I got rid of my 50mb line a couple of years ago as I suddenly dropped to 30mb and they didnt really sem interested in resolving the problem. I now have the upgraded 60mb line and Im still only getting 30mb. I would of had the 100mb line if it wasnt for the speed problem

Its an arse when that happens; You just have to keep plugging away until eventually they pass you on to a senior tech and that tech knows what he is doing and is frank with you about the cause and resolution.

For exmaple, for us there is a cabling issue in the street to the green boxes on the street corner. Now that causes me a SNR problem.

What 'needed' is to have the street dug up and a new cable put in. But as it was just me with the main issues (I live next to a load of old OAPs that barely know how to use the internet :lo1l: ) there is no way they'd budget that kind of operation to satisfy one customer. What they have donw instead is replace equipment in the green distribution boxes and of course my equipment/modem etc until I had a usable SNR.

That was the suituation until someone messed with teh distribution box and moved my connection to one which worsened my SNR. Clued-up guy turned up and put it back to as it originally was.

Now I'm on a superhub. I thought it may feck things up, but apart from its appauling Wifi/Router capabilities, its cable-modem is OK, so it just lives in modem only mode.

Whilst it is a pain when its broke, the only thing it has cost me is time. Unlike at the offices I work at; one is Griffin internet, one is Talk talk (via onebill) and its shyte. Constant drop outs, slow speed, and neither of them want to know, and that makes big impact on business, plus they don't supply or take responsibility for any equipment. Same with Sky - they just want to you to pay money for call-outs/new equipment: Like when my gran's modem died - only when we threatened to cancel the subscriptions to go to Virgin did they show any interest. She's on on 10megabits now...on the same telephone exchange as my one office that only gets 3megabits, even though we pay for "upto" 10mb!! :mad:

So Talk Talk email me today to say Fibre Optic is now available. I currently pay £7 for BB and £5 extra for unlimited with £13 line rental, so £25 p/m all in. It's supposed to be 8Mb, but get regularly 10-11Mb.

They want +£10 for 35Mb and +£15 for 78Mb. That sound a decent deal?

For 120 mb and phone line we pay about £38

i have had many ADSL vendors in my time, BT, TALKTALK, SKY and many more, and i still think Virgin is the best.

Ive got 120 meg and have never had any issues apart from the odd outage Poss 3 in 4 years. Latency is very low, pings are very Low.
Just bob on. no arguements here.

Finally back on line (moved house, well sort of :o )

Had a "slight" speed increase....and a new superhub (matt black instead of glossy) with a totally SILENT power supply :king: .

I know most people here are probably deaf to these types of noises, but you wouldn't believe how much misery the old noisy PSU inflicted on my sensitive hearing :cry:

Can't say it feels much faster than 20Mb mainly, but its a hell of alot quicker than the sodding 3G that I've been living with of recent.

Your finally up to 100mb but all the mainstream sites for stuff are being forced out so there is no real need for a high speed connection ;)

Connection speed is just for bragging rights really. A lower latency is far more desirable for normal browsing. I would rather have 10MB with a low latency than 100MB with higher latency any day of the week. Unless you are into illegal downloading there is no need for 100MB anyway!

So a 7ms local(ish) ping is no good then? :D

Sure that is ok, but right now, Virgin is sucking for a lot of gamers due to massive latency issues to game servers.

Sure they will get it sorted again tho :thumb:
