Just as a side note to this debate/discussion - i have seen a bent gudgeon pin after a boost spike of 2.2 bar + on a built EJ257, so a hydraulic lock is not the only way to bend a gudgeon pin.

The liners on a 257 (standard or custom) can fail for whatever reason and the couple i have seen have started on No 4 cylinder about the 1 o'clock position where it is blackened on the "burst" section of the liner.

So, this thread was posted, then Mr Tuckwood/area 52 complained to SN about it, ok this happens now and again, a quick retraction of comments, again we have seen this before, and while its annoying for other potential custmers, it seams its the way of life these days.

This should have been all swept under the SN carpet by now, but for Mr Tuckwood to come onto the thread after the comment retractions, and then spout some holy crap to the OP is an INSANE way to go about things in the public eye.

Its went from a thread that not many people would have seen, to one of them long term things that is going to drag on for a while, IMO probably doing more damage to the Area52 business, then if they had of just kept out of it and let it slide under the carpet.

its annoying as hell when these things are covered up, back in the day i could have saved myself a big fat wedge of cash by avoiding one company and having a proper rebuild done, but nobody ever talked about the crap work (nothing to do with any of the companies in this thread)

like i said earlier on the thread belive me there is worst companies that get away with a lot more AND THEY ALSO ADVERTISE ON HERE, i have a friend of mine who spent around 15k a 2.35 engine build and didnt even get a track day out of it didnt even get to drive it cause it kept on braking. im not going to mention the company or the memeber as its none of my business. but when i spoke to him about this thread he replied he would of been happy to have his car running ok for over a week let alone a year.

This post could be extremely misleading, so please be so kind as to confirm that your friends 2.35lt engine was not a Lateral engine !

The car in question is a very high spec 2.33,cp pistons,pauter rods, race heads/cams - It spun a bearing within 1k miles due to no apparant reason, once rectified it ran well for approx 500miles before dropping a valve, again once that was rectified the car ran for another 500miles before a serious rattle developed, this particular car was not worked on or built by Area52, all work was paid for in full on top of the initial £15k charge for building the engine, etc
There are some dogey engine builders on here, I'll let the owner of the car do the naming and shaming :)

I have no interest in who was responsible for the build in question, only that people don't think it was Lateral, and as Lateral are well known for the 2.35lt engines, I didn't want there to be any confusion.

It was not a Lateral supplied engine or Lateral supplied parts :)

It wasn't worked on by any tuners mentioned or involved in this thread and the majority of people know who previously worked on and built my car.

One thing I would add to this thread is that 95% of the tuners on this forum are top quality, I have had great experiences with Lateral, Zen, Area 52 and of course the creme de la creme Engine Tuner :)

However there is a small % who shouldn't be working on Subaru's or class themselves as Tuners.

It's a shame the forum doesn't vet Trader applicants as if they did like on other forums, there would be alot less hassle and overall a better experience within the SN Community...

Good stuff. I have a Lateral sump on my car, and think it is a great bit of kit.

Fitted spot on first time, and the design/welding is outstanding, and i have never heard a bad word about them. (infact i'd recommend one to anyone)

Hence i was a bit suprised by the comments.

Well like quite a lot of us i don't think i could ever fault Marks (laterals) stuff or his superb service in anyway.

Haven't used Zen or Area52 so cannot comment on them.

The final gap was nearly a second. 0.811 to be precise. I believe Oli turned up the Nos for a couple of final laps.

Lol i like the sound of that method although very unconventional i must say.

Not unconvential at all - most engine builders will agree that you need to show an engine load early on else the rings will not bed in.

Its my 1st time posting and having read this thread I can honestly say that some things are best left for face to face conversations and not public forums.

Mike/Area52 I am sorry but your customer service skills really do need looking at or maybe best left to someone with a better understanding of public relations.

As a newbie about to go through a rather serious revamp of my wifes (yes I said wife) P1 I can guarantee my engine rebuild will not be with Area52.

From what I can see Its not that you build bad engines or your skills are in question here but reading the thread as an outsider I cant actually see where you have actually said to your customer bring it in lets have a look and we will help you fix this problem.

The way your response reads to me is that you have said bring in your engine we will have a look and I will prove you are wrong and charge you for it.

Again I am sure you products are great and no doubt this is a one off but in a time where buyers have the market you are doing a great job of going the way of the dinosaurs.
