aweomse? Im surprised to hear it described as low rent. Ive not seen one in person yet. Can you expand on it? |

Some earlier FN2's came with rust at the top of the doors from new. Information can be found on CTRO and TRO forums.

Better off with the cooper s then, you won't make any progress unless you rev the tits off it!

lol yes i imagine tha tis how the type R is going to get treated.
I shall arrange a testdrive of both and see how they stack up. Anything else i should know about them? or the cooper s? |
Also anyone got experiance with the 197. Originally discounted it as ive had very bad experiances with french build quality. Have they improved at all for the 197? A car with constant niggles which although might not be total failure could stop you using the car is unacceptable.

I know martinsti has had one from new, don't think he comes in here but would be worth sending a pm to him :thumb:
|
shall i start Another Thread? lol. i think its coming down to CS, CTR and 197 of the hot hatch selection. All seem to be sub 7k

thats the point of the engine , at low Rpm you have decentish MPG and such and then at high revs you hit the fun cams :D i loved the engine and gearbox on my old EP3's yes the wets a bit tricky but just dont drive like a fool and jobs a goodun :) the Mini's are abit chick for me, they even have a switch to change interior light colours heh I didnt really get a go in the Clios, due to the dealership being complete snobs and not letting me anywhere near one.... when i did poke at one the front light washer nearly snapped off heh for your choices, i myself, would go for another Civic :) possibly the older EP3 shape to the newer FN2 myself |
Seems the Clio has a few issues. Type R certainly comes up cleanest on internet searches.
Some very positive reviews infact. Especially for long time runner. |
I'd be looking at low mileage CTR EP3 (Final edition) models with the Recaro seats. Prices on those seem to be firming up since the EP3 has a better reputation as a drivers car than the FN2.
You've only got to look at the number of FN2's for sale and how much they have dropped to get an idea of the depreciation landslide :Suspiciou Honda have totally lost the plot when it comes to sportier models on their new range and this can only make the more original type-r models more sought after (pre FN2) going forwards. |
Whats the current market like for the Fn2's? Are they selling?
How much would we expect a 39k 07 to be going for? |

More to do with the grade of plastics used than anything. Just feels a bit cheap to me in places, but nowehere near as bad as the previous model.

Test drove one and thought the dash quality was fine. No bmw but good enough, and the dash was cool.
Visibility was no real issue and no head baning issues (6'1) know info about recalls, or reliability issues. Any gearbox problems? |
I have a Premier Edition EP3 for a runabout and I love it!
Here's a buying guide for the FN2 http://www.civictype-r.co.uk/forum/v...?f=90&t=185051 |
I had one before my Hawk, and to be honest I miss it.
Look for one with the Sat Nav and HFT, I waited to find one with this and was glad I did. Awesome car, perfect weight steering, didn't have one issue. Main dealer servicing at Honda is reasonably priced too. Don't go for a MINI, you will regret it! (in comparison to the Honda) |
yeah mini is out of the window. Might have a type r lined up for the weekend. We shall see.
Good thread that one. thanks. |
How did you get on?
Slightly off topic but what car would offer best performance? a 2.0 VTEC - 200bhp, 145 lbs/ft or a 2.0 Turbo - 190bhp, 205 lbs/ft? |
Do youself a favour and buy a ek9 type r:D
|
She went for an FN2 type R. Virtually new. Picked it up on the weekend and its excellent motor!

My understanding which I am more than happy to be corrected with is that 90% of the time the 190bhp Turbo would be the better performer but in race mode when wound up fully then the 200bhp would ultimately be the quicker car (all things equal).
