I managed to loose 7k in 1 year

I am on my 4th one, hypercar performance (on the top models) for 1/10th the price. Everyone will point and look at it and it really will hold its value. I have never lost more than 1500 a year in depreciation on a Caterham.

40k will get you the top spec CSR260. But TBH the CSR 260 has too much power for the road, so save 10k and get the CSR200, its just as fast on the road and you will be able to use all the power.

Get yourself along to a local Caterham meeting - PM me if you want info on your local meet. You will get to meet some mad and very friendly people and I guarantee it will be a life changing experience and you will wonder how you lived without a) the car and b) the friends you will make through the local club.

On a final note Caterham are doing 0% finance right now so you could put your money in ING for a couple of years and the interest will pay for your depreciation.

If you want more info PM me.

my advice is don't buy new, second hand they make great sense, still loose money new just like any other car when you add up the total cost with options and then sell after a year :(

Depends what model you buy. Some are more desirable than others, example is the 2 CSR 200's that Caterham have in at the mo - one 32k and one 33k, both 2005 cars. If you spec them up they are 34k OTR brand new inc the options listed. Thats not bad going for 12 months motoring IMHO!! You should expect to lose approx 1500 a year on a Caterham, and once you get down to about 10k thats the base line for even the oldest cars.

I have actually made money on one of my cars, I bought it in the winter when prices are a bit lower and sold the following summer and made 1k. ;)

Has to be a Jap car, so I'd go for an NSX Type R, as rare as rocking horse ****. I toyed with gettng a Porsche before I bought the STI but the other half said she would leave me if I did. I'm gald I didn't as when I went to Le Mans everyone that drove one was either very fat, or very old and fat. But hey buy what you want mate, its your cash:D

image doctor 13 July 2006 08:11 PM

Why as it got to be Jap??

Jap cars are cheap and fast.....with added chav value. You only get jap if you can't afford German!

ronjeramy 13 July 2006 08:18 PM

why not release that boyhood dream and get a Countach

CrisPDuk 13 July 2006 11:03 PM

1966 Mustang:cool:

Fastback, Coupe or Convertible, I'm not fussy:) So long as there is sorted a small block V8 under the hood, and four on the floor:thumb::D

craigdmcd 13 July 2006 11:28 PM

Geez, with 40K, I could just about pay off all my debt (excluding the mortgage) and just about afford a happy meal!!!!

however second hand cars at caterham are as usual way more then you will get as px or in a private sale. The mark up to the tune of 2-4K depending on model. Theefore both those px'd after 1 year would equate to a loss of 4-5k. Still pretty good considering the price new. Second hand caterhams make a lot more sense as this initial depreciation has gone and you can often get a car where someone has gone to town on the options list...CF, LSD, widetrack, dry sump, ao48 etc etc.

Saying all that a few years ago you could buy a superlight r and sell it a year later with hardly any loss....good old days :)

I'll second that (biased I know), a new T25 is about £40k though

ClintUK 14 July 2006 10:14 AM

£40K car for life

Personally I'd go for a 1972 Aston Martin DBS V8, I'd have change to get it into top running order and I'd keep it and pass it on to my kids (if I ever have any). Same age as me - hence the year, would love a Ferrari Daytona Spyder but £40K doesn't get that far.

A friend of mine has a similar idea for a 1973 Porsche Carrera.

Trouble is if your £40K is all your allowed ever and you get a moden car, there's always one a bit better round the corner. Go older and you can chill out and enjoy it.

OK so both of the above are down on dynamics, but they both hit 60 in under 6 seconds and you don't see yourself coming the other way. Plus you can have a lot of fun at legal speeds. Sadly a Scoob friend of mine, may be up for a ban soon

Oh and I have driven an older Aston but not the DBS, but thats not the point - this is a dream car thread.

In the meantime I should have 300bhp in my Scoob by August - cant wait :luxhello:

I asume you mean your mate wants a 1973 911 2.7 RS ?

Does he have 100k ;)

Exactly, I think I am still stuck in those days :lol1:

I think the prices of used 7s are getting quite low now as people are starting to struggle for money with higher cost of living and interest rates etc so they just want some money back. I sold my SLR and *made* £1000... :norty:

Doubt I could do that now.

Ideally, but he'd have to settle for £40ks worth of whatever

gazbert 14 July 2006 02:32 PM

If I had 40k for a car, I'd be choosing between a new Cayman S (if you can handle not having much space) or a new M3.

Used car wise, I'd be looking at getting a 911 C4S, M5, or a Noble... ;)

skoda_kid 14 July 2006 04:23 PM

After sitting in the new Z4M Coupe at the Goodwood FOS i would LOVE one of these, and if i had 40k, it would go straight on one!

You could pick up a very good 2.5 Noble M12 for 21-24K privately and have a permanent grin:)

Lovely cars. I've driven a good half dozen or so DBS's and vantages from early 70's to late 80's. Never a bad word said by anyone about them and always got loads of thumbs ups and waves. I remember driving back from the lakes to B'ham in a '78 Oscar India that had just had a full £20K ground up rebuild, it was like new. Pulled into a petrol station (which always hurts when you have to buy 90-100 litres of optimax :( ) and was filling up. Then one of the most beautiful woman i've probably ever seen came over and said thats a beautiful car, never seen anything like it etc....then she said "Is that your girlfriend in the passenger seat?" I had to admit it was ;) :lol1: "That's a shame she said, i was going to ask if you had time to go for a ride" Never been so gutted in my life, lol :lol1:

20 minutes later on the M6 it blew the exhaust manifold of it's just rebuilt engine

Great cars

I can afford expensive German cars but I love Japanese cars so I choose not to, its a personal preference. Suggesting that I drive Jap cars because I can't afford a German car is risible espcially when you dont know what I do for a living.

Quick tip! Engage brain before tapping on the key board.

blot 15 July 2006 06:31 PM

Actually, you only get English if you can't afford French, you only get French if you can't afford Jap, you only get Jap if you can't afford German, you only get German if you can't afford Italian and you only get Italian if you want to drive over to Paris and goad the French at the mo. Buy a scooter and spend the rest on fine wine, fine food and cheap women.:)
