Clive?

Well spotted Tim, that does need some clarification as it's not that clear in the pics. If it's just a captive nut that goes on the end of it then draining will be a problem if it's mounted to the suspension turret.:wonder:

Let us know if/what drains can be done. Doesnt matter if not il just take a normal one and as i say, i arnt draining anywhere yet but if i do i can have it converted :) If you can get a -10 or something drain on them then im sure i could get a bung until i do decide to drain to sump or something.

Sorry mate missed that somehow, just a 5mm drain hole.

As for draining, I currently removed mine each time, empty and rinse. Takes all of 10 mins ;)

Should be all made within a couple of weeks.

Those that wanted -10 return for sump, extra £10. Can you confirm yes or no please

Clive

TimH 17 January 2010 04:42 PM

Excuse my ignorance...what's a -10 fitting? If I had one would it make it easier to rig up a pipe to a remote tap, making draining easier? Or is it one of those fancy (and expensive) braided hose connector thingies?

Mad Hammer 17 January 2010 06:36 PM

Here's one. Would allow you to add a pipe to return to sump if you wanted to go that way

clive il have mine with a -10 drain and buy a stopper for it. forgot to mention id like pipes too!

so thats £85 all in for can, -10 return & pipes?

Mad Hammer 17 January 2010 08:19 PM

Yep that's it mate.

Anybody else want the extra fitting as I will be speaking to the fabricators tomorrow

Sorry to still be a dunce here - what is in the 5mm drain hole? Is it just a removable screw/plug? If so, I think I'll go for the -10 fitting and arrange some kind of remote drain :)

Another no-doubt dumb question...having seen what's trapped in a catch can - a watery oily goo - why would you want to return it to the sump?

i believe the catch can catches vented vapour from the crank and heads. the vapour contains oil. the can collects the oily vapour and whats left in the can is returned to where it came - your sump. theres no water in it, if there is you have a problem!

high power builds and cars used hard on track/drag events can spill oil out of the vents from the engine. i remember P20SPD posted up saying he once launced and found near on a litre of oil in his can everytime he did, if he didnt catch and return it - thats a 1l of oil lost every launch and as you would imagine, thats no good for your engine.

notfub 18 January 2010 12:59 PM

A few questions :thumb:;

1. I've seen some catch cans with "wire wool" inside to help the oil condense, will these cans have anything inside them?

2. Based on the can's suggested mounting position (pass suspension turret), will there be enough space underneath the can to run a drain (either -10 or a pipe off the 5mm outlet)?

3. On a typical modified road car (circa 330bhp), how quickly will these fill up as there's no viewing window too see the fill level?

4. Any chance of a quick fitting guide or a basic pointer on where to plumb in the three inlet pipes?

alex_00s 18 January 2010 03:01 PM

Going on what notfub has said and poinmts raised, would it be a good idea to have the drain off hole anyway?

Just for convenience so that the catch tank can be left there without the need to keep removing to empty and to ensure the engine oil level stays constant?

With the drain hole, where exactly does the pipe go from the catch tank? A fitting guide (with and without drain hole) would be great :)

Mad Hammer 18 January 2010 03:40 PM

The drain hole is at the base of the can and is accessible when mounted. Like I said before it only takes 10 mins to remove which is the method I employ on my race car as that one has no drain hole.

No wire wool in these, no point imo

If you go for the -10 fitting for a seperate drain to sump there is way more work involved as you will then need to get the sump modified also with a -10 fitting and then have seperate pipework.

On a road car it will depend on driving style to how quick they fill up and condition of engine etc etc. I use a screwdriver as a dipstick to test levels in mine :)

I will do a fitting guide with pics as I will be fitting one to my Type R very soon.

alex_00s 18 January 2010 03:53 PM

Ok, thats a good answer... I'm not too keen on modifying the sump... I think I'll stick to the 'screwdriver-dipstick' method, lol

notfub 18 January 2010 06:09 PM

Thanks for the answers Clive :thumb:

I don't want to drain into the sump but just wanted to know if there was space under the suggested mounting position to get a line in if needed. As there is room then I'm happy with the standard spec 5mm drain plug ;)

The screwdriver method works for me, why didn't I think of that :wonder: :lol1:

Are we good to go on these now Clive? Do you need deposits or payment up front etc?

When do you think these will be fabricated and ready for sale? Couple of weeks?

Thanks,
Dean.

Mad Hammer 18 January 2010 06:20 PM

Yep, couple of weeks mate. In fact I have just got off the phone and all materials are being ordered tomorrow :)

I will PM payment details to you all once I know they are ready for delivery :)
