Im assuming the method of carrying will be a shoulder bag of some sort?
Reasonably priced, and glaringly obvious to the street mugger etc.

OK, enough negativity from me lol.
Suprised at the number of iPeople who have said they will pass on this one. A good few are saying must have (of course iSheep) but strange the number of people for the first time are saying, hmmm not sure I have a need for this.

Leslie 28 January 2010 10:43 AM

Looks interesting enough to those who like gadgets and I would expect it to work very well at what it is designed for.

Like my mobile phone which is usually switched off, it would just be an encumbrance to me. I find I can scrape through life without needing a phone or a computer about my person at every step.

Les ;)

Michael,

As I posted on the other thread in computer related:

So its basically a big iphone with a high res screen that doesn't make calls or take pictures

- but then why should it make calls or take pictures?.

I'd be interested, but just as a toy really, although I do a bit of photography work for websites and other media applications on a part time basis, and it woud be great for showing prospective clients work that I've done, as I don't have a laptop at home.

I also travel a lot, and it would be great for browsing/videos/emails on the go - although the iPhone does all that very well, albeit with a much smaller screen. It looks to be big enough to be more useable than the iPhone, but small enough to be very portable.

The price woud have to be right, though, for the hardware and the data plans. What I am thinking though, is that an ipad may be a more sensible proposition than upgrading the iphone to a 3gs or 4 (whenever that arrives)

But I agree - its something I could easily live without, although I can see its uses as a luxury item.

Snazy 28 January 2010 11:32 AM

Well worded mate.

Didnt think to look in computer related. lol

dpb 28 January 2010 11:41 AM

Theyll need a specially designed ibag to shoulder it in presumably ;)

Well I did say about my person rather than at home of course.

But beware Trout, for all you know I could indeed be telepathic with unheard of powers? Be careful who you sit next to at the pictures!

Snaz,

I am no Apple fanboy but I don't get your anti Apple stance, I have an Ipod Touch and a Blackberry Curve and both are excellent devices, but in different ways, the Touch is really slick and pulls some cool tricks, lovely screen and very versatile, the Blackberry does the same things but in a slightly less intuitive way but it is a much better business tool.

I have an Archos 5 Internet Tablet and that is pretty good, best for watching movies on, browsing and touch screen not as good as the Touch but then that has set the bar for touch screens.

I have an old N95 and thats a good little phone, nice camera, horrible to browse the internet on though, its better than the LG Renoir that was meant to replace it though, using a Touch made that look antique.

They are just tools, no one of them does everything, always a compromise to be made somewhere.

The Ipad looks interesting, I love my Ipod Touch and a bigger version of it could potentially replace my laptop for Porn and Scoobynet duties :D

darts_aint_sport 28 January 2010 01:15 PM

It's a pointless device.

It's too physically big to be used like an iPhone.
It's too heavy to be carried around like an iPhone.
The screen is not suited to reading unlike the Amazon Kindle.
Has a powerful processor but can't multi-task (so what's the point of the powerful processor)
No front-facing camera so no videoconferencing.
It doesn't even come with a stand, so how you are supposed to hold it with one hand (1.5lbs remember) and use it with the other, there goes the multi-touch unless you have it flat on a table which is difficult to see unless you are sitting over it.
You can plug in a keyboard to make it more like a laptop - so why not just use a laptop and have none of the above limitations!

Game changing, this is not.

Hanley 28 January 2010 02:39 PM

It looks way better for reading on than the Kindle

darts_aint_sport 28 January 2010 02:43 PM

The Kindle uses electronic Ink, which is actual ink, and thus is much better to read from than a backlit screen for any prolonged period of time.

Hanley 28 January 2010 02:48 PM

The Kindle is good for one thing...storing and displaying monochrome text and simple graphics, okay the Kindle 2 has a web browser but it's usability is questionable.

A report online suggests more people are already reading e-books via the iPhone on Stanza than on the Kindle.

