Should be 3 strikes and you're out - for both young drivers and new drivers. Three fault accidents in a year and the insurance company should refuse to insure you.

Don't think so.

My eldest was hit by an uninsured driver, his own insurance stumped up as he was Fully Comp, but he lost his £750 excess. Had he been only third party etc, I'm not sure WHAT would have hapened.

We eventually got the excess back, and his insurers to accept that, since it was a "no-fault" claim, they should reinstate his ncd. This was done via the Motor Insurers' Bureau.

His insurance company never told him about the MIB, we found that out from on here. The insurance company basically said, "As far as we are aware, there is no scheme, or institution who can help you."

Oh, and the uninsured kid?

Got done for no insurance and DWDCA.:nono:

TOTAL of 6 points and £155 in fines and Victim Surcharge, no costs.:cuckoo:

I've seen folk get triple that for speeding:rolleyes:

This country is fukced up.

They virtually do: they would quote you £20,000 or so.

But how would that help? Those who drive uninsured would STILL drive uninsured.

alcazar 28 April 2011 10:27 AM

And as for young drivers, how come OUR government can't put together a scheme like the Australians have, whereby EVERYONE in the country HAS to by third party insurance from them at the same time as they buy a tax disc, no insurance, no tax disc.

They pay around €200 each for it, no-one pays more.

And anyone who wants, or needs more than third party, goes to one of the insurance companies for it, to extend what they already have.

Driving uninsured is virtually non-existant, and could be here if OUR government REALLY cared about it.

TylerDurden 28 April 2011 12:54 PM

What about people that buy a car to fix in their spare time?

Isnt it unreasonable for them to pay ££££ for a car they are not driving?

alcazar 28 April 2011 01:02 PM

AFAIK, as it stands at present, if the vehicle is on your property, it needs neither MoT, nor tax, nor insurance?

I thought with SORN it could not be driven on the public highway? Surely Tax and Insurance is required along with an MOT:wonder:

The Trooper 1815 28 April 2011 01:56 PM

I know SORN is valid on the way to an MOT but surely if you drive it to a track then that's different? Unless you have a trailer :D

£4k for a reason though.

Insurers gave young drivers a chance for many years..... but they f**ked up (driving like tits). Now they have to pay for it unfortunately.

They had their chance.... they blew it.

What a load of bollox.......get a grip
If you wasn't in insurance you wouldn't chirp that crap

18 year old girl.....3k for a ford ka. Load of bollox , as usual we are hammered left right and centre and we bend over and take it

hedgecutter 28 April 2011 06:25 PM

put the uninsured in the town stocks for a few hours, and provide rotten fruit. Flog them merclessly for a 2nd offence; charge spectators and put money in pot for those hit by uninsured. sorted.

Arkynsei 28 April 2011 06:45 PM

As much as I hate nob'eds for driving around uninsured.. I can sort of see why they do it, I believe I was fairly lucky to insure my 1.4 Seat Ibiza when I passed my test, total of £2000. Not too bad REALLY but still a lot. I've seen a lot of people in here complaining of 4 odd k's worth of insurance costs and frankly that's silly.

If it really is a minority spoiling it for the rest of it, that's incredibly sad. It is the minority racing around the streets at night in there souped up Saxo's, so why should sensible drivers who invest time, money and love into their car get shafted.

Phew.. weight off my chest a bit there :P

scoobiesteve103 28 April 2011 08:36 PM

partly because of uninsured drivers my own insurance has gone up £100 a yr for the last 2 yrs,ive not had any claims or anything so why punish me and others like me for it. insurance is a joke along with fuel so soon it will just be all uninsured drivers running around in sheds while us lot in scoobs will have to watch youtube vids to remind ourselves how much fun we could be having. alcazar is rite with the aussie rules, something we as a country should think about

I don't insure any 17/18 year olds, so my opinion isn't based on me trying to insure them.

You're obviously an expert though, so you must know about the costs involved in claims with young drivers.

