STI IV buying help needed
Thinking of getting an STI, well this STI Type IV actually.
Does it all sound ok and look right? I’m no expert on these and would value some input. http://images.pistonheads.com/aimg/925/925879-2.jpg http://images.pistonheads.com/aimg/925/925879-3.jpg http://images.pistonheads.com/aimg/925/925879-4.jpg http://images.pistonheads.com/aimg/925/925879-1.jpg

Looks good, just take someone along who knows about scooby engines as the last thing you want is an engine rebuild 2 days after you buy it.

I'm not a novice to engines, but far from an expert :norty: |
are you sure its a V4? I was under the impression that V3s were on a P plate and V4 on an R. If it has the early dash its a v3 if it has the centre top box then its a 4

Ask the seller for the applied model code as i've just picked up a V4 Type R and that's on a 98 plate
Few piccies of it (ignore the spoiler as that isn't the standard one) https://www.scoobynet.com/members-ga...-v-new-er.html The 7 digit "applied model" code found on the vehicle identification plate inside the engine bay is decoded in the following way. 1.Series code G=Impreza S=Forester B=Legacy etc. 2.Body type F=Wagon C=Sedan 3.Engine type 8=2.0L Turbo 4.Year code A=MY93 B=MY94 C=MY95&96 D=MY97 (facelift) E=MY98 F=MY99 G=MY00 5.Number of doors 2=2 door coupe 4=4 door saloon 5=5 door wagon/hatch 6.Model type 8=WRX 7=RA type E=Sti D=Sti Type R & RA 7.Transmission D=5 Speed Manual AWD P=4 Speed Automatic AWD |

worthing bearing in mind as well depending on what you are looking to do in the future but the v3/4 97/98 cars cannot be remapped.
|
not on the standard ecu anyway ;)

Could any of the classic Impreza's be mapped and how cheap/easy is the solution? Cheers. |
sorry was'nt trying to put you off, it's not a major issue you can buy an aftermarket ecu and the worlds your oyster, i have a simtek in my v4 my98.
the earlier v1&2 can be mapped via a esl board and the newer v5&6 cars have a mappable ecu. just wanted to make you aware incase you where thinking of changing turbo's and injectors etc as the ecu will be an extra cost on top. as for the mods already i'm not really sure, someone in here will advise you on that or give a call to one of the mappers sure they would give you some advice. hope it helps you. |
Check the boot out, ensure the floor isnt creased/damaged, may be me but that bumper isnt sitting right on the rear.

No probably wouldn't be looking at modding any further. I'd probably be happy with a standard one and a nice exhaust tbh, but this caught my eye and is fairly local. |
The car looks to be a v4 as it has the correct steering wheel and facelift door cards, think someone stuck it on a P plate to avoid the E-SVA as there was no model report.
Banny |
Thanks.
I've done an online car check and it reports back ok and year of manufacture to be 1997. |
As long as it's not had a shunt & the engine isn't rattling it is a cheap sti.

I've got a V3 STI in white with a Version 5/6 Facelift bumper and Foglight Covers and the same rear spoiler.
Recently had new spark plugs, Silkolene Pro S oil change along with Filter, 6 months TAX, 10 months MOT. HKS Exhaust, Coilovers on the front (quite a harsh ride) I'd probably change them back to STI standard suspension. 22B Lookalike BBS Forged Alloys, Apexi Adjustable BOV. I haven't got a Pic of it with the new front end at the moment. But it does help it out a lot compared to normal v3/v4 bumpers. http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...IMAG0043-2.jpg I think I'd be looking for about the same money as the other fella. Drop me a PM if your interested. |
Ok a couple of things instantly spring to mind and suprised nobody has mentioned them.
He is running standard engine managment meaning the car is mapped for Japanese fuel. I cannot recall the octane rating from the top of my head but its considerably higher then anything with have here iirc. On this basis alone the seller should have been running the car on vpower + octane booster over the last 2 years that the car has been in this country imo of course. Next point of concern is the decat pipe. Without at least a boost controller there is a high chance of boost creep occuring on that engine also. Id like to make an assumption that the owner was more concerned with fitting his shiny HKS blow off valve and possibly unecessary turbo timer (debatable) then he was with modding the car properly. Possibly he has got away with it by not using the car much but Id actually put money down that the car in question has already been marked for death via det by the grim reaper. Just trying to put a different slant on things. My first scooby was a V4 STi which was nearly standard. I ran it on optimax and booster and the engine still suffered from Det and holed a piston. |

I think I've read a few times from different sites that the high ron fuel wasn't introduced to Japan until about 99 which means a v4 will be fine with 99 Ron VPower Next point of concern is the decat pipe. 300, you not buying an American car? :D

There must be a few Impreza's of this age on here?:confused: |

Does anyone know the fuel requirement for certain for this model year??
There must be a few Impreza's of this age on here?:confused: I think the general consensus on here is that if you must put 95 juice in your car then stay off boost in the high revs as it'll cause more knocking. |
I have an MY98 v4 STi on a 'R' plate and from the last owner (who has owned the car for 2 years) only ran it on Tesco 99 or V-Power with no octane booster also running with de-cat and has never had any problems.
Ive had this car for 3 months and its been perfect :thumb: Also ive owned an Evo 5, i was the first UK owner and i had that for 2 1/2 years and i only ran that on either Tesco99 ot V-Power with no octane booster and that ran like a dream too. Paul. |
KS3 knock sensor, just over 200 quid, better than a 2.5k rebuild ;):D
Tony:) |
Thanks. Not too keen to run an octane booster tbh, that and 99 ron makes for a damn expensive fill up, I suspect boardering on the same running costs as a V12 Jag!
