Good man.

I looked at the possible benefits but to be honest, i just dont trust anything this good for nothing, cheating, bent goverment do anymore.

I suspect that could be because he doesnt have a car or need to get into the town centre, doesnt affect me either but I dont think I would vote for it.

I cant say it would be a totally bad thing as Manchester is rammed most of the time, as has been said, public transport needs to improve and to be an incentive to get people out of there cars anyway, its actually quite liberating breaking your reliance on a car but not possible for everyone granted.

Official result just announced.....

j4ckos mate 12 December 2008 12:21 PM

Mogsi 12 December 2008 12:23 PM

j4ckos mate 12 December 2008 12:26 PM

whats the betting we get it anyway and the council tax shoots up to pay for it

Another victory for democracy. Well done people.:notworthy

Did London get a chance to vote for their congestion charge?

I can't remember. Probably not with a trotsky/stasi like red Ken at the wheel.

PeteBrant 12 December 2008 12:41 PM

Worth bearing in mind that this will come back again and again until people give the "right" answer. And the question will be changed/incentivised to give ensure it happens.

THis will come back , just in a different guise.

Yes we did get a chance to vote for it, but they ignored everyone so dont count your chickens just yet

Saw this and wondered what the voting was. Looked at the Beeb site at BBC NEWS | England | Manchester | Voters reject congestion charge and it said it was a 'no' vote but not by how much. Though it gives detailed voter turnouts! Typical Beeb. Even the Sky site didn't give the voting. However go to Road pricing plans face the axe after Manchester rejects congestion scheme - Times Online and " ... Manchester’s proposal for peak-time tolls of up to £5 a day was defeated by a majority of 4 to 1. The scheme was rejected in separate votes in all 10 Greater Manchester boroughs taking part in the vote. Just over a million people voted out of 1.9million balloted in the referendum ... ".

Well done all who voted! Though, like the Irish referendum, it remains to be seen how many times the vote will be taken until the *right* answer is achieved ...

That's helped a lot of Manchester retailers/restaurants etc. I used to drive over to London fairly regularly for social and shopping visits, but have not bothered once since their congestion charge was introduced. I spend my money in other towns/cities now, so :hjtwofing

On the other hand, we did actually get the threat upfront this time around:

Asked if Manchester would get even a small proportion of what it needed if it voted no, Mr Hoon said: “None whatsoever. If the vote is no there will be no central Government funding. The rules are very clear.”

Loading the question in this way was absolutely shameful to begin with IMHO - I'm just glad to see that the electorate were smart enough not to be bullied by it.

One of my brothers lives in Bow in East London. When i have gone up to visit with another brother he has always picked us up from Paddington in his VW camper van (he's got the flat 4 bit right:lol1: ).

He does this to save us carting our bags across London on the tube and bus.

To get from his place to the station and back he simply skirts around the charging zone adding a few exra miles but avoiding the charge.

Surely if many more people do this it merely causes more probles on non-charging roads which cancels out any alleged benefits of the charged zone.

Turbo2 12 December 2008 02:17 PM

How much did this whole fiasco cost to the tax-payer? Maybe we should add the equivalent value to the Labour Party's overdraft?

Leslie 12 December 2008 02:20 PM

I really hope that the Irish will reject the Lisbon constitution(for thst is what it really is) with an even bigger majority than before.

A lot of them seem to think it will protect them from the recession though!

On a broader issue the half wits in 'power' out to be bold enough to give us all a vote - to kick them out.

General Election please Gopher, I mean Grodon

On the local news £34 million down the pan

jaya 12 December 2008 05:52 PM

I don't live in Manchester but have to pass through their sometimes.I would of voted no too,and it's all a total rip off anyway. What is the whole point in having a tax disc displayed in your vehicle,it's proof that you have payed to use the road networks in this country, that was the point of a tax disc. This just reminds me of sky tv,you pay so much a month for sky sports. Then they want to charge you extra when say a famous boxing match is on.And them people saying ohh it won't effect me,it will effect everyone at some point. What about goods vehicles that have to travel into manchester to deliver your food and clothing etc,you will end up paying for it.Or am i totally wrong.

Luminous 12 December 2008 06:21 PM

Well done people of Manchester, congrats to common sense :thumb:

CLSII 12 December 2008 09:12 PM

Thank God for that result. Anything else would have opened the floodgates.

I can just imagine every local council thinking they had discovered a goldmine!

It's happened where i live by charging for parking in an area where the council provided previously free parking for local residents to make the streets safer for the locals as the roads were getting crammed full and children were in danger crossing the road etc.

Net result the once free car park is empty and the cars are all back congesting the roads. You couldn't make it up!

With the economic climate as it is this road crash of a government and its local minions need a serious reality check
