Some but not most had less than the overall limit but a good point even so. MUCH more importantly, commercial vehicles with a very few exceptions (i.e. Midland Red Motorway London-Bham M1 shuttle buses), could not achieve or sustain anywhere near 70 mph. Travel at 70 mph on modern motorways and you'll soon have several "must keep the load moving" 40+ tonnes of articulated six-axles multi-wheelers up your .... less than a metre or two from your boot lid ...... That above all else is why there MUST be a speed differential for different vehicles on modern roads..... and enforced lane exclusions for certain vehicles.

Things have moved on enormously. The laws have not.

Despite the lower speeds of most 1960s cars, many, repeat many owners would modify their cars then, much moreso than is the case nowadays. Friends had Minis with 14-1 comp ratios giving well in excess of 100bhp - well sorted - Little rockets and would surprise many a modern fast car but, then Five star rocket fuel was available everywhere ..... :) What's five star Dad? .... :D

Back in the 1960s, I frequently cruised at three figure mph speeds all quite legally on both 4 and 2 wheels (motorcycles dummy ..:) ). Commercial vehicles rarely got in the way and were much better behaved than some of today's examples. Are lorries still disallowed to use some motorway lanes? ... not seen much evidence of that exclusion lately.

Back then, when approaching a Police Car ( S-type Jag, Daimler Dart V8, MGC etc) poodling along at around 70 mph, more often than not they'd move over and WAVE you by. I kid you not. Imagine that happening today ... In your dreams. What's hand signals Dad? ..... :)

It boil's down to this,

There is a time and a place when you can push a car to high speed's ie, very late at night, long straight's with good visibility and nothing ahead, that way you'll only kill yourself if something goes wrong, and even then it's risky.

Doing that speed at daytime on a busy road, is downright pathetic, i dont care what anyone think's.

I know the road in question as im sure so did the guy who got done and as far as the 40mph bit is concerned there is a gatso just b4 the junction on entering the 40 limit which i slow down for and one b4 the junction b4 exiting it. in between these junctions there are no laybys etc, and you quite easily hit 130mph in between as i have with a 944 turbo behind me ( albeit at night when there wasnt much traffic ).
The point is though that 80%of the people who use all these performance car type message boards will have done at least once so-called "silly speeds" then thought afterwards , " that was a bit dodgy ". Adrenaline comes at a price i guess!

but 156 mph on a public road in daytime ?, going a little to mad i think, that is risking his life and many other's, which is not worth the quick buzz he is getting from doing that speed.

Its been mentioned twice already but we're ignoring it. The guy WAS ALREADY serving a driving ban. Speeding(Dangerous Driving in this case) while banned and with no insurance. 5 Months for me looks OK. Obviously a nutter, driving like a tit while banned FFS, no sense.

It's a pity that the guy was already banned, as I'd like to have seen what the penalty would have been with a (reasonably) clean licence. The report I read (BBC News) suggested that the Sherriff placed more emphasis on the speed than the 'driving while banned'.

The Law really Pisses me of, I myself was nearly killed by a guy who hit me head on at over 120mph, and he was drunk, what did he get £275 fine £125 costs and a 15 month ban, the judges in this country are not consitant enough to stop people like this.
