I sadly had to change my driving licence to a photo 1 when I bought the new car. I was all bent on keeping my paper and hadn't changed over the address when I'd moved.

Makes my blood boil that it now has to be renewed. Thankfully I didn't loose any entitlements.

No, I have lots of the latest technology all of which I bought despite (gasp) not having a photo licence of any sort.

I don't think I'm some sort of rebel, I just haven't bothered, but have had none of the problems that you claim could arise as a result. Therefore, it's pish :D

Totally agree as they now want £25 off me and a few hours of my time in sorting this new licence out and suggest I drive somewhere 'approved' to do it. Big Bro PITA and wish I'd resisted the change from old style to lucrative new high maintenance style. Less cost, less hassle:o

Just got mine through the door today(expires 10-09-11)...Wasn't gonna spend any money today,But walking to the letter box has just cost me about £25 !!,
£20 for the renewal, about £5 for some new passport photo's and not forgetting a stamp ...
As mentioned here before dont send it straight away ,but as close to the expiry date as possible as they renew it from the date received at the DVLA ..
Looks like beans on toast tonight then..lol

When they complained they get the DVLA saying 've hav no record of you passing zis test. prove it!'. Obviously people haven't got copies, usually, of tests passed many years ago.

Though apparently the DVLA were going to send the old license back as well with a hole through the photo to end this problem. I don't trust the b*ggers so I scan mine in before it gets sent. And it gets sent at least recorded delivery.

Dave

Good advice :thumb: That's what I did last year when I sent mine off. They're a law into themselves.

Still got my old paper license, no fecking way am I having a photocard license. Renewing it every 10 years, at my expense, you can get fcuked Mr DVLA. The Government know what I look like from the £80 fcuking quid passport I renewed this year, they can get off their lazy arses & look that up if they want to see my ugly mug.

If it were free to renew I wouldn't have a problem, it isn't & therefore is daylight robbery, period.

£1000 fine for not having your current address on your licence...

scoobynutta555 23 July 2011 12:27 PM

I've still got my old paper licence. I've been thinking of changing it fir a while now as it's a bit battered. Same as above it's still registered to my parents house. Instead of risking losing the licence when sending it off, can't I just claim I've lost it? If the new licence comes back with less entitlements I can claim to have found the old one with the original entitlements. I've come quite attached with my jigsaw paper licence :)

Mrfastbaz 23 July 2011 12:45 PM

still got my pink paper one expires in 2028 when i m 70

scoobyvirgin 23 July 2011 06:51 PM

Still got my paper licence too, no intention of changing it, nor any intention of changing the address on it from my parents.

Quick, go and fine all the people currently locked up, bet they've not changed the address on their licences ;)

I suppose most of them dont run the risk of being stopped when driving and asked to produce though.

Does anyone know if any endorsements over 4 years old will get removed too at the same time, for free?

Or would you have to pay the fee, as an additional payment? (It used to be 8 quid for removal - don't know what it is now?)...

pslewis 23 July 2011 08:07 PM

My paper licence is tatty, green and original .... I did read somewhere that they are about to make the Photocard compulsary for all - and those with paper licences will be fined if they do not convert.

oldsplice 23 July 2011 08:20 PM

You still have a paper one, as well as the bloody awful (in my case, anyway! :lol1:) photocard. :)

I've changed addresses recently and needed to update 4 driving licences for the family and 3 vehicle registration documents - not helped by having lost a V5 car document and one of the "Counterpart" sections for a driving licence.

Did most of it on-line but a bloody nightmare. Took for ever and did my head in. The variety of 16 digit numbers on the licence and counterpart is staggering. The piece De resistance is the number on the back of the early photo-card licences where you need the Hubble telescope to actually read the damn thing.

Yes I felt just the same way, but there was no option but to change in the end.

I have still got my original little red book licence though, with endorsements! ;)

After changing my name my replacment driving card only has half my face on.... cuts off from the top lip - shocking that they can issue one like this considering your not allowed to smile etc...

Granted I don't have a freaky chin but you never no.

Scrappy9 25 July 2011 11:30 AM

I did mine on line, providing your passport photo is recent (not more than 5 years old I think) they put that photo on it for you, it was really simple.

Think it was £20 all in.

JusticeEmpire 19 April 2012 01:10 PM

Well I got an unwelcomed 'application' from the DVLA this morning.

I don't have a problem in updating my photo. After all, I could have received an injury or something that would have drastically changed my appearance. But I do have a problem in having to pay them £20 for the privilidge of doing so, when there is no guarantee that it will be accepted. After all, I have 6 (current) speeding points, many points & warnings previously for speeding, and I always get parking tickets etc, so in theory they could 'deny' my application because. It is an application after all, rather than a submission/notification.

Then, I will have to do my passport next month. It seems like a huge waste of time and money, when all of these things could easily be centralised. After all, the new passports have all the chips etc inside them, so why not tag my driving license onto there?

It does annoy me because it is simply a revenue generation system ONLY for people who abide by the law. There is no need to charge for it. And does the money go to something good, like preventing uninsured drivers and bringing everyones premium down? I thought of a 'system' years back that would sort it all out instantly, but I am not going to give them my ideas, they can buy the idea off of me or figure it out for themselves.

Finally, out of interest, it says that I must not have anything covering head, unless for medical or religious reasons. 95% of the time, I wear a cap. Just to be a pain in the arse, I am very tempted to have my cap on and claim it is for religious reasons, and see what they say about that. Remember a few years back how 'Jedi' almost became a fully recognised religion?

Anyways, rant over for now, while I have my coffee and consider what I am going to do with this. I might revert back to my 'travelling via my possession' rather than driving a car, is much easier and cheaper :)

JusticeEmpire 19 April 2012 01:14 PM

OK, sorry, rant not over.

Why on earth can I not use my fingerprint instead of a photo? We all have unique fingerprints, and they don't change every 10 years. Most police patrol vehicles carry fingerprint scanners, so to me, a fingerprint instead of photo would make more sense.

speedking 19 April 2012 01:46 PM

Hmmm. When you show your licence at a Spanish car hire desk, you think they will have a fingerprint reader and access to the UK's fingerprint database
