Thank you all very much for all the info and advise :notworthy

I'd love to have DCCD, but there's too much involved in a conversion for that on my car.

I'd like to keep it simple and therefore go for a UK 6speed box, 6speed 160 diff, 6speed prop... and then use all my driveshafts and hubs :)

You guys have been great, thank you! :D

For example, if I get in to the situation where I pick up a 2002 STi box (TY856WN2CA) and matching 180 rear diff thats not gonna work... I'll need to source a 160 diff.

What are the ratio's on the 160 rear diff so I know what to look out for?

banny sti 11 October 2011 11:49 AM

A rear diff from any uk classic will be fine they are all 3.545

dunx 11 October 2011 12:39 PM

4 wires aint no big deal, just use a Neetronics controller. +12V GND and two DCCD connections.

Tidgy 11 October 2011 12:45 PM

how about getting a 5 speed uprated gearkit and getting that put in your box, keeps the ratios as well as dccd.

not sure how strong the dccd kit is though.

Sounds straight forward enuf... and also dash clocks with DCCD shift on them and the DCCD switch?

I'll be happy enough just to have the stronger 6 speed with minimal other alterations (plus me and any kind of rwd action isnt a good combo, lol).

I think I'll still aim for the UK box with 160 rear diff (3.545) :)

dazdavies 11 October 2011 02:16 PM

Just to confirm Alex,

That if you get a 6 speed box from a UK car then you'll need an UK R160 (3.54) Diff from a UK turbo 2000.

You current Diff although an R160 is not of the correct ratio.

All newage six speed diffs are R180 and thus too big for your current set up.

So to recap, what you need for the easiest solution is the following.

UK 6 Speed gearbox
R160 Diff from a UK Turbo 2000 (plenty of them around)
6 Speed prop or a prop from an Auto WRX
Gear linkage and gear knob.

Everything else will just swap over such as Flywheel and clutch etc.

alex_00s 11 October 2011 03:25 PM

Thats brilliant dazdavies :thumb:

I think I may have found the gearbox from a UK 2002 STi so will just have to keep fingers crossed on that then hunt for a UK classic 160 rear diff.

BTW just read up on the spec of your machine  wow...

dunx 11 October 2011 03:27 PM

Neetronics is a stand alone, no need for all the OEM gubbins...

If you are going to do it get the whole rear end and fit the larger brakes, etc.

I wont lie I'm very tempted, but I know how much trouble I get in to with rwd and anything along those lines I'd do something stupid and if I totalled my car I'd be devistated.

I'll stick with no DCCD :) But thank you for that info its interesting good to know :thumb:

darms 11 October 2011 09:59 PM

subscribed........I'm sure i'll need this info at some point too ;)

alex_00s 11 October 2011 10:40 PM

I'm really impressed with the clear and consice info from these guys regarding my box change.

I chanced it when replacing my 5 speed for another 5 speed... well it was worth a shot, but the power/torque of my can along with the anti lag and launching has proven too much for the box and any others I'd bung in there.

6 speed really is the only option.
Its good to have a few options of those with JDM/DCCD etc, but for me personally I just want a no fuss upgrade :)

Tidgy 11 October 2011 10:51 PM

6 speed isn;t your only option.

53 11 October 2011 11:03 PM

Trails has a P1 box for sale that would be stronger than yours :) and cheaper than a 6spd :)

alex_00s 12 October 2011 11:01 AM

Whats the code on the P1 box?

I think the box I just broke was a P1 box...

As in PPG?

There's so many different varients of gear sets from PPG I think thats opening a whole new can of worms and wonder in deciding which to go for etc...

I'd be happy with a reasonably priced 6 speed that just wont break, thats all I really want :)

alex_00s 12 October 2011 02:10 PM

The box that was in my car originally and the replacement box... both had that code and both died a horrible death, lol

The 2nd one I only had in for 3mths b4 I killed it... must have been on its way out b4 I got it

dazdavies 12 October 2011 02:19 PM

6 Speed = fit and forget
PPG = Maybe it'll break, maybe it won't.

I noticed that PPG have just brought down their power rating yet again.

Was 600 then 450 now 400, says it all really!!!

If it's non PPG there's that much abiguity as to whos running what kit and at what power.

Stick with what you know will DEFINITELY work not with what MAYBE will.

I really cannot put it any plainer than that!!!

alex_00s 12 October 2011 04:06 PM

Yes I agree and I've already played the gamble of fitting an oem box on the off chance it might have survived... it didnt but was worth a shot.

You got it right Daz, I now want as close to definate of a guarantee on a box that'll last instead of taking yet another chance.

Check the ratios of your 180 against the new box.

Sorry I have what might be a stupid question, but how do you know what ratios are in a rear diff if you had one sitting in front of you?

alex_00s 13 October 2011 10:02 PM

I've been offered:

A WR1 box with JDM 1st-4th gears then the longer 5th and 6th which is more than what I'd have hoped for.

And have been told it'll work with a 3.54 rear diff, is this correct?

Also I can 'run it open' without the wiring and controller, basically its 'default' setting? And the box wires will connect to my cars oem plugs?

If this is all correct then I'll get my wallet out :D

alex_00s 13 October 2011 10:03 PM

ps: I'm not for 1 second doubting the seller, I just wanna be 200% sure b4 I commit to buy as I dont want to mess anyone about or make a mistake.

Yes it will work with a 3.54 diff, you can leave the dccd disconnected and run it open. Though you could wire up the dccd with all the standard stuff from a classic type r/ra and it will control the dccd.

Everything else is plug and play :thumb:

alex_00s 14 October 2011 07:47 AM

Thank you :)

So at a later date if I fancied it I could get the DCCD working... cool :D

This box I'm looking at has done 128k miles, but I was thinking it may be worth taking it to my local gearbox place and asking them to open it up and change the syncro's if necessary b4 fitting... good idea?

I've got a ver6 STi and just want to know exactly what I'll need along with the 6 speed box.

Am I correct in needing the following:

6 speed flywheel
6 speed clutch
prop shaft
rear diff (180 or 160?)
drive shafts
gear linkages
hubs?
gearbox mounting bracket

Please advise me on this and anything I should particularly look out for :thumb:

6 speed gear nob mate! :) Can't believe you destroyed another!

dazdavies 14 October 2011 09:18 AM

And fork bushes if you can. Although on some I believe thats a new fork job and not just the bushes. I'm not 100% on that though.

alex_00s 14 October 2011 01:22 PM

I've already got a nice nob Lee... you've seen it :lol1:

Thanks Daz I'll also get them to see about the fork bushes...

...iirc a basic rebuild of just the syncro's is gonna be tickling the £400 mark. Is there anywhere that could do this job at a more reasonable price?

dunx 14 October 2011 01:32 PM

Check the bearings too !

And that £400 will cover the synchros, double it with labour...

in my classic i have a jap spec box with a full jap spec six speed prop fitted to an r160 3.9 diff my prop fitted fine and the front shatfs are good from your orginal, but to be fair if i had the extrat dosh at the time i would have fitted the r180 jap spec 3.9 diff but like said above you need rear hubs and brakes and rear shafts of the newage,, and yes a six speed is fit and forget i love my jap spec six speed
