I think it's an EXCELLENT idea!!!

1. Induction Kit - order a batch of MAFs, you WILL need them

2. Dump Valve - order a Burberry Cap and Chav Gold Chain

3. Gold Wheels - tell your mates you are Gay FIRST! They will know for sure!

4. Lexus Lights - get me a Happy Meal while you are at Macs please

Pete :D

I will leave you all with the words of another poster on ScoobyNet who had asked some respected chaps about the CockLink:-

And I quote, exactly:-

"Ive spoken to a few tuning garages about the knocklink (power engineering, well lane, scooby clinic) and was told by all that they are a waste of time.
I quote "if the engines gonna blow a strip of coloured led's aint gonna make the slightest bit of difference, by the time you can react to a potentrialy dangerous situation the damage is done, all it does is tell you that your engines blown but you'll already know that because of the bang, the standard knock sensor does its job perfectly well as long as the car is set up correctly and isnt mapped too close to the limit". I was told this by someone at power engineering and have been told similar by 2 other garages"

There we go then .....

A repeat of a line is worth doing:- "the standard knock sensor does its job perfectly well"

I always knew these Japanese chaps were mighty clever, and Pete has just proven it to me.

At 4000rpm, the engine revolves approx. 67 times per second. On a 4 cylinder 4 stroke engine, this gives 134 power strokes per second. This equates to 134 opportunities to pick up detonation.

Of course, the majority of detonation initially occurs due to a hot spot on one cylinder only, which reduces the frequency with which knock occurs down to a mere 33 times per second.

So the Subaru ECU senses something that occurs 33 times per second, but makes adjustments - not just a thousand times a second - but many thousands of times per second! These Subaru engineers are so clever, they have broken basic laws of physics, and invented an engine management unit capable of time travel!

I thought you were an engineer Pete? With thinking like that above, I have a sneaking suspicion you couldn't engineer your way out of a paper bag.

You complete frigging idiot

The knock sensor does NOT listen at a TIMED sequence!!

It is listening steplessly, ie. all the time to all intents and purposes

Whatever the timing of the detonation, whether it be once an hour or 200 times a second does NOT matter one jot!

You are clear living proof that Morons once shagged Village Idiots!!

I am going to stick my head on the chopping block and agree with Pete,
Knocklinks are for the obsessed.
I repeat what i have already said in that most owners have no idea what the bloody things are so why can they be so necessary?
If det was such a problem and cars were blowing up left right and centre Subaru and motoring mags would have to say something......do they ....NO!
There must be thousands of cars out there without such devices driven by normal people, no mods etc etc etc quite happy with their Subaru so why bother????
I also bet that most owners chuck whatever fuel is cheapest or nearest into their pride and joy's without a care in the world.
I am on my second Subaru, bought in the main dealer network and on both occasions i have never been told what fuel to use.
I am convinced that this site is sometimes if not always Subaru negative:mad:
Why not rename it Fordnet.
I bet outsiders are pissing themselves reading about us lot slagging our own cars off ,remember if you don't wrap them in cotton wool they will go BANG!

I am also disapointed that Webmaster has been drawn into a daft little argument with Pete.
You should know better.

This isn't just aimed at King but do all those digging at Pete have knocklinks or are you all jumping on the lets get at Pete society ?
Just interested.........

They simply cannot take me down on their own, so gang up into a pack and attempt it ............. they usual lose even then :D

They are not capable of a reasoned one on one debate with me .... I am far too superior :D

I agree on all points. My UK Subaru is the best, most reliable car I've ever owned. I had to replace the MAF within a month of buying it, but the only non-service items I have had to replace since then, in three years, are two rear shocks. It's on 106,000 miles and I often drive it with a heavy foot: but in all that time it's never broken down, it's never refused to start. The cars are shagged by idiots, not lack of knocklinks. I reckon if I bought a non-abused import I could run it on 95 ron for evermore without blowing it up because I have mechanical sympathy.

Roojai 10 February 2006 11:46 PM

They are useful, PSlewis has no idea what he is on about.

I noticed considerably more activity on my knocklink with a smaller IC than a larger one.

My knocklink warned me when my Jap ECU was not suitable for Uk fuel and my boost conditons and allowed me to change the set-up before then engine damage.

My knocklink warned me when my scoobyecu was mapped too aggressively for my set-up and allowed me to get the map adjusted before the damage.

And I noticed considerably more less activity on my knocklink when I got it remapped.

And I am not just talking about the "Big Red" warning which is full on det, but also the background lower level det noise can be detected through the other LED's to provide warning.

All of the above situation should have been adjusted for by the ECU but the standard ECU is not completely full-proof and may not retard sufficiently.

Mappers will agree that there base maps will not account for all situations (ie the ECu can only adjust so far). that is why they have to get the map so right in the first place.

If you look at computers like the Power FC, they have knocklink diplays built in. This is standard on them because Apexi know that detecting knock is important.

As for the adjustment argument that PSlews holds up as proof of the uselessness of the knocklink, all scoobys should be run with the knocklink set to the most sensitive level, there is no need to adjust.

nik52wrx 10 February 2006 11:49 PM

Quite frankly i think this site contains a lot of B.S.
Where i live in the N.E. I must see around five Imprezas in my local area,
Ingleby B. and a fast lady not so far away who drives her WR1 fills up in our local Tesco which only sells normal unleaded and i bet she isn't aware of octane values, cocklinks, det and F'in this that and the other..her car is still running so wheres thae panic!
Lets chill out and say positive things about our cars.
I've only owned my Sti UK for a week and i think its ace :thumb:
My bugeye never missed a beat so in my view Subaru's are great cars!
Lets be positive :D
