Very interesting project

The main thing that puts me off buying a newage is because they have 4 doors

Maybe a silly question but is there a reason Subaru decided not to make a newage type R ?

Probably a cut in the budget which didn't allow for 2 different models. Also that they were aiming at more of the car market in general rather than the rally fans. I suspect this is more of the case as they went all soft and lardy with the newage so they could sell a great number of cars.

Right, seeing as though I'm not 100% sure what car I am doing this too, I thought I'd concentrate on getting the 2 doors something like first, as I feel that is where most of the headaches are based..

Having thought about which way to do this, and having had a look at a few limosine doors, I figured that I would first make the frame, and then sort the outer skin out afterwards.

The thought being that I can get the structural frame done inside and out, with minimal joints.

First job, get 2 complete doors, and remove the outer skins off both.

Then inside we have 2 door bars, which I first drilled out the spot welds holding them, and then re-fixed using a single 8mm bolt at either end.
As the bars are not horizontal, this will allow them to pivot slightly as I will be using them as a guide for the lengthening of the doors.

OEM doors have a natural join line near the leading edge of the frame, so I decided that was a good point to split the doors.

Next was to use the 4 internal bars, and cut and re-weld them so that they were 13cms longer, with just one join.

I also put a slug inside to ensure additional support..

Next step, a bit of headscratching before I start cutting in order to try and minimise the number of welds.

So, that done, cutting and lining up....


This is the inner top part of the frame.

Basically I have used 2 frames, and cut them longer in order to acheive one join.
I hope the pics explain a bit better.

In the next 2 shots, where the 2 sets of grips are located you will see 2 oval holes.

These are in fact the same hole but different frames, and it is these that I use to measure and make sure the distance is equal..

On the above shots you can see were the doors frames have been separated.

Next a bit of inner door frame needed fabricating where the window mechanism bolts up, again another bit of another door..

did see an episode of 'custom my ride' (west coast customs in the US) where they turned a range rover into a 3 door, they cut together the front and rears to make one larger door and moved the pillars to suit, doubt you'd get much help from watching it though!! :)

they did mean to buy a sport initally i think........

I seen that myself.

They did cut 2 doors up and weld them together, but I felt it was a bit of a bodge job TBH ( as is plenty of their stuff). There would be areas inside the doors that simply can't have been done properly that way, IMHO...

Most of those shows are a bodge as they're on a limited time scale

They were meant to start with an HSE the model up from a sport but the guy buying the car bought the Sport by mistake lol

On topic I envy your abilities to be able to manafacturer things like longer doors. Us meer mortals just have to go out and buy type-r's :)

I have no new pics, but one door frame is complete, and I'll get the other frame done next week.

Next job will be the door skins, and then the glass.

The glass will be made from scratch from a template.


I'm still unsure which car to do this too yet, as I have a few little ideas/upgrades for the white one over winter. ;)

Milllion % agree with Beef and scoobdood. Absolutely gorgeous looking car!

When you see pictures like that, they should have made a newage 2 door!
Thankfully its going to happen, best of luck with the build :thumb:

Is it going to be a widebody or is it going to be standard (if that word can be used for this project :lol1:)
