I acknowledge that scooby is a great car - I'm man enough to admit that my XR2i has been beaten by these and thats a fast car in it's own write.
Now I am looking to upgrade but am not really interested in a Japanese car. European at worst, but preferably British. I won't go into the reason why I want to by a British car, but lets just say that a lot of us have forgoten loyalty to our country. I would like to here suggestions on what can be regarded as true british scooby-beaters - or something that can give scooby a run for its money. In the region of 12-15k. The reason I come here is cos this bored has a reputation for being full of experts and hope to get sensible answers. |
Yeah - right
Let us not get race started on this bbs - OK? Just bog off back to the hole from which you crawled. Either that or your a sad lonely & bored person on a saturday evening nothing better to do wind up  Mods - to the muppet forum please. |

True_Brit,
If you check your video or TV you will probably find that they are japanese. I am extremely loyal to my country (especially the footie team ) but I do know we don't make the best car's in the world. If you have 12-15 grand to spend on a motor and you want plenty of car for you money then you should look no further than a scooby. If you ask on this board which car to buy, then most people will say a scooby (I think). Cheers, Craig. :D |
arent a lot of nissans and hondas built in THIS country, by british workers?????
where are fords built? the pumas built in germany:D buy the car that puts a smile on your face, doesnt really matter what country it comes from:) |
RB370 Pussycat or one of your mates, you are as transparent as glass.

Better yet,
close the whole board! I am not affiliated with R370 in any way |

How do you lot know this is a windup ? does any newbie that asks a question have to get this kind of stuff thrown back at him ? It strikes me that if you wanted a British car (erm, are there any anymore I can't think of a single one ?) comparable to an Impreza than this is a sensible place to ask. I'm sure many of you have looked at all the alternatives to an Impreza and have views on said motors. Gary Ps If you will only buy an English car, how come your driving a Ford ???? Thats an American manufacturer. |
I think there are still quite a lot of 'British manufacturers':-
TVR Aston Martin Catherham Westfield MacLaren and that's just the ones off the top of my head, although some are 'owned' by bigger non UK companys. There's nothing wrong with wanting to own a car designed & built in Britain. You could always build one yourself! |
Actually, I just thought - Rover is English again isn't it ?
So how about one of the new Rover cars ? I drive an English car, a Sylva Fury :) |
That's what I hate about this board......there's so many people that "bite" your head off whenever you say something controversial or something which maybe factually wrong.
OK some people don't know as much as you and some people are asking questions they want answered without someone slating them. There's a lot of snobbery on this board. And we Brits make a lot of world class cars even if they may not be in the Impreza price bracket. MG are no way near as good as Subaru(Impreza anyway) but they are on the way up and they are worth a look. I sorry if I sound rude but some people really do annoy me! |
The new MG's really do look very nice, IMO
|
No, what we replied about was the "assumption" that those who drive a non english/UK car arent loyal to their country.

Stretch to an extra grand and get a Honda Civic Type R.

*true* _brit has written his/her/its post in the classic wind-up style
"not being controversial but the subaru is a great car & scoobynet are all informed intelligent people" like. true_bigot is either a wind-up merchant or a sick indevidual. I hope he is a wind-up merchant... |
You lot love it!
I'm fairly new to this, but it's obvious that some of you thrive on this banter and can't wait for someone to post a wind up or something controversial ;) Personally, I think there is a lot of good stuff on this bbs - but loads of crap to trawl through to get to it. I have to say it has kept me entertained all weekend reading the numerous slanging matches :) The way I deal with it is a) Don't read it, or b) Read it and LET IT GO, or c) Reply to it to add fuel to the fire!!! As for British sport cars, I think there might be some on Driven next week ;) Take it easy, J PS Is it cos I is black? ;) [that was a joke and not at all racist] |
Thanks for all your replies. I am a bit disheartened at the battering I got on this board - and I think moreso for my political views, which I am use to.
It utterly scares me that I should be condemned to hold views which are not compatible with others, especially on the Internet. Anyway, sticking to cars, I am aware Ford is USA owned, but I would rather give my money to the US or European countries rather that eastern companies. Aren't I entitled to my views? Or were my money goes? I was thinking of an Elise? Not practical but thats not my number one worry. |
True_brit - I dont have an issue about where u want your money ending up. I just think its a rather sweeping statement and I bet that you have a TV/PC/Hi-Fi/DVD/Video etc made in the far east or made by a far east manufacturer - so that then makes me question "loyalty" as a reason for not buying a car from the far east. If you dont have any of the above then my apologies ;)
|
I suggest you check out who owns what.
Buy a Mazda and Ford gain ! Buy a Nissan and Renault gain ! And who is the biggest share holder in Subaru ? Or is the objection to "eastern" companies something less logically based. I for one buy my car on price and performance rather than who (ie which nationality) builds it ! |
True_Brit, how do you define alternative? The Elise is a very nice car, but it's a completely different style of car. The only car that I can think of that comes close to being a comparable alternative (ie 4wd sporting saloon) is the Jaguar X-type.
Martin. Edited cos I don't know the alphabet :). [Edited by M_D_B - 3/4/2002 1:48:22 PM] |

Your political views are entirely your own, however much we might despise them. You will get a battering and people's backs up if you make a post like your first. If that is what you want, carry on posting in the same manner. If you want the answer to your question & a lively debate to boot, simply re-phrase your posting to not include any comment that might be construed as racist. Easy. Your post could've been done without reference to country "loyalty" etc etc and received educated and informed answers as opposed to diatribe against you and your beliefs. This is a car bbs - especially Imprezas :D |
Thanks for the PC lecture, shaggydog. Isn't it funny how you get branded as racist buy showing the slightest loyality to your country.
Frankly I'm disappointed by the quality of answers in this board as most of you seem hell-bent on challeging my political views (typical lot, eh) rather than answering the question. |
And I only wish to excerise control over where my money goes as far as I am aware, I know its not possible in all cases, but certainly is in some case.
I know anti-germans who refuse to by BMWs - each to their own and thats fair enough. |
Isn't Lotus owned by Proton a *gasp* asian manufacturer???
Would be interested to know what you end up with........not! |
You dont want a Subaru Impreza, so dont post on here, an alternative to the Impreza is an Evo so go on the Evo site or the Elise site or what ever you car your interested in.
|
Bl00dy h3ll guys, give this guy a break! As for a british alternative, I think an Elise is a good option, K-series are good motors and a guy at work has one, great car, although they can have reliability problems.
What about an Esprit? I would love one... Jaguar XJR? 4.0l supercharged beast, would also love one of those, Autotrader have a gorgeous blue one, 56k miles, oatmeal leather, etc etc for £12,990. Even though you are loyal to the flag (which is great), don't discount an Impreza. They are truly wonderful cars that will give you endless pleasure, I'm on my second now and would have no hesitation in getting another one. hope that helps, Matt. |
I am embarrassed by the response true Brit got to his question - ive been posting here for nearly a year now and find this site useful, interesting and informative but FFS what is the matter with you politically correct namby pambies - if the man wants a British car then give him some useful info and not an ear bashing!
Buy an Elise - although a Scooby would be better! "Political Correctness is the demise of free soiety" Phil |
