Don't disagree - but then again there are more import things like no insurance and unroadworthy vehicles driven by scrotes is what I'm saying :)

Having been hit by someone without insurance in a stolen car I have first hand experience - so you still don't always have the opportunity to catch the scumbag whether the car has a small number plate or a standard one! :(

Imported vehicles can have a LEGAL smaller plate. Below is an extract from the DVLA regulations. I have a plate made up to this specification and I keep a copy of the regulation in the glove box.

Size and spacing of characters: special cases
14A. –
(1) This regulation applies in relation to any vehicle imported into the UK which,

(a) does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval;

(b) is so constructed that the area available for the fixing of the registration plate precludes the display on the plate of a registration mark in conformity with the requirements of regulation 14.

(2) In relation to a vehicle to which this regulation applies -

(a) each character in the registration mark must be 64 millimetres high;

(b) the width of each character of the mark, other than the letter "I" and the figure "1", must be 44 millimetres;

(c) the width of every part of the stroke forming a character in a mark must be 10 millimetres;

(d) the spacing between any two characters within a group must be 10 millimetres;

(e) the vertical spacing between groups of characters must be 5 millimetres;

(f) the width of a margin between the mark and the top and lateral sides of the registration plate must be not less than 5 millimetres;

(g) the space between the bottom of the mark and the bottom of the registration plate must be not less than 13 millimetres; but, within that space, the space between the bottom of the mark and the top of the name and postcode of the person by whom the plate was supplied must be not less than 5 millimetres."[3]

Had my old car broken into and called the police. All they were interested in was my small plate and checking the tread on my tyres.

The criminals were never caught, and i ended up with a £30 fibe for an illegal plate.

Sounds about right. Some kids tried to steal one of my mates cars, unfortunately it was blocked in by a car shell that he was rally prepping, so they threw it over his garden wall whereupon it got a parking ticket.

And i could give several examples of times when a 'pull' for a relatively minor offence has caught out larger issues as well.

Fact of the matter of this is simple, if you are going to run with an illegally spaced plate then at some point in time you will be caught, and you could well be fined.

And I am afraid that the Impreza does not fall into this category, it has the space for a full size plate so this is what must be displated.

If that's all it is to you, why are you getting so wound up about it? You knew the law and chose to break it. You got caught. Now stop crying like a girl.

If it's an import then the letters can be motorcycle size, my front plate was a large square thing blocking most of the grill, now it's a lot smaller and looks better, and it's legal.

I got pulled in Jan, 3rd time out in my classic and was hit with a £30 fine to which I did not pay in time and still to this day heard nothing nothing of.

The plate that was on the scoob when I bought was used as a template to measure up the same size though with my letters - turns out this was illegal, would like to see what urs looks like as mine is an import and to see if I have any legs to stand on!

I do agree now that if its an illegal plate then the coppers have every right to pull you over. I dont really agree with the constant fining when there is people out there causing crimes such as hit and runs...

And everytime I am out, I see at least one plate in my area that is a illiegal or is a different colour, example, lotus, they have even smaller plates on them but never seem to be pulled........