Bollox? Get a grip? If the truth hurts then nothing i try to explain is going to get you to get your head out your arse is it? :hjtwofing

Yes, that's correct.

The insurers can then try to claim their costs back.

thought that was right, pays to go with a good insurance company as most wouldnt even mention anything about this possiblity.
If this was to happen does it effect ur no claims? Am insured by yourself if that makes any diff, guessing all companys are diff

Moley 28 April 2011 09:06 PM

Doesn't effect you at all, aslong as your policy isn't covering that car still (ie you cancelled it or swapped it onto another car)

Drivers will just 'go underground' if they can't drive legally i.e just drive anyway with no insurance, mot etc.

What is the answer to this? I dunno? Surely it is not ANPR on every corner though?

Australia have their fair share of illegal drivers, i.e people banned but who drive anyway. At the end of the day the court can only revoke your license or crush car so they drive anyway until their banger is confiscated then get a new one.

But yes it's got nothing like on the scale of Bradford with 50% illegal metal razzing about and all claiming whiplash.

Needs the law to be changed so they get a proper punishment.
ie banned for 6 months, and if you caught driving in those 6 months then you go inside. Would need bigger/more prisons though.

Because the government would be the ones picking up the bills for the personal injury.... which is the cause of increased premiums at the moment.

(was a report on Watchdog about it this evening)

Maybe the UK needs rules like under 25's can't drive turbos or something like that? But the main people who are to blame for the costly insurance are the people faking whiplash etc and the ambulance chasing lawyers.

nick172sport 28 April 2011 09:16 PM

At 4k plus for a poxy 1 liter car to insure, id like to know who all these 17 18 year olds are that can afford that to get on the road and cause havoc pushing up the rates. Having a son myself who is 17 nearly 18 i know a lot of lads his age. Mine is the only one i know who has got his licence. Fat lot of good tho as he wont be driving at that price. I don't know any that drive let alone can afford 4k insurance? wish i knew who these lads are, could do with a sub from them rick boys :lol1:

Moley 28 April 2011 09:25 PM

I have no idea how they do it. I'd guess a lot of those cars belong to mum or dad, and the youngsters are insured as an 'occasional' driver. ;)

I certainly wouldn't be able to afford to drive if i was 17 again. I paid £500 when i was a lad!!!

I've tried everything to get my lad on the road. He is a good lad, never been in trouble, looking forward to going to uni in sept. I even tried to insure him in an old east german Trabant. 600cc of gutless eastern bloc crap that only did 70 mph from new. 0 to 60 in 21 secs from new. This motor was 22 years old so i doubt it will reach the blistering figures ive just quoted :lol1::lol1: . No chance tho. tried classic insurance but they state over 25's only. If you could find a way even in a motor like this you would be mine and my boys hero.

nick172sport 28 April 2011 09:33 PM

in 1983 i insured a escort rs mexico 18 yrs old 600 quid lol i was only on 35.00 a week apprentice wage all my money paid the insurance nice car though wish id kept it id be loaded:D

Pramas 28 April 2011 09:59 PM

when i was 18 i had a cav sri, had to find a specialist company to insure that car and this was some 15yr ago or so, was still a bit pricey but if thats the kind of car u want, u have to pay for it

dunx 29 April 2011 12:37 AM

Pah ! Kids today are spoilt, not many driving 15 year old cars.

My first car was ! Mind you the insurance was a whopping £43... :lol1:

Gotta luv' the 70's.

dunx

Pramas 29 April 2011 12:47 AM

£43 what where u driving a trabant ! lol wished my 1st quote was that

spally 29 April 2011 01:33 AM

someone has already posted this, but surely it is as simple as limiting the engine size of the car until x years have passed, just like they do with motor bikes. ok wont stop, not going to say youngsters, inexperienced drivers from crashing, but should decrease the size of the crash.

those that drive unisured are not going to be stopped by adding points to their licence etc, because they just dont give a dam anyway.

Like most things in life, it is those that play by the rules that pay for those that stick 2 fingers up to the law!!!!

hang them all!!! ;)
