Do you work in music production? If so you will no doubt appreciate the effort Gabriel puts into the sound of his recordings. There is little that sounds as good technically on a proper hi-fi system than a Peter Gabriel recording.

Why do you find it amusing? The two eras are completely different. Gabriel's Genesis was epic in its vision whereas Collins' version just went after the big bucks afforded by chintzy rock pop.

I suppose it's just music on two different intellectual levels really.

Since the part about Collins being a member of the band during both eras obviously went clean over your head, I'd best move on to another thread :D

Since the fact that they were like two different bands (and I was there so I do know) due mainly to the fact that Gabriel wrote nearly all the material prior to his departure went completely over yours yes please do run along and find something you actually know something about to comment on. Good luck with that :Whatever_

Got to go along with that. Gabriel was a very unique, if that's the word to use, Genesis. Collins was very commercial.
My favourite instrument in bands has always been the drums, and Collins is one of the best, but for originality you can't beat Gabriel.
You only have to look at the pop charts. Genesis never rated highly in the singles when Gabriel was the lead, but when Collins took over it all changed.
I prefered the old format :thumb:

Can't blame him for carrying on if they are prepared tp pay him for doing it though.

Great drummer, and only sorry I never got to see him play.

Yeah, he was a part of the band, but when he took over from Gabriel, he was trying to be too much like him. As I said earlier, I love 'Trick' and 'Wind', but they were just too 'samey' after that.

IMHO :)

Shame to knock Collins, he did somne great stuff with Genesis.

not sure where the phil hate comes from, at least he doesn't need autotune to be as good live,,,, lol

all joking aside, i'm sure his music is not to everyones taste, but i don't think anyone can claim hes crap. His extreamly good with drums and he does good vocals.

Yes he did, it was called drumming! And then Peter Gabriel left.

i'm a bit younger then the rest of you so i can't look at genesis with the rose tinted spectacles, they weren't as great a band as most older people had made out to me. i've tried listening to some of there songs and they just weren't that great. i also find the only decent song gabriel done was the only one anyone under 40 knows him for which was sledgehammer.

but then when we get to Phil Collins, i guess alot of the hate comes from him being a bit of dick, but you can't doubt his music, the best of collection is always in my car ready to listen to when i need a good sing a long and a bit of fun in the car.

windyboy 10 March 2011 02:02 PM

Perhaps he just decided to sit back and let a chocolate bar eating gorilla do the drumming in the future

No disrespect intended here, but what has age got to do with enjoying a piece of music.
My ringtone is a song that was around before I was even a twinkle in my Dads eye :D

I am amazed that anyone would admit to listening to Phil Collins.
Perhaps they are being humorously ironic.

no disrepect taken, what i was trying to say (not very well i may add), there seems to be different types of music that seem to be more acceptable in differnet age groups. funnily enough where i work most of the people are around my age and when we saw that Collins was retiring all of us were talking about how much we enjoyed his music and that we didn't find genesis to be much cop at all. :)

You work with people who are hard of hearing? That's very honourable :thumb:

#...Woooah oooah ooh # ;)

Love all Genesis albums upto and inc. Abacab (and obviously Three Sides Live).

Not so keen on the commercial, more 'poppy' albums i.e. from Genesis, Invisible Touch, etc...

Well, you can have a chuckle at this. My fav music at the mo' is Ministry of Sound and Faithless and I am in my forties :lol1::lol1: Oh and I am very, very partial to Muse.
I love music, no matter what era. Phil Collins was a fantastic drummer, but he could never compete with Gabriel on the unique sound. Most of his songs, like I said, were very commercial. I like things a bit different.
To each their own. :)
Listen to the backgroung music. That is my ringtone. You can blame Pulp Fiction for that. I love the song, but Christ, it is one old song :lol1:

I take it we can embed vids now then :).........btw saw Lamb lies down tour about `75 I think. Took about 3 days for my mouth to close after all that awe. Seen Genesis about 3 times Gabrieless at Knebworth after that, different sound, enjoyable in a slightly different way. I still think Phils an underrated drummer though, try and get a listen of Brand X, Moroccan roll ;)

He's one of only 3 people to sell 100m albums as a member of a band and as a solo artist. Not a bad thing to have done.

5t.
