The quote I got from Frankfurt was from a BMW dealer and not a broker in the UK.

The guy at the dealership is Arnd Zoller, his number is 0049 694 036 187 and email: arnd.zoeller@bmw.de. This guy is on the ball and knows exactly what is needed for UK spec and he also knows all about UK import procedures.

When importing a car from Germany you have to pay German VAT @16% when the car is supllied from the dealer. You later get the German VAT back from the German dealer once you prove you have paid UK VAT. Customs & Excise will also explain this to you.

I must admit, if I had a choice between M3 and P1...hmm...put an evo into that equation and it would be damn hard.

Add a Skyline, and my head would explode.

Is it cheaper to get German cars straight from Germany or via a country like Holland. I know that Holland has high tax and hence as if you export you don't pay the tax (well the UK VAT you pay is less than the Dutch tax you avoid) it ends up cheaper to get some cars from there. I am not sure for cars like BMWs though.

Any thoughts?

My only problem with getting another Japanese Supercar [and they ARE supercars] is with modification.
If I get a Skyline I want leather and 500bhp.
If I get a Makkinen I want it black, lowered, leather, Motec, mongoose.
If I get an M3 I'll put on the 19's and titanium interior.
And with another littl'un [The Force is Strong in this One] I don't know how the wife will react to my throwing wedge at another car.
And the new M3 makes me twitch!
Admittedly not as much as a Skyline though.

I imported a Mk4 Golf GTI Turbo for the wife in April 99 from a VW garage in Holland, at the time they gave me the best quote for the golf and the exchange rate was favourable, as it is at the moment with the Euro so weak.

One of the cheapest places for cars is Denmark, but the closest quote to Denmark was the BMW dealer in Frankfurt, plus the guy in Denmark was not aware of full UK spec, where as the Franfurt garage needed no prompting. He was even aware of the recent UK spec upgrade e.g. park distance control etc that now comes standard with most 3 series models, plus Frankfurt is easier to get to.

I would rather import myself, as I have done and will do again, purely because I don't want to line a Brokers pocket for them to do what is very simple i.e form filling and paying customs & excise the VAT and then VRO for road fund licence.

I may be a little late to add this but, I was down at ProDrive recently (getting my PPP done) and saw an 'unusual' looking P1 in the workshop.

Nobody around so I went down the corridor and had a look - different interior and big 18" wheels - then a ProDrive guy popped out of an office and told me it was a 'P1 Plus'

Personally, I'd rather just get an import 280bhp car and save the money.

If I had the option I would have baught an STI 5/6, it's less money than the M3,
has AWD!, 0-60 in 4.6 sec, and with the rest 5k you can put it well over 300hp and well over the M3.
I'm staying with AWD and Japanese cars.
