I'm lucky though, a Shell next to work so I almost have to use it as a daily driver just in case I run out and I wasn't expecting it. ;)

I'd just swap to Tesco, Jeff. There's plenty of them around.

Sure a quick search on "store locator" on the Tesco website will tell you where the petrol stations are. Make a note of who sells Momentum and Bob Rawles's your uncle :D

I'll have mine mapped for Tesco 99 as Shell is/was more expensive :thumb:

Good idea, except:
1. They are often out of 99.
2. They can't/won't tell you when more is due.
3. Phoning ahead is impossible...ever tried to phone Tesco, let alone the petrol stations....?

Ok to pick the points separately...

1. In my experience as a regular Momentum customer, in the last 9-10 trips (I brim the tank every Thursday/Friday), there's only been one time they were out. For that one time I would have a bottle of octane booster ready and top up with that mate with normal unleaded.

Anyway to consider getting rid of a recently built Subaru that cost you a 5 figure sum to build to your own desired spec because fuel came be a pain to purchase sometimes is madness. I'd rather get the car mapped again for normal unleaded or have Bob Rawle add another map, one for 99 and one for 97/95 (Esso super or any normal unleaded).

The above is what I would personally do before even contemplating anything silly like selling or leaving the marque. :)

Unless you're nailing the car everywhere it doesn't matter a toss what fuel you use.

You are not going to damage your engine by putting a tenners worth of 95 in it if you drive it sensibly.

The only time you will damage an engine is when you're on extended WOT at full boost with **** fuel.

I'd be quite happy to drive my car from Lands end to Home on 95 if that was the only fuel available. I'd just drive my car accordingly.

I think you're making a mountain out of a mole hill. Tesco was empty of momentum last night but I've been today and filled up. So if at anytime they are out of momentum you can just pop down the road to Esso and put 97 in or indeed 95 that will get you by until the tanker arrives at Tesco

Maybe I've grown out of the car: I rarely, if ever, use ANY of the performance now, and if I do, I worry about knock, fuel consumption etc etc:(

running on 95 is probably ok as long as your off boost but the second you enter the boost zone you're doing damage. One thing i learned during a mapping session when a boost gauge was fitted was how hard it was to drive without entering the boost zone. You literally have to drive like the purple rinse brigade on pension day.

TBH with the amount you have invested both financially and time wise over the years, there must be something there Jeff that keeps your interest. :) Maybe its not worth having a Subaru any more but plenty of people still do. Have you not thought about doing a driving day with it to ise its potential safely, both road/engine wise? Or just going for a bloody good drive somewhere?

shell near me has stopped selling v power too. so nearest shell is over 10 miles away and nearest tossco that sells 99 is 8 miles away

40 mile round trip for 99 doesnt bother me half as much as getting there and paying 149 a litre.....
and i find that my remapped 05 sti runs very lumpy on straight 95 at any revs, kinda stuttery up top on 97 and fine on 97 plus OB or straight 99
no way id run mine every day these days, back in '04 i did 26000 miles in my classic and worked out it cost me £7500 in fuel alone and thats when it was 80p a litre....

That's what I'd do.

Before mods, my old UK classic ran it with no issues and dynoed at 240bhp which isn't bad, considering it was supposed to 208bhp.

You also benefit from a fuel with a slightly higher calorific value (more energy per litre), which offsets any bhp/mpg loss.