Yes the Kindle may be a good e-reader but I suspect people may opt for an e-reader which is just as good, excellent for surfing, pictures, music, games etc etc at not too much more cost.

It will be interesting to see where it all stands in 12 months time.

I must add I've been tempted for the last 12 months to buy a Kindle as I really want to switch to ebooks, I'll wait and test out the iPad and see how it looks and feels.

:)

Thats because I dont have one. But like KM, founder of Crackberry I do like getting under the skin of Apple fanbois, purely based on their defensive reaction.

Just for the record, this is my stance in general

Home - PC does everything I need it to do, runs stable, and has not short fallings for the purposes I use a PC. Mac on the other hand while it would do everything I need too, is over price for MY requirements. They are of course the favorite of media people, and I can clearly see why that it.

Mobile - I dont like touch screens, so the iPhone plays no part in me choosing which device next, the nearest I would own would be an iPod Touch, but right now I have no use for one, other than to spend money.

Portable - Same as PC really, MacBooks are too expensive to justify for my needs, as pretty as they are, I can get a laptop at half the price and be happy with it.

I have an iPod, great little device, and the fact is has Nike+ on it was THE deciding factor when I bought it (honestly) its never let me down, great design, and still running strong years later.

As a whole I think what Apple do is great, innovative, progressive, and definatly bold. It has a huge following (some of which is just a little too fanatical to be healthy lol) and has earned the respect it commands.

However, apart from the iPod, (which I would be unlikely to replace with another iPod now) they have no products of interest to me.

So I am left with my stance, great stuff, not for me.

This thread about the iPad, as much as I have poked fun is 100% genuine. As I have said a lot of Apple people I know are not impressed by it, and only a small group of them are intent on getting one. And some of those admit they dont know why, but its Apple so they must buy.

Gawd I have gone on a bit there. lol
Hope that explains it. Its all a bit of fun to me :)

Snazy 28 January 2010 03:11 PM

As for iPad v Kindle.
Is the Kindle still rather expensive? In which case I can see the interest in going for a multi purpose (although not multi tasking) device. Even then 4-500 quid is a lot, and they are expecting books to be not exactly cheap.

Reading a newspaper on them also looks like a step in the right direction, but in general, I have to agree with the complex conclusion of darts aint sport.

There are crossover devices, but this just seems to overlap a little too much to be defined as one.

STi wanna Subaru 28 January 2010 03:15 PM

I find for a lot of the apple stuff people feel the need to justify why they bought it or why they think they need it. Something a bit odd about that to me.

dpb 28 January 2010 03:54 PM

I think of an application you dont have to download and its free , if your caught short :D

lol a friend of mine actually started a Facebook group yesterday of something like "I am buying an iPad, and dont feel the need to justify it" :lol1:

The bit that freaks me out the most is the need to buy anything Apple release. Another friend bought a MacBook Pro, and replaced it a few months later because they had launched a new one :cuckoo:

Great if you can afford it, but god help anyone who becomes caught up in that circle, and has limited income.

Got to applaude Apple for managing to create such hysteria or great products that people feel the need to "must have"

Maybe because all the non apple folk are constantly asking "why did you
buy that when [insert alternative] is cheaper and does the same thing"? but yet forgetting that technical spec is probably quite far down on the list for most purchasers of any such product, whereas everything from the looks and feel of thing to what its like to use and yes, image, are much higher up on most users priority list.

Apple products are unquestionably much better in the whole touch/feel/looks department.

Michael,

I'm not sure how much of the hysteria actually exists and how much of it is pure media hype.

I doubt in reality, in the UK at least, its any different in the "must have" department than, for example computer gaming consoles, or anything else that you have to pre order to ensure you get one. Certain toys at christmas spring to mind.

Snazy 28 January 2010 05:13 PM

You are probably right that a lot of it is clever marketing, getting people excited.
When the iPhone came out I was in the US, my god it was mayhem, loads of armed security guards controlling the queue for the shop, but then that IS the USA lol.

There does seem to be a small percentage of Applettes who just get WAY too carried away about it all though, then I guess the rest are tarred with the same brush.

ScoobyDoo555 28 January 2010 06:53 PM

I've been having a real battle with myself over this (I lost btw).....

As some of you know, I'm a BIG Mac user for Music Production and media.

FWIW, I thought you might like my take on it (not that it's any more or less valid than anybody else's for that matter :D)

I can't see myself getting one. (I said this about iPhone, and I've got one now, but we'll skirt around that faux pas! :D)

The device is too limiting.... and this seems to be the general comment about it.

However, take a step back and look at who Apple are aiming this at, in relation to what it will do very well - media playback

Imho, there's a lot of General Public who will lap this device up because it's intuitive interface will allow access to and playback of media easily and subjectively, in a stylish manner.

No, it's NOT a PC-tablet (which let's be honest, is what Mac fans wanted - OSX on a tablet form) and won't do anything that a computer will do. However, for the functionality and ease-of-use FOR JOE PUBLIC, it's a winner. For people who a computer (mac or pc) doesn't really matter.

Again, it's taking the winning formula from the Ipod Touch and iPhone in terms of user interface (NOT tech-spec) and putting on a bigger platform.

Personally, I was hoping for an OSx-based tablet that I could run software for say, setting up stadium PA systems from anywhere in the ground (an app that's available on the PC tablet) - not going to happen anytime soon.

So, I am disappointed that Apple haven't delivered the device I had hoped they would, but they have delivered a device that whilst the gap in the market doesn't appear to be there, they will FORCE the topic.

By giving you the device you (Joe Public, not S'netters) didn't know you wanted - always risky, but pioneering nevertheless.

Will it work? Who knows, but it's going to make for interesting watching all the same.

DAn :)

Top Tip (from B3TA):

"DON'T WASTE money on an expensive iPad. Simply hold an iPod Touch closer to your face"

From what I'm seeing there's just you, Mr Crackberry droning on and on and on.... in fact you even started this thread BEFORE the release of the iPAD so that you could drone on and on and on......

I for one (and your imaginary 3 fellow travellers) are sure looking forward to your skiing trip, unless that is you can actually get a signal up there ;)

See thats what I was expecting it to be too. If its tablet sized, it should surely operate like one too.
As you say, most people seem to have been expecting full functionality. Certainly the people I know anyway.

Either way Apple have just boosted their revenue by a few billion no doubt, and there will be some happy people over the next few months.
Roll on next years version with a proper OS on it lol

lol @ boxst. Im expecting to see dodgy iPhone magnifiers on Ebay soon from Hong Kong. The cheap iPhone upgrade to an iPad lol

Evening Hunt ;)

F*ck it, I am going to get one, the Touch was great, face it, whatever they did it would sell in droves and get slagged off by geeks. they aren't perfect and for me, as a proper geek, it's a guilty pleasure but they are so choice, if you have the funds, I suggest you try one :D

Will be a while before I get one n reality, I only bought the Archos 2 weeks ago, I tink Apple stuff is great in that you use it in an Apple vein, you do things differently, the interface is so nice you dont seem to mind the shortcomings even as a geek, thats why the punters love them as by and large they dont see the rough edges we see, just the lovely user experience, cas ein point is 5 years ago I bought an Iriver H340, way better than the Ipod of the time, Radio, coulour screen, microphone, no Itunes but it was chunkier and way less sexy but it is still going wheras most Ipods of the era have had it, it lokks comical now but still does its job.

Snazy 28 January 2010 08:36 PM

lol jesus, you really ARE a geek :p

Fair play to ya mate. I suppose leave it a while and see what is going on with it, and see if the v2 is due to be released lol.

lol @ the H340 or whatever it is. I only discovered music when I got my iPod :p
And now I just use my.... oh well you know, the other thing.
